ON1 Major update Fuji-centric review

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

ON1 just released a major update to Photo Raw 2017 which includes lots of useful features for Fuji X users. Here is my review with a special emphasis on Fuji including the new lens corrections and improved X-Trans processing and other good stuff for us Fujifilm users.

Let me know if you read it and what you think. I'm talking with them soon to provide feedback and they have a track record of listening so lemme know!

I wanted to follow up after my conversation with Dan Harlacher and Michael Morelli at ON1. In short they really do care about getting things right for Fuji users. This is commendable when you consider what a small market share Fuji has compared with Canon/Sony/Nikon.

They spent a lot of time with me listening to my feedback on this new update. I think as Fuji users, we can count on their support.

I don't have to say this and they don't pay me to say it. I do get affiliate commissions when people click on the links on my website and end up buying something (at no extra cost) but I have always made it clear to all of the companies with whom I have these relationships that I will tell it as I see it. In fact when I mentioned to Dan that I was concerned some readers might get distracted by some red/green bleed on bright white areas in part of a photo that I included in my review for a different purpose, he immediately said "we're not hiding anything... we want people to know that we will work on these types of things" I also mentioned this openness and responsiveness in my review.

Cheers,

Joel

I just updated my review for the final release with changes and additions such as nine new Fuji lenses added to the list of automatic corrections!

ON1 also gave me a coupon code good for 20% off including updates. This comes out a few dollars better for new purchases than their launch special and still includes the Master Series videos. But you have to remove the pre-applied code first and then enter jw17on1 and click apply. Updates come out the same.

Hope you find my updated review useful.

Hi Joel,

I've had a quick play with the revised On1 product (to be honest I'm not really unhappy with my existing non-LR based workflow, so I'm a tough sell)

For the sharpening junkies, I PERSONALLY feel it still lags behind Irident, but not so much that it actually matters (although that's probably true for every X-Trans RAF editing app that isn't LR/ACR)

I'm quite a fan of the pre-RAW On1 Photo, it's a decent bit of finishing software, and it would be nice to have an all-in-one app that does it all (the holy grain no? ;D)

I need to REALLY spend some time with On1 to have any sort of robust opinion, and I sometimes find it hard to separate "is this app any good" Vs "do I actually like using this app" as it can easily go Yes  / No when I try something new

I'll say one thing for it though - it's a whole lot of power and features for comparatively little coin, and that's exceedingly commendable

There's some really good example shots in your review, shots that focus your readers on what to actually look for when appraising how adroit image rendering should be.

Great work.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the kudos! I didn't really mention the value part of it, but you're right it is a lot of software for the money.

I think ON1 has done a good job of providing many of the best features from the Photo 10 and earlier software into a raw processing package. They've also added some cataloging and search features for those who want to spend less time in LR or even switch completely over.

I'm still using Lightroom for some things and Photo Mechanic for fast culling though this version of ON1 is much faster than LR for culling. It seems to cache several images at a time and is instantaneous until it uses up that cache- then with about a maximum of 4-5 sec on a recent MacBook (i7/8GB/SSD) compared to up to 20 sec. per image at full resolution on LR...

Perhaps one of the best aspects is that ON1 is paying attention to Fuji users which is saying something when you look at market share.

Cheers,

Joel

    • Looking more like the next Fuji camera we see will be an X-T50 but it is still a rumor and no specs have been published.
    • Hey guys, The shutter on/off button switch may be loose on mine. After turning camera on and pressing the shutter/holding close to the area, the camera will turn off and say 'sensor cleaning'. This doesn't happen if I'm shooting via touch screen at all. Everything else is functional. Anyone else experience this before? Would love a much cheaper fix since Fuji Canada just quoted me $700 CAD to fix it, and considering everything else is functional except that part I'm not even sure why MPMB Main Board parts is being replaced😕 I got no explanation from them either.
    • As far as I know the firmware is not country specific. Are you sure that the filename has not been changed ( I am told this can happen with mac os). That's the only thing I can think of.
    • My x-t5 does not exhibit the focusing switch behaviour as you report it, so that is very strange and indicative of a fault. It does not matter whether the flash is attached or not. Once you set the camera for your studio flash, say 1/250th at f5.6, the camera, which is showing you what you will get at that exposure without the flash, will show a black screen unless the ambient light is brighter than what you would typically get indoors. That is why, as Jerry says, you have to set preview exp/wb to off. I have set a button for this.
    • I connected to FRAME.IO a while back and it works fine, but the camera wouldn't connect to the internet all of a sudden today and would get stuck on the reset screen, including initializing and even switching USB Connection mode. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?
