  1. I headed over to Silverstone on Saturday afternoon to shoot the Hankook 24hr Race with my new 100-400mm on my X-T10. It was a great experience and the kit worked superbly well, despite the challenging conditions... 2. Hi ! I went to one of the local ski center last Saturday with my X-T1 and XF50-140 + XF1.4TC combo to shoot some university level FIS sanction Slalom race (they are fast!). There was also a Free Style event on the slope right by the slalom course so I was able to get a few SIF ( Skiers In Flight) pics as well. 3. I pre-ordered an X-Pro2 from Amazon and now have about 1,000 images or so under my belt. This last weekend I attended the Alabama High School Rodeo for a few hours and decided to try the X-Pro2 shooting action. What I had not counted on was the total crap (low, low) light. The rodeo was held in the indoor arena in Montgomery. It is decades old with horrible lighting. I shot at 8,000 - 12,800 ISO for the entire time, inside. The light was so dim I had to use my 60mm f2.4 Fujinon lens, wide open and could go no higher than 1/800th sec shutter speed. This was not ideal. I needed at least 1/1000th sec to stop the action but you do what you can. Even with this exposure I am guessing I was about a full f-stop under what I needed. I was totally blown away at how well the X-Pro2 performed. I shot in Acros G and Classic Chrome simulations and shot only Jpeg. My settings were -4NR, 0 HTone, -2 STone, +2 Color (CC) & +1 Sharpening. I was in continuous focus, zone focus mode. Take a look at my Blog Post for my impressions of the X-Pro2. For much larger versions of the sample images check out my Flickr Page.
  4. Hi again! Here is a few pics from l'Épreuve du Nord, a SAE mini-Baja endurance race. The Engineering Department at Laval University has been hosting the northernmost race in the circuit for the last 11 years, it's also the only one to take place in the snow ! It's the second time that I get a chance to shoot this really amazing and gruesome 2 hours event, out of the 27 Bajas on the starting line only 14 will make it to the end! 5. Hi All ! This is a classic here during the Winter Carnaval, this sport is very specific to the St-Lawrence River and it's history, I don't think there is any other place where you can see something like it. This really active and dynamic sport is very demanding for the athletes, in this race the pro class will do a total of 15 km, crossing the river three time. During the winter there is a total of 7 races along the St-Lawrence River, and lucky me, two of them are in my home town, Quebec City. Not much ice on the river this year made it easy and fast for the "canoteurs", but it was less spectacular for us the spectators and photographers. Never the less it was a great opportunity for some good action shot. Here's a link to the Wikipedia article about the sport: Ice canoeing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I used mostly my X-T1 with the Xf50-140mm + XF1.4 TC and a second body, my good old X-E1, paired with the XF16-55 for close shoot. I was standing right by one of the three buoys delimiting the race course, so it was easy to get some shots of the canoes coming toward me. The Flickr Album: Course CMQ 2016 Thanks for looking ! 6. The PBR was in town on the weekend so I thought it would be a good time to test out my new X-T2. In reviewing my images, however, none were acceptable. Some things that worked against the camera: - It was an indoor venue so the lighting wasn't best. - Pyrotechnics were used at the beginning and the haze was prevalent throughout the event - Apparently most bulls are black. Most cowboys wear black. Most of the signs in the background are black. In other words, there was a lot of black! This would make it very hard to pick up focus points. Settings: I used the battery grip with boost mode on, - XF55-200mm lens, and my settings were - ISO 12,800, - Aperture f/5.6, - shutter speed 1/640s, - AF-C, - Zone, - full selection of focal points, - AF-C custom was both Accelerating/decelerating objects and ignore obstacles. Conclusion: I believe that the low shutter speed was the culprit as the images of the crowd and other entertainers were fine. I couldn't get the shutter speed up to 1/1000s where it needed to be. In hind sight, I could've tried and then boost exposure in Lightroom. I also could've used my 50-140 but was concerned that the f2.8 would be too narrow a DOF and I wouldn't get both the bull and rider. Also, with the 50-140, battery grip and 3 batteries...it was getting into Nikon weight! It was a good test to learn the limitations of the camera. I think for outdoor rodeos, sports, action, it would work fine. The blackout period between bursts was virtually non-existent and I feel it was grabbing focus fast it was just that even at 12,800 ISO, shutter speed was too low to capture. I still have work to do on my settings and I still require more practice of sports photography but I learned that Bull riding and other rodeo events should be around 1/1000s. Who knew? I've posted some jpgs straight out of the camera with no post done to show you the results. I've also included one of the images of the entertainer to show that it was sharp.
