johant got a reaction from jlmphotos in 35mm f2 vs f1.4
Tried the f/2 of a friend, and decided to keep my f/1.4. It's magic.

Of course; it stabilises the sensor, and not your subject. -
johant reacted to graflex in X-T20 skin tone issue
Given the structure of the X-Trans CFA I can imagine that you're looking at demosaicing artifacts in the squarish pattern that you're seeing. X-Trans is more prone to artifacts in the demosacing process than a Bayer array, but you must understand that all demosaicing of CFAs produces artifacts -- no option exists not to do that and at 527.3% magnification no option exists not to see them. Just remember that at 527.3% magnification you may also be seeing artifacts created by the software enlarging your image to that size and/or an interaction between those artifacts and the demosaicing artifacts that you can no longer really see because of that interaction.
Look at the photo on screen at 100% magnification. Does it look OK?

Or look at it at 33% considering that is what it will look like in print!

johant got a reaction from Guzzi Jim in User review of useful lenses plus advice sought
When I am convinced that I need something new, I take out my "old" X-Pro1 with the 18mm or 35mm, and go for a walk (or go visit some event). That usually cures the urge.
Last vacation, I only had my X100T with me (in France). I had a great time.
If I personally would want to have "everything" covered, I would take a 18-55 with me (which I do not have anymore). I have a 18-135 because I bought it as a kit with the X-T1, but I seldom use that. Too heavy and large, and too many optical compromises. The X-T1 is my least used camera anyway (and an example of when I wrongly convinced myself that I needed something new).
I don't think it really matters which lens(es) you take to Thailand, as long as you limit yourself to two or three. Each focal length gives you unique opportunities to see.

I miss the DoF marks on the aperture ring - which my X100f doesn't have, but most film cameras do have. I guess there just isn't enough room on the lens barrel.

johant got a reaction from SOLDATI in Fujifilm X-H1
I've stopped following the camera news basically ... when my X-PRO1 or X-T1 break, I will look around again for what's hot then.
Perfectly happy with the 16MP cameras here ... less happy with the time I currently have to process my photos :-(

My oldest daughter is a teacher (in training) as well. The salary is not great, compared to what you can make in private sector jobs, but I am very proud of what she's doing.

johant got a reaction from claude in Fuji “ Non Plus Ultra”?
I don't feel that sentiment really; it's just a company, like the other companies. Of course I hope that Fujifilm stays in business with the X-cameras, because of the XF lenses that I put money in. But I really don't care if Fujifilm or Sony or Nikon become market leader. The only thing I care about is that they make a camera that works for me (small, lightweight, hybrid viewfinder, excellent stills capability, as battery efficient as possible). If another brand chooses to specialise in 3D photography, video, or online media integration, that's perfectly fine with me.
Fujifilm make great cameras with the X-Pro and X100 series. As long as they keep doing that, I am happy.

johant got a reaction from KateB in Shooting in RAW
Oops ... apologies for the terse explanation! And thanks to the other contributors to step in, explaining what I meant [emoji4]
Indeed, you can tell the camera to store both the RAW and JPEG file. For the JPEG, you can select the size and quality ("normal" or "fine").
One thing that seems to confuse some people; since the RAW file contains raw sensor data plus metadata, it depends on your RAW converter whether Fujifilm film simulation settings are applied. With the JPEG, they are "baked in", of course.
Another fun thing; the cameras have their own RAW converter on board (of course), which allows you to create different JPEGs from the same RAW file in the camera. You'll find out when fiddling with the "Play" menu.

Probable launch date for the X-E3. -
johant got a reaction from KateB in Shooting in RAW
It's not correct indeed. As a matter of fact, if you do not store the JPEG, then only a small JPEG embedded image is stored. That limits your options for previewing on the camera, if you like doing that.

Different preferences for different people; that's why there are several options. Glad you enjoy your MF lenses [emoji4]

johant reacted to Jaco van Lith in X-E1, is it still worth it?
Is the Fuji X-E1 slow ? It is not ! My Hasselblad 500 C/M is slow. And my Linhof Master Technika is even slower. Look for the photographes of the Hindenburg zeppelin disaster at Lakehearst N.J. at May 6th 1937. Mr. Becker made 15 exp. in less than 50 seconds.
The photographers shot plenty of pictures with 4 x 5 Speed Graphics. They were not whining about the speed of their cameras, They were professional photographers. The limitation of the speed is in the photo amateur's mind.
