Fujifilm XT20 kit lens causing flickering issues

Hello! I’ve been the owner of a Fujifilm XT20 for years now, and have since moved on to the XT-2 and X-A5.

i kept the kit lens though. Unfortunately as of today, when I attach the lens system, I cannot control the camera anymore, the EVF and LCD of my XT2 begins to flicker violently, shutting on and off, and refuses to take pictures or pull up any menu. It will also display an image throw the lens until it clicks into place and once it’s locked is when the stuttering begins. 
 

I tried it on the X-A5, while less dramatic, was still posing the same issue. This is the only fujinon lens it does this with - my 35mm fujinon and my vintage glass work fine. Any idea of what could be happening here? Any solutions?

First step is to clean the electronic contacts on the lens. This sounds exactly like a case of dirty/worn contacts
