  1. I got hooked immediately to Irident X-Transformer and I bought a licence right away. X-Transformer does a fantastic job at demosaicing , not so fantastic at NR+sharpening, expecially at high Iso. When I convert I leave every setting at default, but I disable Sharpening and Luminance Noise Reduction . For NR+sharpening I rely on NeatImage ( a photoshop add-on)
  2. I own both the 50-230 and the 55-200 . Usually pictures taken with one or the other don't seem much different...... but recently I made a test, to check better the IQ of each. I took some pictures of a fine fabric, from 1 mt / 1.5mt far. at both zoom ends : about 55 and 200 . Raw files, processed with the same parameters. and.... wow !!!!!! the fine textures are much much cleaner with the XF55-200 !! My conclusion is that the XF55-200 pictures quality is noticeably better, but only in some areas, with some subjects. Anyway for now I put the XC50-230 in a drawer. I think I will be carry the XF55-200 fron now on .
  3. my EF-42 is very fast, compared to the EF-X20 :-( I'm not joking : when set in full TTL mode it recharges in less than a second, while the EF-X20 takes at least 4 seconds, up to 10 seconds after few shots . This is expected though, given the different battery set of each ( 4AA vs 2AAA) . May I (politely) ask why the EF-42 is slow for you ? What are your settings ? Btw : I own EF-42, EF-X20 and Meike MK320 . All of them have pros and cons.
  4. sometimes the contacts are dirty . It there isn't communication set with che camera body, the flash won't fire. Try cleaning the contacts brushing them on a cloth, then push the flash firmly in the hot shoe. It might be easy to fix :-)
  5. it happened some times, until I changed Focus Area : from "single point" to : ZONE . Single point gives 273 focus points, while Zone gives only 77 , but for some reason Zone focus point seems more reliable in nailing the right focus. At least for me.
  6. Yes, I think so. Start Adobe Bridge, open 1 Raf picture, go to the 8th settings page ( there is a camera as an icon ). It's "camera calibration" . Into "camera profile" set Astia/Soft or another fuji profile. Then "save camera raw defaults" . To me, it works . Next time you open bridge, you should see the thumbnails greyish, then after a second or so, the fuji profile is applied and the thunbnails get a much nicer color.
  7. Old bug ? It's new for me ! It didn't exist before the 4th february firmware. Moreover ... why it's not recomended to shoot Raw only ? I do it all the times, because I use NeatImage to process noise. Both the Fuji Jpg and the Camera Raw processing are not not up to my expectations. What's wrong with Raw only ?
  8. since the new 4.0 firmware the red-eye preflash setting works differently. In practice with the following settings the pre-flash cannot be avoided : 1 Raw only 2 face detection ON 3 Eye detection OFF 4 AF-Continous But : if I set Raw+Jpg , then the red eye reduction can be avoided. I don't see the sense of this Fuji choice. According to the new manual it should be the other way round ( red-ey reduction disabled when Raw only) Anyway it wasn't like this before the new firmware came out. Can anybody confirm this behaviour , or maybe suggest a solution ? TIA
  9. I can think an easy way to fool Reuters and such. 1 - shoot RAF + JPG 2 - process RAF the way you like 3 - copy back all exifs taken from the out-of-camera Jpg to the newly processed version. 4 - you can even change the file date/time to the original shot date/time. ( Exiftools can do every sort of things , and more ) I challenge everybody to spot an image made this way as being processed by Camera Raw.
  10. If you disable Noise Reduction in LR, you won't see that nasty watercolor effect. Apparently LR confuses fine foliage with noise, and tries to fix it. In my opinion LR is seriously flawed in its NR processing, because it doesn't take into account the ISO speed. In fact, fine speckles at Iso 200 should never be considered noise, while similar speckles at Iso 6400, are noise for sure !
