Fuji X-S20 Overheating taking stills

I received my new X-S20 yesterday and was very excited to start using it. As I am new to mirrorless and indeed Fuji I decided to keep things simple and leave the camera in auto for my first test.  Having used the camera for about 20 mins  having taken about 60 photos I was presented with the overheating warning. I am currently awaiting a call from Fuji to confirm if I have a wrong setting somewhere.  I am aware that overheating can occur on mirrorless cameras but I was stunned that it should happen after only 20 mins of taking stills

Hi, same thing here,

I'm completely new to Fuji, i was just navigating the machine for half an hour, when a yellow warning of overheating showed up 😞 I'm having this cold feet sensation...

Hope this is the machine just settling in.

I spoke with Fuji who have suggested making changes to the auto sleep modes so that the camera shuts down when not being used.  They also suggested pulling out the lcd screen slightly to help with airflow.  I am going to try the auto sleep settings but I’m not convinced they are going to help if taking a reasonable number of photos within half an hour.

I have ordered an alternative brand to test as a possible change.  However I was very impressed with the images I was getting from the camera so I’d like to keep it if I can solve the heat issue.

I hope you manage to sort yours too.

Fuji has released a new cooling fan for the X-S20, which the higher end X-H2S camera can use.  It can attach to the camera and provide cooling while your using the camera.  It’s called the FAN-001 cooling fan, and it attaches to the back of the camera body when the screen is flipped out, and serves as an active cooling system for the camera to prevent overheating.  They retail for $199.99.

I love the new X-S20 but the overheating is a big problem for me. Seems like the fan settings in the menu only concern the video part of the camera. I really hope that Fujifilm solves the problem in the firmware updates. A camera that only can take 30-40 pictures before it overheats is no good for me. I am on holyday, and the new Fujifilm x-s20 is the only camera I haw with me.

Same here!

I bought the Fujifilm x-s20 few days ago and I am trying it out since but only for photos.
Friday around 15:00 I was out taking pictures for around 20 minutes in the sun (30+ C) and shadow and I got that little yellow icon and the message: CAMERA IS APPROACHING STANDARD TEMPERATURE LIMIT or something like that. Saturday evening it happened again, this time i was not in the sun!
I never got this problem on Canon or Panasonic! And I was not filming, just taking pictures.
Is it possible that some of x-s20 models have the problem and others not?
How long can I continue taking photos with that warning on? I am shooting events and I can not rely on something like this. I like the image coming from this camera very much but this overheating from only taking pictures is something that I never heard of.
Any advice will be welcomed.
Tomorrow I am calling my retail shop to ask more about this.
Thank you!

I am facing the same issues as you guys. :(

New to photography and Fujifilm. Received my X-S20 on 20 July.

Charged it up and the next day, I was figuring out the menu page. After 15 minutes, the yellow temperature warning light came on. I  thought it was strange. Googled it and read that it could be due to excessive use of the menu.

Tried shooting with it the following day. Only stills. The camera was on all the time. I was toggling between viewfinder and LCD, and the temperature warning comes on after about 20mins. (I felt I was using it normally, but is this an incorrect use of the camera?)

Anyway, I was intentional about the tests after and logged my use. On the average, for stills, it lasts about 20mins. For video, shot 4k, ambient room temp in about 30°C: yellow warning after 10 minutes, red warning light about 5 minutes after. Camera  shuts down after 15mins.

I love using the camera and really want to have fun experimenting and enjoying it. However, this rapid overheating warning issue is really a bummer and is restrictive.

Have to be really mindful when shooting stills (my friend told me that I can't constantly check my shots). This means it is also impossible for me to record a subject for a video interview (usually lasts at least 1/2 an hour), or experiment with ideas such as time lapse videos..

If anyone has any experience or advice, would be greatly appreciated.

For those of us having this issue, I hope we can have it sorted. Thanks guys!

Hi there, may I know if you have any feedback from your retailer? I also have the same issue of the temperature warning indicator coming on too soon, for stills (yellow warning about 20min) and video (shuts down after about 15mins)

  • 11 months later...

Hi,

I'm Andrea , im italian, I bought an S-20 and upgraded immediately the device to firmware 3.0.

Yesterday i've tested it during golden hour shooting only stills, after some minutes i started to get some warning and then the device shut down.

I know can happen in case of prolonged video recording, i was suprised to experience that, is the first time having to manage overheating issues while shooting photos, I'm 55 years old and i have/had a lot of cameras from different brands.

I also observed some evf lagging.

My guess is that having to process "film simulation recipe" can overload the processor , is better to activate "natural live view" and give up to the recipe preview ? Are there other setting that can impact ?

Can this be related to the last firmware ?

Thank's in advance for answering.

    • That is the way its designed - if you want to access files on the camera card you will need to transfer them to a computer
    • Will Fujifilm Ever Fix the Tethering Lockout Issue on the GFX 100S? I've been a commercial photographer for 15 years and an early GFX system adopter, starting with the GFX 50S and now using the GFX 100S as my main camera. I work on-site with clients, and they stand behind my laptop with live view open, making adjustments to the scene. At the same time, I need to be adjusting exposure and testing flash levels from behind the camera. The current system forces me to choose between live view or controlling my camera. Once live view is open, the camera is completely locked out. My clients take priority, but that means I can't change exposure settings or test flash levels while live view is running. The only option is to pull out the cable, which cuts off live view for my clients. I also can't trigger the shutter with live view open, so I have to completely stop live view just to set my flash exposures. I've been waiting for YEARS for this to be fixed, and I’m starting to lose hope. Capture One 16 now has dual control for other Fujifilm models (like the X-H2, X-T5, and GFX-100II), allowing control from both the software and the camera. But why is this only available for the GFX-100II? It's frustrating to see this implemented for a new $7500 camera while this long-standing issue on older models remains ignored. I am heavily invested in GFX, and the 100S with a 50S backup is perfect for me. I absolutely do not need to spend $7500 on the GFX 100II—especially not just to get this fundamental feature I've been waiting for so long. Nikon, Canon, and Sony don’t have this problem—this is a Fujifilm-specific issue, and it feels like something that could be resolved with a firmware update. Is anyone else having this issue? Does Fujifilm ever plan to address this in a future update? Honestly, I’m insulted that Fujifilm would introduce such an essential feature only for their new system instead of fixing what should have been addressed long ago. It feels like they're trying to push me to buy a new camera to get something that should have been available through a simple update.  This should be a firmware update, and it is long overdue. I feel like I'm the only user out there that has this need. It feels like Fujifilm will just move on and never implement it for cameras like the 100S. It drives me crazy on every shoot. I need this firmware update! Has anyone heard anything about this, or is there any hope of it being fixed? Will Fuji ever fix the camera lockout issue with live view on the GFX 100S and other GFX cameras?
    • I am having this same problem.  I must have set something wrong, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is!
