Available :: Fuji X-E2 Firmware 4.00!

Recommended Posts

holy crap!

this  update  is  far more than I was expecting. I've been mostly  wishing for the af  system to match that of the X-T1's and looking forward togetting an additional Fn button  with the  exit  of the macro mode button on the  d-pad. Anything extra would  have been  a welcome  bonus  but I certainly wasn't expecting all that Fujifilm  have  given us.

Now   virtually every  feature and function that I regularly use  is immediately accessible, more  useful and/or versatile. 7 Fn buttons and  auto rotating EVF/LCD info  fer gawdz sakes.

So far, I'm liking the  new UI as well and the 3 configurable auto iso settings looks to be a superb feature.

Now my concerns over  my  decision to sell off  my X-T1's in  favor of X-E2 bodies have pretty much  been completely relieved. A very happy camper here.

Upon downloading ( Mac Imac Safari Yosemite ) I got the same double whamming ( two identical DAT files) which I had had when I downloaded the X-T1 firmware update. It was downlodaded onto my computer which no longer contains any trace of the previous DAT files.

Back then some people seemed to have this minor problem some didn’t. There is no use in repeating everything we have said last time about it. I am simply reporting it. Some people will have this, some won’t.

The reason why this happens is of little importance. If one does have that happening it is best to install the first of the two files.

I have installed the one without the 2 in the name ( number which is attributed by the computer when you download two identical files).

Installation was succesfull and I started play around with the camera as I always do. Upon trying the Electronic shutter for the first time, the camera froze. After taking out the battery, made sure that it worked, then  formatted the card downloaded the dat files again, after erasing the previous download, I have installed again the firmware.

I have then reset everything and now everything, including the ES, appears to work.

Of course this camera is slightly different from my X-T1 and sometimes the difference can be a little confusing.

I'm blown away by the upgrade. It's a really tired phrase, but it really feels like a new camera.

I love all the new possibilities for function buttons, I love the new autofocus, I love the new way to change view mode (no more menu!). There so may great things.

The focus peaking seems to have been updated, I now get highlighted outlines of in-focus areas in some situations, I can't remember that the peaking has been this pronounced before, but maybe I'm just thinking that everything is new because it feels so new.

Great update, thanks Fuji! There are many improvements.

Two things I don't like after a few tests (for the moment):

- If you set MF and Focus peaking in low light I think that there's more noise than before. Without focus peaking doesn't happen.

- It seems to be a little slower writing in the memory card.

Has anyone noticed this?

AF, electronic shutter, new UI, Fn buttons, etc are great.

The preview exposure in manual mode ( which I don’t use all that much as I shoot mostly in aperture priority) left me at first with a little perplexity but it then grew on me, because, and this is the great performance of the mirrorless cameras, you see directly what the results of the exposure will be.

The manual helped me to find almost everything I was looking for.

One thing I am still wondering about is the fact that I can chose the color of the background of the menu on my X-T1 ( I have used a few X cameras but I can’t remember how it was on the X-E1 and X-M1 but I am pretty sure that I could change it in the X10 ). I understand this is hardly an essential feature but I like green more than I like white  .

All great so far, but why Fuji did you take "Video" out of the Drive menu? I very rarely use video and do not want to have to waste an Fn button on it. I have put it on the top plate button as it is out of the way, but as it is marked wifi - it would have been nice to use it for that as marked. Very forgetful at my age.

This update is great! However I need some help using the 27mm with the electronic shutter. Does anyone know if it's possible to set a shutter speed over 1/4000? If so how do you do it? If i set the dial to 1/4000 and then use the dial I end up changing the aperture.

By changing the Command Dial setting to shutter speed. You can also assign Command Dial Setting to a function button for quick access.

Blue Wrench Tab #2 ---> Button/Dial Settings ---> Command Dial Setting ---> S.S.

Cheers.

Yes I've noticed it here too. There's definitely more noise than before. Let me know if you figure out a solution. Thanks

This is a big update, i had to crack open the new manual as there is a lot packed into the menus now.

Just wanted to pass along a few observations while shooting with the 27mm (this was from last night, so imagine: indoors, incandescent lights, etc)

The addition of zone focus is largely what makes this a brand new camera, as others have noted. It takes the multi (area) focus setting in previous firmware, but the camera restricts itself to the pdaf points on the sensor. It now (finally!) focuses generally like it always claimed (.05s) - i would say that on average, it actually is faster than single point focus for the following reason: the camera reacts like it uses multiple pdaf points at same time to aid focus (this shows on the screen as several focus point boxes, and those boxes are really not a gimmick). So a particularly tricky auto-focussing scenario with low contrast or a single line becomes much easier for the camera because it can pull in much more information to arrive at a focusing solution.

Continuous and zone focus work well in these (not great) lighting conditions also. This is a big deal - continuous focus is not largely a fake switch on this camera anymore.

Going to wide area focus with continuous focus caused the 27mm lens to rack focus back and forth, so it appears that in wide focus the camera does not attempt to give preference to the pdaf points. So, I would recommend generally sticking with the zone focus setting.

Thanks T-man, that helps. However I tried setting the command dial setting to fn1 but it doesn't seem to do anything. Am I missing something here

Thanks again

This is how it is working for me: Fn1 assigned to Command Dial Setting. SS Dial in manual. Clicking the Fn1 button switches between Aperture and SS. Both will appear in blue text with a half circle appearing above the one selected. This is assuming that you have the XF 27mm f/2.8 mounted. Cheers.

So, do you a bit disappointed with your recently acquired X-E2 (f/w 4.0)? Having both cameras on hands how can you assess them?

    • Looking more like the next Fuji camera we see will be an X-T50 but it is still a rumor and no specs have been published.
    • Hey guys, The shutter on/off button switch may be loose on mine. After turning camera on and pressing the shutter/holding close to the area, the camera will turn off and say 'sensor cleaning'. This doesn't happen if I'm shooting via touch screen at all. Everything else is functional. Anyone else experience this before? Would love a much cheaper fix since Fuji Canada just quoted me $700 CAD to fix it, and considering everything else is functional except that part I'm not even sure why MPMB Main Board parts is being replaced😕 I got no explanation from them either.
    • As far as I know the firmware is not country specific. Are you sure that the filename has not been changed ( I am told this can happen with mac os). That's the only thing I can think of.
    • My x-t5 does not exhibit the focusing switch behaviour as you report it, so that is very strange and indicative of a fault. It does not matter whether the flash is attached or not. Once you set the camera for your studio flash, say 1/250th at f5.6, the camera, which is showing you what you will get at that exposure without the flash, will show a black screen unless the ambient light is brighter than what you would typically get indoors. That is why, as Jerry says, you have to set preview exp/wb to off. I have set a button for this.
    • I connected to FRAME.IO a while back and it works fine, but the camera wouldn't connect to the internet all of a sudden today and would get stuck on the reset screen, including initializing and even switching USB Connection mode. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?
