Hi everyone, newbie here!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, as said i have just signed up to the forum this week. I am totally new to Fujifilm cameras, and have bought an XS-10 with a couple of lenses. I wonder if i could ask a question, i was out shooting yesterday in bright sunlight. I had on my new Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens, and was just doing some nice flower shots. When i got back home, several of the flower shots i took had an incredibly fast shutter speed. Obviously this is a great, bright lens, i took photos of 1.8, 1.4 2, 2.8 aperture etc. I was shooting in Aperture mode, with a low ISO. I should mention the lens, and gear is perfect, i have taken images before and after, and they are excellent quality. The several i am referring to though were incredibly dark, which mystified me, as i was shooting wide open, on a lovely bright day. A few of the shutter speeds, were absolutely crazy like 1/32000, 26,000, i have never encountered this before. I used to use a Nikon D3500, with differing lenses. A few yesterday were ok in between the very dark ones, with speeds of about 1/3500. Obviously today i realised they somehow didn't get enough exposure time which made them so dark, the question i have is why did i obtain such high shutter speeds. If anyone can shed any light-no pun intended, on this i would be very grateful. I have not done any photography for a couple of years, due to poor health. So i am just trying to take things slow, i do love the new camera though. Thanks again, Simon.

Welcome to the forum.

Your camera has both a mechanical shutter (ms) and an electronic shutter (es). The ms tops out at 1/4000 and the es goes up to 1/32000. You can set your camera to only use one type of shutter if you wish or you can set it up to use both, it will then switch between them as its built-in algorithms choose depending on your other parameters — ISO and f-stop when using aperture mode. The setup menus allow you make the choice between the shutter options. Right now, it sounds like the “both” option is selected.

Many thanks for the welcome, and thank you for the advice. I had set it to both, i appreciate that.

Welcome to our forum. In bright light you should use f8 (at least).

Hi Olaf, thanks very much. It's just in this case i wanted about f2/2.8 etc for a nice bokeh with some flowers. Thanks again.
