Seeking recommendations on post processing apps

Recommended Posts

With the sudden death of my Chromebook, I have options beyond web based image processing apps and I'm looking for recommendations. I replaced the Chromebook with a Macbook Air. Initially thought I'd download Darktable, but Apple's walled garden had other ideas and I decided that I didn't want to fiddle with bypassing the Mac's security settings, so I'm looking for recommendations. To date, I've mostly used Snapseed (which I really like) and lived with the jpg only processing of Fuji files since the app doesn't recognize RAF files. I've also dabbled with Light Room's mobile app running on the Chromebook, but issues related to screen resolution and the LR app intended for phone and not laptop screens made it difficult to use. Given the Chromebook was far beyond receiving software updates, Adobe's web based version of Photoshop and LR wouldn't run. I also use X Pro Studio that I ran on an ancient Windows 7 machine and will load on the Mac.

So I'm looking for recommendations. Strictly amateur use, with a focus on ease of use and low cost.

Thoughts???

Are you looking for free software or paid for?

You could try Apple's photos which comes for free with the Macbook - it handles JPG and RAF files (although not compressed RAF and Apple takes a while to support recent cameras).

You could also try XnViewMP which is a free viewer/editor.

If you are willing to pay for a subscription the Lightroom works well and will support all Fujifilm cameras and all file types.

This is a utility app that will let you view compressed raf files in QuickLook (finder):

As far as low cost editing goes, …

DarkTable, RawTherapee and GIMP are free and very, very good. The PhotoMator suite is low cost and decent. Affinity Photo is excellent, low cost and probably on sale at the moment.

Do not let Apple’s hysterical, pearl clutching — get thee to a fainting couch warnings about using open source software keep you from trying and finding excellent tools for the jobs you want to use them on. Right now to open DarkTable, etc., just hold down the control key while clicking on the app. A menu will pop up presenting the dire end of civilization warning along with a button that says open anyway. Click it and you should be up and running.

If you do want to muck around in the Terminal app, you can:

It is a standard approach.

Affinity Photo is what a lot of people are moving to from Adobe subscription apps (Lightroom & Photoshop). It is available for Mac.  https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/

I've been using the Adobe apps for so long that I'm sticking with them, even though some say they are sub-optimal for
Fuji X-Trans files, I don't want a whole second workflow just for Fuji files.
