Fujifilm X-T10 and Canon Speedlite 430EX

I have just replaced my Canon SLR with a Fujifilm X-T10 and still have my Canon Speedlite 430EX flashgun.

 

I have seen various posts regarding using these two together in online forums but would like to get a definitive answer to the following:

 

1. Can this flashgun be used safely on the X-T10? I have read about differing voltage requirements between Canon and Fuji?

 

2. The flashgun has 5 pins on the base whereas the X-T10 only has 3 pins and a larger spherical contact on the hot shoe, what is the significance of this?

 

3. Will the flashgun operate in TTL mode on the X-T10?

 

4. If not is the flashgun compatible in manual mode? How do I go about using the two together in this mode?

 

5. Should I buy a flashgun dedicated to the X-T10? If so any recommendations?

I don't have a 430EX but I have used a 580exII and a 600EXRT on my Fuji XT1 back when I first started using Fuji. The Canon flashes can be used safely on Fuji cameras. They will not have TTL, it is manual flash only. I'm not familiar with how the 430EX works but you should be able to push the mode button to change it to manual mode. If you leave it in TTL mode I'm pretty sure it will just fire at full power. 

 

As for buying a dedicated flash, it completely depends on how much you use it and whether or not you're comfortable using manual flash. I only use manual flash for my Fuji cameras but I have over a decade of experience with manual flash. I can usually walk into a room and guess my exposure settings and flash levels before I get my cameras out.
