Climbing rope camera straps security

Recommended Posts

I noticed a lot of the custom climbing rope straps that use leather patches for termination have two points of failure:

  1. The single seam attaching the leather patch to the climbing rope
  2. The fold of the leather patch holding the keyring on the camera

Like in this type of climbing rope strap:

Both are poor choices for holding a camera safely, as the will inevitably wear down and break.

I've noticed there is an Etsy seller who actually uses the rope to hold the camera but to hold it together, he seems to use a complex knot:

Has anyone used these and saw them up close? How do they hold up to wear and tear? Do the melted ends of the cord holding the rope fray and fall off, letting the rope open up?

Thanks!

3rd disadvantage is that I found them uncomfortable after 30 minutes around my neck, so I got rid of mine.

As Milandro says, the kind of stress you get on a strap from a Fuji mirrorless camera doesn't require anything stronger. I've got an Artisan & Artist cord strap on my XPro2. It has those leather patches at the end. I have never heard of any of these straps failing, ever, and nor does my own strap give me any cause for concern. I think it's a non-problem

I use to have them on my X-Pro2 & XT-1, but have found that the weight of the camera, various lenses and on shoe flash was stretching the leather and putting extra strain on the stitching, I have now changed back to think tank straps.

I do however use one on my X100T, without any problems.

The weak links are the leather and stitching.

I’ve never heard of a rope strap snapping. I have my XPRO2 on a silk Artisan and Artist strap - fixed to the camera by impossibly-thin Optech MiniQD anchors, so I can switch between neck and wrist straps. I’ve never heard of them breaking, either, even though the anchoring threads don’t look much thicker than fishing line. They say they take 44lb. No mirrorless camera is ever going to weigh anywhere near that.

I briefly had one of the very costly Artist & Artisan silk rope straps and returned it within a couple days for the same reason.  I have three Fuji cameras and all of them now use the included straps which I find comfortable and work well enough that I'm done looking at exotic straps (as cool looking as so many are).

Hi @CSG. Can you describe the discomfort you felt from the silk rope straps that prompted you to return it? I'm considering a Hyperion camera strap which is made of the same material I supposed (At least what's available here locally). https://www.hyperioncamerastraps.com/

Thank you.

    • Hello. Thankyou, now Is all more clear: I have take some time in your link. Let tell you. I has totaly forget this machine have "compress picture option" and not Only "compress lossless" anyway not change the experiment. RAW  and this last two format look like same result about Number of recording picture. Can tell all results in this: in raw you can make 17 pictures for second. Is wrong. Is about One single Press and wait buffer. Full 30/20/10/8 not change. After 17 Need Press again. You not can Press before "redgreen light recording Is on".   With preshot you can have 25  are more 7 pictures . The story change Only in jpg shot only. In jpg at 30 you have 30 picture but redgreen light off very Fast so you can shot very quicly. At 20 shot Is about start look like infinite shot. 60. So the best performance are this last One  about Speed and recording picture after camera working witout big limit. I want take a shot about Italy cyclet Just for passion. I think i Will use this last setting.  After Need check when battery not are full change and ambient temp.  Anyway my cam look like exactly specific about you link. Im Happy my cam working perfectly.
    • I do not use Flickr, so I do not know what their BB code is. All I did was copy the second link you provided, (starting at https: and ending at  _k.jpg — leave off the [img] and [/img] tags) and pasted it into the message. After a moment, a message popped up asking if I wanted to paste it as the image or as a plain link. I did this twice, the first time I had it paste in as the image and the second time as a link. Nothing fancy or tricky.
    • So do I just copy the BB code from flickr and paste it anywhere on the page like other forums or is there some other trick I need to perform to get it to post?
    • All software is the latest between camera and app. All settings are correct on camera. I have both lossless and uncompressed RAW files on the card in the camera. I have been up and down every reddit thread to no avail and am losing my mind… I’m doing all of the right things. It even sees my camera. It just doesn’t create the “drive” for it (see attached image screenshot).  Please Help!
