Recent X70 lens spots

Recommended Posts

I don't really use my X70 often  I have an XT-1 as my main camera. I keep my X70 in my camera bag with the cap always on except when shooting.

And I noticed these spots on my pictures when the aperture is above 5.6   they are on the left side and on the bottom right....

I keep my cameras clean and have avoided any dusty environments..  has any one else had these issues with an X70? the warranty has expired and I just placed an order for a X100F.

these spots make me nervous about the X100F

any thoughts?

Commiserations! Must be really horrible. My first encounter with persistent specs or oil spots happened with my first Fuji X-E1 and it turned into a chain of events which lead me to buy the X-t1.

Sending the camera to Fuji from the NL turned into an very tiresome experience when it came back with even more problems that it had when the camera left my possession.

Unless you are absolutely positive that this specs are not on the front lens they can only be at the back or inside the lens or even on the sensor and become visible only at apertures past 5.6. In any other case than being on the front lens, they wouldn’t be accessible to you to service , therefore you need to send it to Fuji.

In general terms this is the reason why some folks prefer buying a camera with a fixed lens, because the camera will be protected by dust or other such things. The problem is, once spots are there, that it is way more difficult to deal with them. If this had been a X-A camera you could have had a go at cleaning the lens and sensor yourself and you will be good to go. As this stand you can’t do this.

There is no reason to extend your suspicion to other cameras this might be an isolated incident relative only to your copy. There are no diffused reports of this happening to others.

Good luck!

Unfortunately the exterior of the lens is clear, it only shows up in the pictures, not even in live view.  Yea I can clean them up in Lightroom CC but still shelling out 600+ dollars for a Fujifilm  camera  only to find out too late that I got a defective

one is a bitter pill to swallow...I hope when I get my X100F It's a good one.

The UV filter is a brilliant idea!  I would of never thought of that.     Ive kept my X70 with its cap on when not shooting and in my camera bag.  My XT-1 has been everywhere  beach, forest, desert, city, with many lens changes and  never once I had to clean the sensor or the inner parts of the lenses due to dust or foreign objects.   I'm very OCD about being very careful when changing lenses, some times I hike back to my car to swap lenses and go hike back to take the shot. I know its OK to change lenses in the field but An OCD is powerful thing... :(   So I'm very disappointed with my X-70's newly acquired spots disorder.

Yeah, it sucks. Lots of X70 and Ricoh GR owners feel your pain. I've got my fingers crossed that the next GR model will be dust/water resistant. With Fuji. I don't know. They discontinued the X70 so soon, they may not release an updated model and the new X100F doesn't have the weather sealing everyone hoped it would. Keep in mind that your X-T1 has an ultrasonic dust removal function on the sensor that runs whenever you turn it on/off. The X70 doesn't have that.

still, since the whole of the camera is not airtight ( and the seal of the filter isn’t either) it could have come from that, I think this aren’t specs of dust but, given the pattern, this is in all probability the product of condensation leaving droplet on the last element of the lenses, inside, and would have occurred anyway, filter or no filter. The use of UV filters is greatly pushed by shops because they make a ton of money on those no need to increase the paranoia about their use, most of the time they only mess with your picture by adding a surface way less pure than your lens adding only a false sense of security that if you smash the filter no harm would come to your lens!

I've just come across this thread, it looks to me like sensor corrosion and not dust.

I had a similar issue with both my Leica M9s and my Monochrome which also had a cracked sensor to top it all (see image below).

The give away is the dark spots surrounded by lighter circles, which is what seems to appear in your images as well.

It's noticeable in the bottom RH corner of your image #1.

I'm taking a wild guess here, maybe that's why Sony stopped making these sensors?

Send the camera back to Fuji, even if it's out of warranty, this is not normal. To their credit, Leica repaired all 3 cameras free of charge even though the warranty had expired some years prior.

Good luck & best,

Mike
