Firmware 2.0 reviews?

Recommended Posts

I have searched far and wide, but haven't found any reviews of the 2.0 firmware for the x-pro 2. Is the x-pro 2 really that much of a niche camera? I mean statistically there should be a blog or a youtube video somewhere raving about the (on paper) huge improvements. I have found many articles that simple go through the new specs, but none that tell of the perceived differences. Please help :-)

Rico,

https://fuji-x-secrets.net/2016/10/26/fujifilm-x-pro2-using-firmware-2-00/

Me!

http://adambonn.com/my-love-affair-with-the-fujifilm-x-pro1/xp2-thirty-six/

The thing with FW2.00 is that it was MAINLY improvements of existing features, and the addition of compatibility with a flash that's not out yet.

The AF speed increase is tangible, but as always with Fuji, light level and lens choice dependant

The X-Pro2 does now meter between shots in (low) burst mode. The min focus box in the OVF does indeed vary with the lens attached and you can shoot a single frame in AF-C burst mode. (To list some of the improvements)

These are 'yes it does that now' type improvements rather than things that need deep investigation (IMO)

It's not like when the XT1 got a whole new focus system and the XE2 got the XT2 features

I've been getting an average of about 100 extra frames per battery since the firmware update, and that's an excellent improvement

Thanks, Adam.

The first time I have heard about improved battery life with the firmware upgrade. That sounds great! Are you shooting in High Performance mode? I know I will.

I have tested the X-pro 2 in a store where I got it to back focus alot. Meaning that it often ignored the front most element and focused on the most contrasty part of the background instead. Do you know if this has been improved with the 2.0 AF? I mean they changed the eye focus to prioritize the front most eye.

Also, is it true that you can now half press the shutter for focus and take pictures without the camera refocusing after every shot as long as you only lift your finger half way between shots? My Nikon D90 did that and I have always missed that feature on the Fujifilm cameras.

I only have the "old" lenses (14mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4, 23mm f1.4), so I am wondering how much of an improvement I will get going from the X-Pro 1.

I am still "only" using my X-pro 1, but there are so many used X-pro 2's each week here in Denmark, that makes me - I know a lot of people want to go for the X-T2 - a bit anxious as to why so many give up on their X-pro 2 so fast.

No problem,

Yes FW2 improves battery life by giving you more options for 'auto power down' and it now features an auto power save feature too.

The AF is better on the XP2 and you should notice the difference...

The reason I'm being a little wooly about that is because AF is dependant on many variables, not least of which is user expectation

At the end of the day.. the difference between a slow af lens and a fast one, in ideal conditions is nano seconds...

0.10 vs 0.05 of a second (made up figures!!) is a big percentage, but a tiny amout of time in real life, and 0.05 is still enough time to miss *the* shot

I mainly use my XP2 (and XP1 before it) in manual focus mode, but when I do use AF I'm generally not disappointed. But this doesn't mean you wont be!

AF is very setting and subject dependant... if you use face recognition then you're not using PDAF for example...

An anaolgy I can think of that AF is a LITTLE bit like using a 'edge detect' brush in LR or On1 etc... if you want to mask off a dark building against an empty sky, then it works great, try it on someone's dark hair, billowing in the breeze who's standing in front of a dark background and suddenly the edge detect brush is rubbish ;)

Also AF depends on using the right sized focus box, correctly positioned for the framing, hopefully using the PDAF points

It's one of the main reasons I use MF, it might not be faster, but it's simpler (YMMV) and compared the XP1 the coloured focusing peaking on the XP2 REALLY glows

Yes it's true that not fully releasing the shutter button keeps the camera from instigating another AF run, but this isn't a FW2 thing, the XP2 has always done this!

The shops are full of lightly used cameras because people are fickle and always want the next new thing... for example, my HUNCH would be that the upcoming OMD m4/3 camera will see the shops full of lightly used XT2s as people become desperate to have a few more FPS and quicker AF than the XT2 has :)

This the link you end up at using Next Page from page 29.

https://adambonn.com/my-love-affair-with-the-fujifilm-x-pro1/xp2-thirty/

And this is the link that doesn't work when clicking directly on page 30

https://adambonn.com/my-love-affair-with-the-fujifilm-x-pro1/xp1-thirty/

Guess you just wont let go of the x-pro 1...

See the difference? :-)

Are there only two pages on the x-pro 2? At the end of the one about IQ there are two previous page links. Not a Next Page link.

No there's about 10 (well 4 are about RFC)

I'm going all through it now, trying to sus out my mistakes :D

Turns out copy and paste about 10 weeks ago and repeated each week was not my friend!! :D :D

Blue Jays are tricky to get good photos like you have, they tend to fly away as soon as the lens cap comes off 😀.
    • I own the Fuji X-T1 and X-H1. I own several Fuji lenses but I tend to use 3rd party vintage manual glass which I find quite enjoyable to use. I'm testing a photo here taken from my Flickr account that showcases the Tokina 100-300mm Zoom lens with 1.4 extender. • Forgot to mention another thing. Mine does not work if I plug the USB cord into a USB hub. It only works if I plug the cord into one of the USB ports on my computer itself (an iMac). This surprises me because I think there's a hub built into the computer itself, which is how the computer has multiple USB ports in the first place. I think it was somebody here that suggested I try that -- sorry I don't remember who!
    • On another forum someone suggested spraying some electrical contact cleaner into the wheel but the Fuji tech said that could risk frying the rest of the cameras electrical so I haven't tried that.
    • I have an x100VI with 1.01 firmware - did a reset already and didnt solve issue I am about to describe. Can you all see if your camera does this: Switch to C mode, step down to f16 and then press shutter half way. Does your screen go dark? I have tried playing will all settings (have had the following so quite familiar with the menus: x100, x100f, XT-2, X-Pro 2, XT-3) , only happens in C mode. If you find this can you report to Fuji @ digitalinfo@fujifilm.com. They told me they had not seen this before and that it was normal behavior because the shutter is closing, but the shutter closes in S mode as well.
