  1. So, I have found a used 14mm f2.8 and can't decide whether to buy it or pay more for the 16mm f1.4. Resolution wise the 14mm should be quite a bit better than the 16mm, but the f1.4 and close focusing abilities of the 16mm appeals to me. One of the positives that is most often mentioned about the 16mm is its close focusing ability at 15cm, which if you subtract the length of the lens amounts to like 6cm's from the front element. Quite impressive. BUT, the 14mm is supposedly able to close focus at 18cm's, which if you subtract the length of the lens amounts to approx. 12 cm's from the front element. Plus the fact that the lens has a wider view. That is not so bad, right? What are your thoughts on this and would you mind showing some samples of the close focusing abilities of the 14mm? Preferably with people in them. Thanks. 2. Hi everyone, I recently purchased a XE-2 with a 35mm 1.4 and 18-55mm zoom lens. I've noticed the 35mm lens is quite noisy, which is an observation echoed by many others. My concern regards the noise and vibration when manual focusing. I've seen a lot of people referring to the annoying chattering type noise when autofocusing, which seems to have been made better with firmware updates, but not many people discussing noise issues with manual focusing. All my other lenses don't make any noise at all when focusing manually. This lens almost seems like it's making a sort of electronic noise and feels jittery when rotating the focus ring. My 18-55mm kind of makes a similar sound (although no jittery feeling), but it's barley noticeable. I guess I just want to know is this normal?
  3. So, if we ignore the noise, AF speed and one stop difference of the two lenses, which one is then optically best? I have read numerous tests, blogs and reviews that say the two are both sharp, contrasty and colorful (with the f2.0 being slightly warmer) however I have also encountered quite a few tests that have tried both lenses in Capture One where you can remove the distortion and vignetting correction done by software. And in those reviews it seems like the f2.0 lose, by a large margin, as the f1.4 is optically better corrected. As it is well known, software correction slightly degrades image quality. But will it be an issue? Now, I don't have any of the lenses, so what are your thoughts if you have or have had both lenses. And remember! Disregard noise, AF speed and one stop difference. I am only after the optically best lens :-)
  4. What are the rendering characteristics of the Fujinon XF lenses. I am not the only one who loves the 35mm f1.4's rendering, so are any of the other XF lenses rendering like it? Here are my observations: 35mm f1.4 - the magic lens, with a very cinematic rendering where colors, light and sharpness is quite beautiful - almost like vintage lenses from the 1970's. 23mm f1.4 - a lovely lens, very sharp and with - in my opinion - a more neutral rendering. 18-55 f2.8-4 - very sharp lens with a warm rendering. What are your thoughts?
  5. Help me understand what is meant by distortion when sites like lenstip.com rate the Fujinon 14mm f2.8 truly impressive, because it has virtually no distortion, and yet, when I look at the group shot of the girls on this blog, the girl on the left edge of the frame hopefully does not like that in the real world. It looks like she is being somehow stretched towards the upper left corner. Why is that?
  6. I just bought the 35mm f1.4 used, and despite the noisy AF I just love the lens. Actually I find the AF quite decent on my x-pro 1. So, now I have the option of buying a used 23mm f1.4 to about half the price, and would really like to have it, but I wonder if the focal lengths are to close. Would it be better to go for something wider or are there enough difference between the two to warrant a purchase? As of now I have the 18-55 and the 35 f1.4 in my arsenal. The zoom only being used for snapshots. I like the rendering of primes better even though the 18-55 actually is quite good. Look forward to your opinions/advice :-)
  7. I have the X-T10 since August, I absolutly love this camera after years of D90, it came with XC 16-50 and 50-230, sold the later as I have no use for it. The xc 16-50 is very good but feel a prime lens like the new 23mm f2 could give me more fun, IQ and will push me to advance my photography skills. By IQ I am not only talking sharpness but also contrast,microcontrast,tonality,colors... What do you think? should I get one or keep my money ?
  8. After moving to Fuji X system I extensively used large number of Trans-X bodies and XF lens. Most of them perform excellent optically and very good mechanically. I think Fuji is doing great job designing and supporting gear. The only thing is bothering me all the time - if the electronics is dead lens typically becomes fully unusable. There are numerous third party or adapted fully manual lens that solve that concern. But what if I want to keep using my favorite Fuji optics mechanically? I've performed numerous attempts and discovered potential of converting XF 35mm F1.4 and XF 27mm F2.8, and recently found highly satisfying result of adapting Fujinon XF 27mm F2.8 that requires relatively low effort. Here's resulting article explaining what can you do with electronically dead Fujinon XF 27mm F2.8 lens to bring it back to life in much more compact frame of Industar 50-2. Alternatively you can also use adapted Fuji XF 27mm F2.8 lens on other APS-C cameras like Sony or Canon.
  9. Modern Fujinon lens have electronical parts that may fail due to water damage or other reasons. In most cases it worths pay for repair, but sometimes repair costs are too high and its cheaper to just buy another sample. This Fujinon XF 27mm F2.8 sample was electronically broken, so I've found relatively simple way to convert it into fully manual focus lens. 10. Hi guys. Can U tell how good in fact is this lens? Is it worth the money? If it not depends on focal lenght, the xf23 is really this better, with the price almost twice as high?
  11. https://insigniachiaki.wordpress.com/2016/01/19/x-gene-a-love-and-hate-story-fujifilm-x-pro1-x-t1/ Hi! I would just to like you guys to know that I have created a blog and written my impressions of the X-T1 and X-Pro1 in a post there. I have shot Fuji for a year now, more or less. It would be great to have some feedbacks! Thanks!
  12. Hi All,I recently published a Fuji-centric article on the best lenses for infrared photography. Most of the lenses I tested and reported on are XF mount. I did include some Sony FF and Micro 4/3 as well. I include several images too, of course. You can see the article on PetaPixel or my blogHope you find it useful!Happy shooting,Joel
  13. Something bizarre happened today. I was taking pictures with my XF 56mm f/1.2 (non-APD) coupled to an 11mm Fujifilm Macro Extension Adapter on X-Pro1. Camera locked up during focussing and the aperture ring felt sticky. Upon restart the aperture ring stopped clicking. Tried on three other bodies (X-E2, X-T1, and X-T10) same issue, and more than often the camera OS freezes requiring reboot. It happened to my Xf 18mm f/2 once while using it on an X-E2 body. I had the same 11mm Macro Extension Adapter coupled. At the time the lens was still within dealer's return period and was exchanged by the store. BTW, I do use both (11mm and 16mm) Macro Extension Adapters quite frequently. Any of you guys ever had this happen? Is there anything I can do to fix my lens or do should I send it in for warranty repair? Cheers!
  14. Hey friends, this comparison is very rushed and won't be of much use to many of you, but since both of these lenses are hard to find in stores for most people, here is a little comparison to help you avoid wasting $500 to $1000 on either of these. This is the Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 compared to the Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f/1.6 with an honorable mention of the Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 Side by Side: They honestly are about the same size and weight, which is surprising since the fuji is faster and has autofocus.
