Manual focus during video recording not working

I have just upgraded my firmware to 1.70 and now my manual focus during video recording has stopped.

Manuel focus works fine to set up your focus but once you hit the record button, manual focus stays in the same position and the wire focus does not work.

I have tried this with three different lenses all with the same problem

Hi, I just started to use my video features on my XT3/4 (after years of just Photo shooting) and have discovered the same issue. I upgraded to the lastest firmware recently.

The 23mm f1.4 clutch lens DOES video MF in M mode..... UNTIL YOU HIT REC VIDEO. Then the MF ring doesn't do anything at all. BUT that same situation WORKS fine, on other non-clutch lenses (tested with 35f2, 18-55f2.8, 50-140f2.8, 56 f1.2)

Do you recall this happening only AFTER upgrading to the last firmware? If so, WE NEED TO MAKE FUJI KNOW, TO FIX IT ASAP!! This is very shameful FUJI!

I found a workaround. It's VERY clumsy but for now does the trick, WITH STRONG LIMITATIONS:

1) In M mode, with the clutch activated on the 23mm f1.4 lens, MF your scene.

2) Then Switch to S mode, making sure the FOCUS SQUARE IS AT THE SAME PLACE OF YOUR FOCUS INTEREST.

DONT SKIP THIS, otherwise the focus by wire will move the focus point (focus at other distance) the MOMENT YOU HIT REC, and then the LENS CLUTCH focus MARK and the CAMERA focus MARK WON'T MATCH, thus making IMPOSSIBLE to MF, as the THROW lenght AVAILABLE on the LENS CLUTCH won't be enough, so you cannot REACH EITHER THE CLOSEST OR LONGEST FOCUS POINT!! This happens because Clutch lenses have hard stops when MF.

3) Press Recording, and IMMEDIATLY TURN THE MF RING, VERY VERY SLIGHTLY, so to DISABLE AF, and therefore avoid the camera to move the focus point somewhere else. This is because despite being in S (rather than C) mode, the AF point KEEPS updating!!! ANOTHER BROKEN THING !!

4) This workaround will work ONLY if the camera Video settings for AF+MF is set to ON

5) With all the above, DONT MOVE THE FOCUS RING TOO FAST!!! Otherwise the lens-and-camera focus marks won't match again (looks like it loses the LINEAR FOCUS mode), and you won't be able to focus to infinity or closest, while REC video.

THIS IS A TOTAL MESS!!!!!!!. My workaround is a PITA, but at least it works, if you do it very very carefully!

BUT WE NEED TO MAKE FUJI FIX THIS. IT RENDERS CLUTCH LENSES TOTALLY USELESS FOR VIDEO!! HOW CAN WE SEND A PETITON TO FIX IT RIGHT NOW?

(I'M VERY DISSAPOINTED WITH FUJI after this! Hello Sony? Means no AF issues, Magic eyeAF, Insane Continus AF for photo/video, ISO 1million, etc, etc)

Are there any updates to this? Can’t believe that it hasn’t been fixed with another FW update yet. Just found out about this problem yesterday. I’m also surprised not many people are complaining about it.

Hi, The same problem here, with my XT4 (Firmware 1.7)

I contacted Fuji Germany and they said i should send them the camera. I told them that there are several customers complaining about that issue but they didnt respond to that.

Today i went to buy a used model in my town and to my surprise this Model (firmware 1.6) had that same issue!

Are there People having Problems even with that later Firmware Version?

I keep you informed if there are any news.

Regards,

Manuel

Someone from another forum having same issue contacted Fuji Korea. Then Fuji Korea contacted Fuji Japan to report the issue and  they said Fuji Japan have confirmed the problem and will develope the firmware update.

So I hope they will fix the issue soon.

Yes, same issue here. XT-3 + 23 1.4 with latest firmware... This absolutely ridiculous - the camera plus the lens are around 2000€ but they don't work together in video mode. Other lenses work fine, just the clutch ones don't. Is this supposed to be a professional product?

Hello again. As far as I know, no new firmware has been issued to fix this UNACCEPTABLE PROBLEM.

The camera and lenses were sold advertising certain amount of features. Now, those things belong to FALSE ADVERTISING.

IM VERY VERY UPSET. I VOTE FOR A LAWSUIT AGAINST FUJI, THEY HAVE MADE THIS MESS AND ARE NOT FIXING IT!

It seems like using an external recorder is a good workaround for this problem.

I just press record on my Blackmagic view assist - without starting to record on the camera itself. That way I can still focus.

Works until they release a Bugfix I guess

Hey guys,

Just want to let you know that we wrote to several Fujifilm repair centers, and I just seen they release v1.72 firmware to remove flaw caused all clutch lenses not being able to manual focus while recording. (23mm 1.4, 16mm 1.4, 14mm 2.8)

Give it a try...

Regards

    • Interesting, and a bit subtle. I also think it'd be better to activate on a half press. But there seems to be good reasoning behind a number of other choices, so I wonder if there's a good reason behind this one and we're just not seeing it. To some degree IS goes on and off like AF does, but this is an exception, isn't it?
    • I couldn't find my manual so downloaded a PDF copy and did some searching.  From p146 of the manual, regarding Shooting Only stabilisation: "Image stabilization enabled only when the shutter button is pressed halfway (focus mode C) or the shutter is released." So it appears that the camera is 'working as intended' and that in AF-S the stabilisation mechanism kicks in only as you release the shutter. I think I would prefer it to activate on a half press, like it does in AF-C.
    • Sometime a short break can help to phrase things so that they do not sound annoying, Well that is the hope anyway, so here goes. Having that meter would be nice as well as having the histogram. But having them or not is a minor consideration in terms of what you are wanting to do because the app does not work with intervalometers. The only way you can get a time lapse sequence using the app is to manually click the shutter button, wait then click it again and so on. Even if the meter were there, you would need extremely fast reflexes to see and react to a lighting change by changing the settings and then going back to clicking the shutter button. Doing that for hours would be a feat indeed. The equipment you mention does this by analyzing several past images and predicting what settings to apply to the next incoming image. Right now the app has the live view which will tell you if an area is over or under exposed, but as far as what you are wanting to do without being able to connect the app to an intervalometer, well …
    • I want to check with you guys on how image stabilisation is meant to work on the XT4 and whether I might have an issue. I was out with the camera yesterday with the 80mm macro lens, which has OIS, and the 1.4 Teleconverter and did some tests to see how good the stabilisation was performing by pointing at random objects/general landscape.  On the lens I had the OIS switch turned on and I selected the stabilisation to be always on in the menu option and was suitably impressed with how much camera shake was reduced.  However, when I went in the menu and selected Shooting Only for stabilisation I noticed something odd.  My understanding with this mode is that when you half press the shutter release the OIS is meant to turn on and stabilise the image just before completing the shot.  With the focus switch set to Continuous AF this is exactly what happened - shaky image, half press, stable image.  But, if the focus selector switch is set to Single AF I half press the release and I get no stabilisation.  The focus locks and the exposure locks but the image is still shaky in the viewfinder. I swapped out the lens for my 16-80mm kit lens and this performs exactly the same - no image stabilisation with Single AF selected, so it appears to be something to do with the body and not the lens. Is this normal?  I would be surprised if stabilisation only kick in when you fully press the shutter release because some shots are taken with tiny fractions of a second of exposure and the mechanism will still need a finite time to engage.
