Washtenaw

I'm just about to buy an XC 50-230mm lens. Not sure if a lens hood will be included, but the official/genuine ones are quite big I can buy on eBay an apparently compatible 'flower' lens hood which is much smaller, but will this work and/or be sufficient ? The listing says it's compatible but don't know if I should trust it. Has anyone happened to use a flower lens hood or anything smaller than the official one ?
