FW 4.0 Continuous focus test with horribly backlit subject

Hi guys, same here.

Made a couple of AF tracking tests for what it matters for me the most:

- wide open
- dark subject
- backlighting

e.g. bride entering the church

In this case I have me entering the kitchen ... what I found is that (as also suggested here) disabling the electronic shutter makes a HUGE difference. As shown below it is not enough to have MS+ES (failed tracking pic), you should really be on MS (good tracking pic in the comments). Frankly speaking this is misleading, I would mark it as a bug.

Setup:

- XT1 FW 4
- 35/1.4 at 1.4
- iso 1250
- 1/125

- CL

Overall AF improved quite a bit in this sector, well done.

What's your experience in tricky situations?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it does work, but only using cdaf instead of the faster pdaf.

ES or MS+ES = No AF-Tracking

MS Only = AF Tracking is possible

Face Detection ON = Tracking is possible, but only with CDAF

Face Detection OFF = Tracking is possible, with PDAF and CDAF

CH = Tacking is possible only using the part of the sensor covered by phase detection pixels. Zone AF only with 3x3 or 5x3 box (no 5x5).

CL = All new AF-Tracking options are enabled.

I did a test this morning of the new firmware, using the 16-55 f/2.8 lens. The lighting was very poor and subject was backlit, a situation which used to cause this camera a lot of problems. The camera was in CL mode, auto ISO (varied between 400 and 800), f/2.8, 1/125 shutter and I used the central af point (smallest size) aimed at the school badge.

You can draw your own conclusions, but I was impressed with the improvement.
