Affinity Photo and Compressed RAF files.

Hi,

My first ever post on these forums so hello to everyone, I've done a search but was unable to find anything that relates to the issue I'm writing about here, so my apologies if that isn't the case and could someone kindly point me to that thread?

Before I proceed and in fairness to Affinity Photo checking down their list of supported cameras and at the time of writing, I couldn't see the X-T4 listed so the issues I'm experiencing maybe due to that model not being supported yet.

For the benefit of those that don't have this feature, in the I.Q. menu of the X-T4 there's a menu labelled 'RAW RECORDING' with 3 options: UNCOMPRESSED, LOSSLESS COMPRESSED AND COMPRESSED.
If I take photographs using either UNCOMPRESSED OR LOSSLESS COMPRESSED open them in Affinity Photo no issues, however if I attempt to open the COMPRESSED version of the RAW file all I get is a an image that's split 50/50 down the middle on one side it's totally black and on the other side it's totally white.

I can't replicate this issue in Photoshop, Camera RAW, Capture One 20 or Luminar 4, even Windows Explorer gives me a thumbnail preview, my work around is to convert the files to another format e.g. tiff or similar and I can open the image for editing in Affinity Photo.

Has anyone experienced this, if so are there any other work-arounds? It's no biggy as I'll avoid the  COMPRESSED option, but I thought I'd raise this for the benefit of others and also for anyone that's interested in double checking my findings.

For the record I'm editing using a Windows laptop but I've also tried and experienced the same on my Windows based desktop computer.

I have posted a similar thread on the Affinity Photo forum but still waiting for someone to review the message.

I saved the 3 images out as jpgs from Affinity Photo and have attached them to this topic, labelled according to the setting I used in camera.

Thanks jerryy,👍

Well! I certainly cocked that one up for a first time post, although I did look at their list of supported cameras even doing a search on the web page I didn't see the X-T4 listed.

Once again thanks for responding jerryy, I will book an appointment with the opticians.

Regards,
Patrick

  • 1 year later...

When I take pictures, it turns out that every photo in the camera is too small. I didn’t know how to solve this problem, so I went to Google. There I found a man who told me that this is a photograph format problem, and to fix it you need to reformat in some program. So I did, I went to the torrent via u1337x.org, and then I downloaded the first program for formatting photos. It helped me.

    • Looking more like the next Fuji camera we see will be an X-T50 but it is still a rumor and no specs have been published.
    • Hey guys, The shutter on/off button switch may be loose on mine. After turning camera on and pressing the shutter/holding close to the area, the camera will turn off and say 'sensor cleaning'. This doesn't happen if I'm shooting via touch screen at all. Everything else is functional. Anyone else experience this before? Would love a much cheaper fix since Fuji Canada just quoted me $700 CAD to fix it, and considering everything else is functional except that part I'm not even sure why MPMB Main Board parts is being replaced😕 I got no explanation from them either.
    • As far as I know the firmware is not country specific. Are you sure that the filename has not been changed ( I am told this can happen with mac os). That's the only thing I can think of.
    • My x-t5 does not exhibit the focusing switch behaviour as you report it, so that is very strange and indicative of a fault. It does not matter whether the flash is attached or not. Once you set the camera for your studio flash, say 1/250th at f5.6, the camera, which is showing you what you will get at that exposure without the flash, will show a black screen unless the ambient light is brighter than what you would typically get indoors. That is why, as Jerry says, you have to set preview exp/wb to off. I have set a button for this.
    • I connected to FRAME.IO a while back and it works fine, but the camera wouldn't connect to the internet all of a sudden today and would get stuck on the reset screen, including initializing and even switching USB Connection mode. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?
