Flicker reduction

Recommended Posts

Hi,  does anyone have flicker reduction working in Video mode ?  I can set it to on or off in stills mode but it is greyed out in video Mode.  If I set it in stills mode to on or off when I switch to video mode it is always off.

Anyone ?

As I understand flicker reduction, it is about the "timing of when the shutter fires" to avoid the "pulse" of some light sources.  In other words, the camera senses and "waits" a fraction of a second to fire so that the exposure "happens" during maximum intensity of the pulse cycle of the light source.

Now, if this is the case (and I'm pretty sure it is), then I don't see a way it could be implemented in video and still have anything like smooth motion capture.

Hi Rand.. how would the camera know when the maximum intensity of the pulse cycle occurs ?  I shoot with a Canon video camera as well and it has a flicker reduction setting which in the same situation/location/lighting  works and I get no flicker.

Due to the nature of how flicker reduction works, no, you cannot use it in video mode.

This admittedly isn't well explained in the manual under 'shooting menus - flicker reduction'. All it states is that "Enabling flicker reduction disables the electronic shutter and increases the time needed to record pictures."
