Creating Lossless ACROS Files
frod replied to Mr. Vinyl's topic in Fuji X-Pro 1 / Fuji X-Pro 2 / Fuji X-Pro 3
I find the idea that a fine jpg is undesirable due to lossy compression frankly ludicrous. Please let's not fall into the audiophile nonsense trap.- 39 replies

Complete Overview over the available and upcoming Fuji X-Mount lenses
frod replied to quincy's topic in Fuji X Lenses
All the Fuji lenses are corrected to some extent, if only for vignetting. Read technical reviews on lenstip.com or photozone.de to see which ones have more done to them than others. -
As ever, there is a tradeoff between size and quality. It's not really a lens for landscapes, but then surely if you're doing that properly then size isn't really a huge consideration. I like it a lot for street photography and also group portraits, as long as you're mindful of distortion. I guess it just depends if you value sharpness over utility, for me it handles well, the aperture ring and viewing angle makes it preferable to the 27mm for when I need a small, discrete option and finally, sharpness is just not a panacea for me. Sometimes I don't want to count bricks or pores!

They can all focus faster than me so I'm happy, apart from with the 60mm, which often neglected to focus at all despite giving me the green box confirmation. If you need to focus quicker than a quarter of a second... you've bought into the wrong system.
-
Bokeh looks quite messy. Transition to out of focus areas is quite ugly, too. I can't imagine being comfortable using this lens for anything given more capable alternatives. Out of interest, at what aperture does it stop gathering more light? Allegedly light gathering ceases at around f/1.1.

I'm impressed that you've been able to fully form opinions on the entire range, it would take me years and years to do that. It's a little confusing that you'd have 13 lenses though. Surely you can't need that many? What kind of photography requires that?

There is a definite compositional advantage from having the frameline in the OVF and being able to see outside the image, despite its inaccuracy. It's like the advantage of 'seeing' that a zoom can give you without the laziness trap. How many people using primes only 'zoom with their feet' into the frame otherwise? I also quite like the OVF framing inaccuracy for scenes; it adds a last minute 'zag' to my images that often comes as a welcome surprise. I think this is also why I prefer the 23&56 to the 18&35. More out-of-frame in the viewfinder.

Exactly like that!

Swapped out my faulty 60mm (dodgy aperture ring contacts) for the 56mm. In use, it seems an absolute night and day difference. The 56mm focuses just like the 23mm. The overall handling (besides the focus clutch of course) is very similar. On my x-e2 and x-Pro1 the 60mm wouldn't even do what I would call 'hunting', it often gave up before it got anywhere near the correct focus, and this was including on firmware 4 with the automatic macro stuff. I'm not going to miss that lens at all.

Well, it took 13 days from dropoff at my store to collection but it's developed the same fault almost immediately. Not really very impressed with the lens anyway.

Travelling Combo X-T1 and Two Lenses (But Which Ones??)
frod replied to bhamx2's topic in Fuji X Lenses
My other concern in that case would be weight. Some of the zooms (especially the WR ones) can get pretty heavy over a longer period. Last thing I'd want on holiday is my carry to be laborious. Swap the 35mm for the F/2 for the WR and look at the 16? I don't really feel that reach is important or worth the weight in such an open country. -
Travelling Combo X-T1 and Two Lenses (But Which Ones??)
frod replied to bhamx2's topic in Fuji X Lenses
I would keep what you have (including the x-e1) and spend the money during the trip on experiences instead. The gains for sight-seeing / record photography from the gear you have to the newer stuff is likely to mean very little to your end results. The missed opportunities to do stuff you might not otherwise be able to do are priceless. Not to mention that learning a new camera and lenses takes more time than you'd expect. -

X-E2 or X-Pro1?
frod replied to Marcin Petruszka's topic in Fuji X-E4 / Fuji X-E3 / Fuji X-E1 / Fuji X-E2 / Fuji X-E2s
I happen to use both these cameras. The X-E2 is technically superior but I still prefer to carry the X-Pro1. I frame with the EVF and then flick to the OVF if I really need to time a shot. Personally speaking I plan to replace my X-E2 with the X-Pro2 once the price gets down to a sensible level. -
For the sake of one job I'd definitely stick to what I already owned. Depending on which camera you've got you might be able to use a smartphone to frame the picture using the Fuji app while the camera is backed up all the way to the wall.
-
I expect that just like the 35mm it will be smaller, cheaper but not quite as good; the f/1.4 23mm is a very well corrected lens that only measurebators can criticise.
-
So far I think the x-e3 is a sure thing.
-
For me the problem with any longer primes is that the 50-140mm is so damn good. The quality of the OIS, the detail that can be extracted from underexposing raw files and now the teleconverter(s?) is making me think I might never need to look at alternative glass; I'm going to be able to work with this thing for a long, long time.
-
That lens is notoriously soft at closer focus distances though. Not that there is really such a thing as a new formula these days; however there are levels of compromise for size, weight, distortions etc.

The Nikon D500 was announced and delayed on a similar timeframe, the reasons could be similar to what Thom Hogan suggests here: http://dslrbodies.com/newsviews/the-d500-delay-speculations.html

I live in the UK, it's grey, wet and there are not many keepers to be had, but at least it will be light in the evenings soon.
-
So to summarise it needs to be ~23mm -at least f1.4 -not as bulky as the Fuji 23mm (a 300g lens)
