IBIS : Shoot Only vs Continuous with XF16-80

Recommended Posts

Lately I noticed the pictures taken with X-H1 and XF16-80 were kinda blurry. But luckily every picture taken with my primes was OK.....
Of course the blurriness can be seen only enlarging the pictrures up to 100% .
I was about to throw my XF16-80 zoom in the trashcan , when I had an idea :    I switched the stabilization from continuous to "shoot only"
Et voilà  :   now all pictures taken with my zoom are crisp and sharp !

Why, oh why ?  Where is the problem with Ibis continuous?   is it the camera ?  or the zoom lens ?

p.s. :  both camera and lens firmware are updated.

I didn't chang the front switch ( S/C/M ) , that's for focusing:
I changed the stabilization setting ( Ibis )   : from continuous to shoot-only.
This wrong behaviour shows up only with my Zoom lens, not with my prime lenses.

The tests I did today were shooting a tree in front of my windows , no wind at all.
And I discovered that pictures taken with shoot-only are wharp, while with continuous Ibis are not.   This problems is with every exposure time from 1/500 sec. down to 1/30th

The interaction between OIS and IBIS in the X-H1 is a known issue with multiple lenses. To date Fuji has never solved it in firmware updates and over the past two years their only updates for the X-H1 were about fixing new gear (new lenses or flash) to the X-H1 and the bugs that came out of that. Not about fixing X-H1 inherent bugs. I fear that we don't get that level of support anymore for the X-H1. That's why I stopped using it for professional work.

Correct. Fuji issued a few firmware updates to correct issues with the combination of IBIS and OIS for the X-Trans 4 platform (X-T4 and X-S10) but not anymore for the X-Trans III platform (a/o X-H1). In general there is no support anymore for that platform other than accommodating for new lenses or speedlights and fixing bugs that come out of these new firmware updates. I've done some tests last year with my X-H1 and the 10-24 and it wasn't solved then.

I have not heard of this particular problem with the X-H1 before. I am not saying it doesn't exist, I just am not aware of it. I do not own the XF 16 - 80 lens, however I did perform a test with the XF 10 - 24, XF 16 - 55 and XF 100 - 400 all mounted on my X-H1.  All at low shutter speeds of about 1/25. All were shot at focal lengths of 24mm, 55mm and 400mm respectively and I saw no difference in sharpness whether the IS was set to continuous or shooting only. All images were very sharp. You might want to contact Fuji.

    • I setup my C1 for bird and action settings. ISO3 (shutter 2000, 125-6400ISO, AF zone, bird). If I'm on a single ISO setting and select C1 it will not go to the AUTO3 setting. If I'm currently on auto iso1 or iso2 it will go to iso3 but the top iso value displays as 1600 even though I set it to 6400 max)? I basically still need to go in and manually change to auto3 to get it to work. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    • LCD Problem on my X-H2. Camera is 3 months old.  Just this week, LCD was not going on, or it was on then went off, while opening it and turning it outward. Eventually it would come back on after a minute or two. Doesn't happen all the time, but did happen a few times while hiking in cool weather. Has anyone else experienced this yet? I have the settings so that the LCD goes off when I'm using the EVF and I know where that sensor is, so its not user error. I know there have been issues with Fujifilm LCDs in the past, so I'm concerned that this will get worse and I'll have to give it up for a month while its repaired. I'm still within the Amazon return window so considering sending it back for a replacement. All comments and suggestions are welcome and thanks!

    • There are several ways to fix that. Try this, go to System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then select the Privacy tab. Scroll down and click Full Disk Access. There should be a little + symbol somewhere, click on it and you should be given a dialog box to find the app you want to add. Select it. Now, along the way you will have to enter your password (assuming you have permission to add / delete applications, etc.) to give permission for these thing to happen. An easier way is to delete the app, empty the trash, restart the machine, and reinstall the application, only this time give it the needed permissions as you are going. As far as the tiff files go, it depends on the converter you are using. If they export in 16 bit tiff format, (do not use eight bit) you should have the data but when you open it in your editor, it will have the selected profiles applied as a starting point. ie your white balance, film simulation, etc. etc. because that information is embedded in the tiff from the raf, and used by the editor as a starting point to display the image. Some manufacturers' raw files are actually tiff files with a little proprietary info added in, I have read that Adobe's DNG format is just that as well, a tiff file with a few other things tossed in for good measure. Fujjifilm is now using tiff as a storage option along with .jpg and .raf in their latest camera releases. It is a good format.
    • Hi Jerry, thanks so much; I already downloaded Rawtherapee v5.8. But as I am using Mac OS 12.6, probably there is some issue. There is an instruction in their website  '  Drag sh into the “Full Disk Access” pane under the “Privacy” tab in the “Security & Privacy” control panel in “Apple menu” > “System Preferences”. I tried to do but couldn't do it. So I didnt have the access to the photo folder. I already had other raw converter. Are all the data in TIFF kept as same as RAF? then I can edit it in darktable or Lightroom ( I have older version in my different laptop).
