Built on a very high rocky peak, Castelpietra (whose name means "castle of stones") dominated the surrounding valleys. Now, only ruins of this daring construction remain. -

From Courmayeur start two valleys which are one the continuation of the other.
To the south-west the Val Veny (wilder, famous for the Brenva and Miage glaciers); to the north-east the Val Ferret (more touristy and flat but no less beautiful).
Both border the Mont Blanc chain on the Italian side.
