Yes, it’s far better to use a card reader. I have. USB3 reader with SD & Micro SD slots which is double-ended – USB A at one end, USB-C at the other. I use the latter for my MacBook.
But I also use both Photos (family stuff) and Capture One for importing the photos.

If you do get a usb card reader, you can drag and drop the files using the finder. Glad to hear things are okay though.

I had the same problem initially. I solved it by using a piece of cotton thread looped through the attachment cord. I fed it through the eyelet then pulled the cord through.
