New member with a noise problem.

Hi, I am new here today. I have just got an X-T20 with the kit lens and I am getting a rather strange problem with noise. I took three photos of an identical subject at three different settings. The first fully automatic with the landscape setting, the second with the P programme and the third fully manual with an ISO setting of 200. All three images were correctly exposed but the one on the manual setting showed a considerable amount of noise even with the 200 ISO setting. The other two showed much less noise, not really what I expected. Can anyone help?

Hi, Thanks for your reply. Here are three 100% crops

 0310 was done on fully automatic with the landscape setting aperture f3.6 shutter 1/100, ISO 200.

0311 was on the P setting, Aperture f3.6, shutter 1/125, ISO 200.

0312 was manual, Aperture f3.6, shutter 1/125 and ISO 200.

I don't know if you need to see the uncropped images, if so I will post them.

Two of the photo's have essentially identical levels of noise , the minor differences are most likely to be due to slight changes in ambient light and also crop levels.

I suspect that the first photo without noise which is using one of Fuji's own auto modes is applying more Noise Reduction (baked in via auto mode) and that's why there is less noise, also correspondingly less detail in my opinion.

Try this test shoot full manual again at the same settings Aperture f3.6, shutter 1/125 and ISO 200  but this time go into menu and set NR to +2/3 and see if the picture then matches the auto shot.

Thanks to both. Olaf, the film simulation was as standard i.e. Provia but I think you have hit the nail on the head, I checked and the grain effect was set to strong! Goodness knows how that happened. Anyhow, problem sorted.

Blue Jays are tricky to get good photos like you have, they tend to fly away as soon as the lens cap comes off 😀.

      Forgot to mention another thing. Mine does not work if I plug the USB cord into a USB hub. It only works if I plug the cord into one of the USB ports on my computer itself (an iMac). This surprises me because I think there's a hub built into the computer itself, which is how the computer has multiple USB ports in the first place. I think it was somebody here that suggested I try that -- sorry I don't remember who!

      On another forum someone suggested spraying some electrical contact cleaner into the wheel but the Fuji tech said that could risk frying the rest of the cameras electrical so I haven't tried that.

      I have an x100VI with 1.01 firmware - did a reset already and didnt solve issue I am about to describe. Can you all see if your camera does this: Switch to C mode, step down to f16 and then press shutter half way. Does your screen go dark? I have tried playing will all settings (have had the following so quite familiar with the menus: x100, x100f, XT-2, X-Pro 2, XT-3) , only happens in C mode. If you find this can you report to Fuji @ digitalinfo@fujifilm.com. They told me they had not seen this before and that it was normal behavior because the shutter is closing, but the shutter closes in S mode as well.
