I keep a plastic garbage bag packed in the camera bag. It has come in handy many times here in sunny Florida.

Had one for the X-T1.    Now have one, for one of my X-T2's.   Antique brown version.   The camera mounted with the 35mm f2 is my grab and go camera.
 
The quality of the material and workmanship is second to none.   Deliver is a little slow.  But worth the wait.

Hey,  I use both my X-T1 with the 18-55, 35, Zeiss 12 and the 55-200 for landscapes, cityscapes, etc.  I love it.  I've printed up to 24 x 18" (so far) and the results are phenomenal and I AM A PIXEL PEEPER. LOL
 
I also shoot with the Nikon D800, but "most" of the time I use the X-T1 -- even for stock images.  I then process them in LR 5.0, though I've used both Iridient Developer, and Silkypix.  But LR 5.x has really improved the process.

i do a lot of different photography and really enjoy all of them but my secret love is still landscape photography.
as a former nikon user (still using it sometimes) i wasn´t completely sure about the landscape capabilities of the xtrans sensors. i read a lot about it and wasn´t aware, until a few days ago, that many users don´t like the rendering for landscapes.
anyway i decided to buy a zeiss 12mm and adapt my 100mm filter system to it. and it works fine. let me know your experience for landscape. i´m actually using the x-e2 with xf23, zeiss touit 12mm, 55-200 & 18-55. i´m now considering a x-t1 because of tilt screen and weather sealing...

This is just one forum of many, covering just one, tiny aspect of the truly vast subject of street photography.
 
Have you looked at the other forums here, such as architecture, people at windows, kids & teenagers, street markets, loneliness / solitude, and shop windows?
 
Even with those other categories you are seeing just a tiny selection of street photography. 
 
Forums, by their nature, tend to "categorise" different subjects, and it's very easy to judge an overall subject by seeing just one, tiny part of it.
 
The "gimmicks" you refer to are real occurrences, they were not posed.
 
If you look at any of the books of photographs by Robert Doisneau, Elliott Erwitt, Gianni Berengo-Gardin, and many, many others, you will see that they were photographing those "gimmicks" 50 or 60 years ago, and those gentlemen were the pioneers of street photography.  Doisneau and Erwitt, in particular, show amazing senses of humour and irony in the work they produced from the 1950s onwards.
 
Street photography is not "heading" anywhere... it's still doing exactly what it did since Henri Cartier-Bresson started back in the 1930s, almost one hundred years ago, as you will easily see if you visit any exhibition of street photographs taken in any of the last 8 decades

There are others that will be able to tell you more about shooting such events, but a few thoughts from my side:
 
- LED lighting does not have to be dark. This market segment is slowly picking up after being pretty bad in the last years. But it brings other problems with it. Without going too much into detail, most LED powered lighting technology only emits narrow bands of color, most of them in the yellow and blue frequencies. This could lead to ugly looking images, while your eyes and your brain would work together to make it look almost normal to you.
- I guess you are not planning to buy new equipment, but I think you are good anyway. The 35 is fast, and the travelzoom has a great OIS.
- Think about a monopod. Not as big as a tripod, but still helpful for dimly lit scenarios.
- I'd set the aperture manually (+shutter speed for the real action stuff) and let the camera do the rest.

A few weeks ago I did some motocross event; I have a post about this in the Adapted Lens thread. About a third of my set I have done with a manual focus lens, a Summilux-R 50/1.4, a handful with the XF 18-55 and the rest with the XF 55-200. It was the first time I have used my X-T1 under such circumstances, and I must say I am quite happy with the results. I used to have an EOS 40D and the AF there was worse, even with an EF 70-200/2.8L.
 
I am quite eager to getting firmware v4 to see what difference it makes, because I think the camera is capable of better AF. The lenses are fast enough, it's mostly the algorithms that need tuning for better subject tracking. I do not mind some limitations, as long as they are predictable. Right now the AF behaves a bit erratic, making it a game of hit & miss.

Most places that I go and shoot other photographers look at me and my gear like what does he think he is going to get with those things. As a matter a fact my son uses my XE-2 and people are always asking is that a film camera? Ha ha he laughs and tells them what it is.
I used to used the big DSLR cameras but no need any more. I love my XT-1 XE-2, and my X100t. I use all of them for drag racing, motorcycle racing, dirt car racing, snowmobile racing, lacrosse, football you name it I shoot it. It refreshing see all of you out there doing what I am doing with awesome results. I feel alone out there shooting these events. Nobody else is using these wonderful cameras. If they only new.
