Hi all,

I'm new to flash photography. I recently bought a Godox TT685 II for Fujifilm. I started watching an online tutorial on YouTube by Pal2Tech, but I already seem to struggle with some of the first steps.

I mount the flash on the camera, and then in the flash settings the mode doesn't change to "Shoe Mount Flash", but rather it only stays on "Sync Terminal".

TTL - mode is greyed out.

Mechanical shutter is on.. and if I use the the EF-X8 Flash, the mode changes to EF-X8, so this one is regonized.

Has anyone of you experienced this before?

Thank you!

Cheers,

Sarah

Sarah,

I don't have the TT685II so I cannot help you really. I have the Godox V860IIF and my flash behaves normally, I see "Sync Terminal" when the flash is switched off and I can cycle through "TTL-M-Multi-Off" when the flash is switched on.

(On the display of the flash, the last mode before Off stays displayed, i.e. when you go to Off from Multi you still see Multi on the flash even if it will not fire because you set it to Off in the camera menu and similarily if you turn the rotary dial on the camera the other way round and you go to Off from TTL then TTL remains on the display of the flash.)

I have also the Godox AD-200 and I use both flashes with the Godox X-ProF trigger and I have no issues. I used them with the X-T2 before, also no issues.

My XT-5 has the camera firmware at V2.03 and I haven't upgraded the firmware on the flashes a very long time, if ever. But maybe try to do that, I don't know, maybe the TT685IIF needs an upgrade.

Hi Sarah. I have the Godox TT685 II and an X-T5 and have not seen the problems you describe. I do wonder whether the "Sync Terminal" mention indicates that you have something connected to the sync terminal on the front of the camera. You didn't mention which camera you are using, but if you have a sync terminal (I'm guessing you do) please check whether there is anything connected or perhaps some dirt in the connection socket.

Sarah, Nick,

When I have the flash on the camera (in the hotshoe - I had mentioned using also the remote trigger but now I mean flash directly on the camera) but the flash is switched off (I mean by the physical switch on the flash, not in the menu of the camera), I see “Sync Terminal” in the Flash mode settings in the camera menu instead of the normal TTL-M-Multi-Off values cycled by by the rotary dial. When I switch the flash on, “Sync Terminal” disappears and everything works normally. This is not much help, I am afraid, but just to make it clear what I meant.

I could imagine drained batteries in the flash could cause a problem but I am sure Sarah tried that one. I once had funny behaviour of my older camera, an X-T2, with my Godox flash, when the battery in the camera was at a low charge level (and it was a third-party battery). After I put another one in everything worked fine again.

I get the exact same symptoms with my Godox TT350 on my X-T4 but I found that for some reason it depends on the sequence of connecting the flash unit and powering up. If I mount the flash and turn it on then turn the camera on then sync teminal is displayed and everything else greyed out - same as you. When I mount the flash then switch the camera on first and then turn on the flash last all is good. I've have absolutely no idea why that should be but there it is. Worth a try.

Hi all!

apologies for my late reply. I'm using the XT-5 with the latest firmware. I also tried to update the flash, but that's not possible. I'm using a MacBook and somehow that doesn't really work. Anyway, I tried everything.. including switching on the camera first, then turning on the flash. Nothing changes.

But I am using rechargeable batteries (fully charged) - maybe it might be worth trying different ones (need to buy some first). Will keep you updated! 🙂

Hi all, I've experienced the same thing with Godox TT685II F and my Fuji X-T20. Verify that the sound for flash and camera is On and for me the problem was that the flash didn't made perfect contact when mounted on the hot shoe, I had to push it a little bit further to make contact and then it finally connected properly, showing me the TTL options also in camera. It appeared it was mounted correctly but when I looked from below, the last metal pin from the flash was a little visible, a sign that it didn't made contact properly. Hope it helps someone 🍀

@PaulaT Thank you for pointing out the need for max contact between camera shoe and flash. I’ve had the same problem, I tried your fix and hey presto, XT-2 now communicating fully with the flash.
