Open topic for Fujifilm Sports shots

Recommended Posts

As it seems that X-T2 is finally making breakthrough for sports photographers out there, I think it's time to make an open thread for sports shots also. So we don't need to make new topic any time someone shoots sports with Fuji :)

I start with some shots from this week.

Both shot with X-T2 and 50-140/2,8 and are JPEGs from camera, slightly edited in LR. I'm more and more moving to only jpegs for my work on Fuji, as the results from straight out of the camera files are just so good and I can save a lot of time using only JPEGs!

I always shoot night football on this field with a minimum shutter speed of 1/640, and try for 1/800 at midfield. Unfortunately, I rolled the dial on the finger grip and slowed down my shutter. Luckily Fuji fixed this with the lock feature on the new firmware. Unfortunately, it was after the season was over :)

As I still am in favor of using one thread for regular photos of one theme, not making a new one for each sports category or event, I'm going to post my latest basketball shots here.

Good shots - my question would be, how did they get to be silhouetted against the Hilton? Are they coming off of a small kicker? A big one? Are they coming out of a half pipe? Are they 5ft above the ground, or 50? Where are they going to land? If you include a bit more context the viewer will understand the story better

The picture below is from Getty Images. It's a motorbike not a skier - but the principle holds. The photographer had used a wide-angle lens to get in the take-off and the landing, and has included spectators for context. It tells a much more powerful story than a close zoom on the action alone

Hi

Here's one with a little more context... ;)

....it's from of Québec City's Winter Carnaval annual Ice Canoe Race.

First of all the English translation of the french expression "canot à glace" might induces some confusion, rest assure, the canoes are solidly made of high-tech layout of fiber: kevlar, carbon, fiber-glass, not ice.

Ice Canoes were used to be a traditional way of travelling on the St-Lawrence River in winter has now evolved into an all out endurance and quite extreme sport with more than 40 teams and a circuit of ten races. Québec City's race is one of the oldest in existence dating back to 1894...

It's only a 3 kilometers ride across the St-Lawrence River from Québec to Lévis on the South shore and back to the starting point. But then, there is the ice, and to make things worse there is also the current and the tide that can be quite strong too, it's not an easy ride. In the elite class, the man will do it 3 times for a total distance of 9 km, the women 2 times and the participation class only once. It's really an all out effort: the best time this year in the men's elite was 1:26:01 hours, with the second and third place finishing just a few seconds later in a epic duel.

Shot with a X-T2 + XF50-140 with the 1.4TC and a X-T1 + XF16-55.

Hi !

Here's a few pics of some really fast kids in the 1000 m race at the Coupe Québec No 3, a provincial level competition.

This was the last long track speed skating event of the 16/17 season at our local ice ring.

Speed skating is really a nice sport to shoot, I think we are quite lucky to have this type of installation here in town....

      Hello,
I have been shooting various sport events since 2003 until 2014 on Canon. Then quit action photography and switched to Fuji for more calm photography. Switching was one of the best decisions I've made! That quality of color and sharpness - it still surprises and makes me happy every day!
I've been asked to shoot some motorcycle races this season, so googling daily what are the best techniques for Fuji X-T2 because they dramatically differ from Canon. I would like to get some suggestions from You. So here are a couple of questions:
      1. Motorcycle straight on at high speed -  which AF Mode  - Single point, Zone or Wide/Tracking is more reliable?  What size of Single point or Zone? Best custom setting for it?
      2. Panning - same or different AF Mode is best? Best custom setting?
      If it's important what gear I plan to use - it is X-T2 + Battery Grip, 55-200mm, 90mm f/2, 35mm f/2, Samyang 12mm f/2 and 8mm Fisheye.
      Thank You all in advance!

      Audrius

      Hi all

I researched a lot, seeking info related to shooting sport photography when I considered my big jump from DSLR to the Fuji x-t2.
I did not find a lot, so having done the jump, I wish to share today my experience about the ergonomic differences between the Fuji x-t2 and the Canon 5dm3 for sports (at least the way I shoot sports :-) ).

      Hi !

I recently migrated from a canon to a fuji x-t2 for my sport photography. I had to find out how to focus sometimes on the left of the frame, and then a split second later to focus on the right of the frame... And... it's easy !

I describe how I do it on this post :

If you have additional ideas, suggestions, please leave a comment…Thanks !

I had an honour to be official photographer for FIBA at Eurobasket 2017 group A in Helsinki. Shot whole tournament with my Fujifilm X-T2 bodies with different lenses and has one backup Canon 5D MK III with 200mm F1,8 also with me (which didn't get too much work...). Unfortunately I didn't have my 90/2 with me as it fell from my bag couple of weeks before the tournament and I had to send it to get it repaired. There were many surprised photographers asking from me am I really shooting with Fujifilm. I was the only one who used anything besides Nikon and Canon, but as always Fujifilm didn't let me down!

      Hi fellow Fuji shooters!

I have been covering FIBA Basketball U18 European Championship Division B in Tallinn for FIBA Europe and as on Tuesday I received my new Godox AD200 flashes and Godox X1T-F transmitter, I have been trying them out on court! I have to say that at first it took some time to get used to new system as I haven't used flashes too much with Fuji before, but when I got the grip of it, it works well. HSS doesn't lose too much power with AD200 strobes, which is surprising and that way it works great for sports! The only issue I have found is that about every 6-7 shot I take the flash syncs too early or too late so I miss the shot. I don't know if there is something with my shutter speed (1/1000 - 1/2000s) or the venues. I hope to get more experience with the new system in different setups in upcoming weeks and hope to keep you also up to date with my findings! At least after to days of using the system I'm more than satisfied!
