  1. Hello! I got the 23/2 today and wrote my first impressions of it on my blog, along with some general focal length musing preamble: http://blog.andyf.me/fuji-23mm-f2-first-impressions/ In summary: it's a really nice size and weight, aperture feels good to use, focuses quickly and quietly, and the images it produces are nice – tack sharp everywhere but the extreme edges, unobtrusive bokeh, no distortion, and good flare resistance.
  2. It's probably big for the same reason the Zeiss Otus and Sigma Art lenses are big: quality. Compare these three 50mm (ish) f/1.4 lenses (Nikon G, Sigma Art and Zeiss Otus): (image from here)
  3. How would this be different to the existing shadow+highlight settings?
  4. Need some kind of indication that AF lock is enabled. Should be able to move focus point while exposure is locked. Agree with the RGB histogram comments, and also the comments about the histogram having unclear boundaries. Turning "Preview Pic Effect" off should not affect the histogram, or at least should not make the histogram behave as if the camera is set to DR400. When set to store raw in slot 1 and JPEG in slot 2, deleting the raw doesn't automatically delete the JPEG. It'd be nice if there was an option to enable this. Auto ISO could do with a "focal length multiplier" option, maybe 0.5×, 1× and 1.5× for example. Camera should remember when self-timer is enabled after power off, or at least it should be an option.
  5. It doesn't have lower distortion. I get what you're trying to say, but the 'lower distortion' is purely a result of you standing further away with the 55–200 than with the 35.
  6. Spending money on your hobby is only a waste of money if you feel it is. If you honestly believe you got your money's worth, nobody else can legitimately say it was a waste. The whole point of a hobby is to make you happy, to be an outlet for whatever urges you have. It's a deeply personal thing. As a related example, take mechanical watches. I love them, I have a modest collection of low-to-mid-range ones and don't at all see them as a waste of money, but I can well understand how someone with no interest in such things would see it that way.
  7. The f/2 is the lens I've been waiting years for. I don't care if image quality is slightly inferior to f/1.4, or that it doesn't let as much light in, I place higher priority on small size and weight, and fast focus.
  8. Couple of things: I've found that you need to adjust the Highlight and Shadow sliders quite a bit in order to get the tones looking similar, depending on how you've set your Highlight and Shadow Tone in-camera. You might also want to try setting the Curve (in Base Characteristics) to Film Extra Shadow then using the Curves tool to modify contrast a bit. Second, by default I don't think C1 applies Light Falloff correction, so you'll have more vignetting than you see in the JPEGs.
  9. Possibly related to how you set the camera for JPEGs – the colours in JPEGs are different depending on whether you’ve got the camera set to sRGB or Adobe RGB. As for the profiles, oh man they’re exactly what I’ve been looking for. I use them (primarily Acros (even though it's for XPro2) and Astia) with my XE1 and they’re just lovely. They don’t match the JPEGs *perfectly* but imo I think they’re an improvement (reds don’t go a weird pink colour any more), and of course you get all the extra control over the tone curve, sharpening etc. from using raw. Really good job!
  10. Nobody's crying, don't be ridiculous. Someone asked what your reasoning is behind wanting no touchscreen, and all you can offer is "I don't want it/I can't think of a use for it so nobody should have it." That's not reasonable.
  11. That’s not an argument against Fuji including a touch-screen though. Like others have said, if the XT2 does have a touchscreen, it will have literally no negative impact on people who don’t want to use it. They can just ignore it entirely. The only argument I can see against Fuji including touch-screens on cameras is that it might somehow mean they make design decisions that end up with core functionality controlled by the screen and not by buttons/dials. In other words, a slippery slope fallacy. And if you’re upset about ‘paying’ for a feature you don’t use, then uh, don’t be selfish? The camera isn't designed specifically for you. I personally don’t ever use the hotshoe on my cameras, but I realise that other people do and don’t begrudge Fuji putting one there.
  12. "The Minolta Dimage A1 A mount DSLR from 2003: notice it has a badge saying AS Anti-Shake, later renamed Super SteadyShot by Minolta before Sony dropped the "super" bit. That's IBIS!" The Dimage A1 is not an A-mount camera. It has a 2/3" sensor – look at the focal length of the non-removable lens: 7.2–50.8mm
  13. Hmm, just under £300 in the UK at that price, so maybe a bit cheaper for 'real'? Still, that's an ok price I guess, and if the focus speed is improved much over my 1.4 I might just sell my 1.4 and get the new lens. If it weighs less than the 1.4, even better, although physical length doesn't look to be that much different.
