Did you invent, hack, modify, repurpose, recycle, up-cycle anything for your camera?

Have you?

I’ve done several such things but I am curious to see yours.

Until now I have modified front grip of camera L plate with cork, up-cycled and old photographic bag, made usable lenses out of projection lenses, re-used and modified an old pistol grip ( which goes nicely between camera and monopod).

I am very curios to learn and get inspired from your work.

The participation to these threads always overwhelms me  :D

So, I suppose this is to hint what I am interested about.

If you look around the house or at any thrift shop you may find and old Super 8 film camera. Chances are that there is a wrist belt somewhere on the camera or in the case.

Well these make outstanding wrist belts and of course, cost nothing! Just unscrew and screw under your camera : “ et voilà!”.

I turned an old Leica neck strap (14312) into a couple of quick-release wrist straps:

Wrist Strap by Jean-Yves, on Flickr

The main benefit is having a strap which can be mounted or removed in seconds, and which doesn't leave anything attached to the camera when removed. Oddly enough, the only cameras I don't use these on are my Leicas (the strap lugs are brass and aren't guaranteed to support the weight on just one lug).

I glued together two cheap lens mount caps to allow two lens to be held in my Billingham Hadley Pro to stop the two lenses rattling about and damaging each other!

That’s very nice Mike!

Maybe you remember that I’ve show here  ( my other thread “ Seen interesting accessories...”)  a similar solution some time ago that was for sale somewhere and they were doing it by means of 3D printing.

Which adhesive did you use? Were these original caps of di you buy some other ones?

I of course am not claiming this to be an original idea! I stole the notion from somebody else! The caps were I believe JJC cheapos from Amazon, £2 each as opposed to £14 for Fuji originals. The glue used was a JML UV cured glue the name of which escapes me for the moment, but it was dearer £10 than the caps.

PS the glue was called "Lazer Bond" it comes with its own UV led lamp! I reckon I saw this idea long before becoming a Fuji fanboy

I wasn’t implying that you had copied this form me or anyone else.

We all have inspirations and common solutions to a common problem ( see the thing above of the wrist strap from the Super 8 camera) , lots of people must of thought of that!

I too have bought some non original caps but I’ve never glued them because I tend to prefer to not stack up lenses.

I like to travel really light, with only the camera and no bag.  I found these Tristar filter pouches on eBay that were really cheap, including filters that I didn't even use.

I keep an extra battery, combination lens cloth/white balance background, and filter.  If the filter looks odd, it is a HOT filter that blocks infrared and allows taking visible light images with my modified IR/Viz camera.

Woodlander, go ahead, I stole the idea from someone else! I only intend to use the idea to transport my lenses from A-B. Using accessory pockets in the Hadley Pro I can easily keep four lenses under control and not have them clanging around!

that’s very good, would you mind showing us the results and perhaps you could do a youtube tutorial?

The weave can be learned through any different tutorial on making Paracord bracelets, just longer. Likely need at least 10ft of cord, don't make too tight of a braid, a camera strap needs to have some flexibility for comfort. There are Paracord bracelet length calculators on the net too :) takes me about 20min to make, a novice maybe 45.

I have a Cheetah Spot Fujifilm X-T1. The rubber covering fell off after about 6 mo of ownership and Fuji (to their credit) sent me new self adhesive coverings last year and that covering lasted for about another 6 mo. I've got a leather half case for it now, but given the low resale value of this camera and the fact that I'm going to use it until it fails anyhow, I got some Cheetah Spot duct tape at Staples last month and have replaced the rubber grip with this. (The self adhesive gray stair tread rubber that I used on the lens three years ago is far too stiff to fit the contours of the body or I'd have used that.)

Also not to slam on Fuji too badly, I don't think they designed the rubber on these cameras to be in your hand 8 hrs a day 5 days a week 52 weeks a year as I use mine. Even though the rubber got loose and fell off, MECHANICALLY the thing still works FLAWLESSLY just as it has since day one. I've owned a LOT of digital cameras since 2001 and these are the most trouble free that I've ever had.
