Jwctp got a reaction from RadBadTad in I think the joystick is kinda worthless
After shooting several thousands of photos using the X-T2. I realized I don't like the joystick. It's too slow. When I press the joystick to one direction, the focus point moves too slowly.

I shoot fashion/models mostly. So when the subject's head moves, I have to move the focus point to follow them. With the X-T1, I was able to mash the directional pads to move it. It was much faster than the joystick of X-T2. And no, I can't use face detect AF. I tried it, and it isn't fast enough, and it doesn't detect the face sometimes to make it useful for me.

I think Fuji needs to release a firmware update to speed up the focus point movement with the joystick.

What is everyone else's thoughts on the joystick?

But you said you'll print occasionally at 16x20. Now that fact is no longer valid? BTW, I printed 24x36 with a photo I took with the X-E1, which is only 16 megapixels. It looked amazing.

Honestly though, you can't go wrong with either camera.

It works really well. I have it tethering to a specific Capture One hot folder and Capture One picks it up fast. This is probably the best way to tether to capture one. Since Capture One now supports compressed RAWs, it's a great solution. The only problem is you can't control you camera from C1. But that's ok.

I tethered the XT-2 yesterday with LR. And it was the first time it didn't crash, bug out, or anything. It actually went very smoothly. I wonder if LR released an update or if it was just a fluke?

Great job and good model. Now you should feather the light to light the rest of her body instead just her face.

It's pretty bad. There's already been some discussions in the fujirumors site. But this means that commercial photographers, who are currently the ones who use medium format the most, will not use it. They are married to C1.

For GFX to succeed, Fuji has to hope medium format will penetrate other genres like wedding, street, and landscape. I think It has a great chance because of its price.

Seriously. I don't know what people are complaining about. Also, most web-photos are viewed at around 2 Megapixels. The X-T2, even when pixel-peeped, at ISO 6400 looks same as most APSC or even Full frame cameras. When downscaled from 24 to 2 megapixels, it should look great. And it does, based on the photos people posted here.

I'm diving in here with the original poster with both feet:

"Kind of worthless" is dead on accurate.

Not because I wish to complain, but in the hope that firmware will correct this.

Moving the AF spot from all the way from one side to the other:

    3 Seconds.

Sometimes faster (2.5), sometimes slower, 3.2, but frequently at 3 seconds. (Variations due to my hitting stop/start inaccurately)

If you photograph people 3 seconds is an ETERNITY.

For instance, photographing groups of people yesterday I frequently need to go from person to person, far left, far right, center, and so on.

    Quickly.

    Not happening ...!

Additionally, the AF point "brakes" are WORTHLESS.

Lifting your finger off of the joystick does NOT stop the AF point selection movement.

It consistently continues to move 2 or 3 boxes over, or worse (frequently) jumps to the opposite side if you tried stopping the AF point near the edge.

I attempted to track the diagonal time from say top left to bottom right, but the AF point jumps erratically and I found I couldn't time it.

Again I'm being pushed into focus and recompose, and hope that the shallow DOF stays in focus on the eyes.

For those folks who want to tell the original poster and I that it works great for you, than I'm going to say it.

    Here I go...

It works great for you....as well or better than your Nikon ### Canon MK ###, and you couldn't disagree more.

But this comment isn't directed at you.

You're right, it's not worthless. It is a good idea. But the current implementation on my X-T2 is worthless. I would love different speeds. I used to play those old FPS games back in the day, and I would set my mouse sensitive pretty high.

I agree the joystick speed is too slow. Although I would love to use the 325 focus points setting, I can't. The movement is too slow. Therefore, I have to work with the 91 focus point setting, even if sometimes this forces me to move the camera afterwards. This doesn't mean I would prefer using the D-pad. Although I could set the camera to move the focus point with the D-pad, I prefer using the joystick and configure the D-pad for other functions. But I would love Fuji gave us the possibility to move the focus point with the joystick faster.

Oh, but I almost forgot: For me the real killer feature of the X-T2 and one of the two reasons I prefer it over the X-Pro2 (the other being the tilt screen) is a silly little thing they could have done ages ago, even back with X-Pro1: USB Charging! No longer do I have battery anxiety or have to carry a extra batteries and a charger. I just carry a little USB power bank (that I have anyway for charging my phone) (it's also a flashlight...) I don't think I'll ever buy another digital camera that doesn't charge over USB.

It's an interesting idea. The model isn't too erratic so AF-S is still good. I just have to change the AF point when the model changes, or when I want to try a different composition.

Also, depending on the distance, body position, and my depth of field, the AF-C  settings won't work since it would focus on the body and not the head. But it does give me some motivation to try it out. I hope I don't get too many out of focus shots.

I think it'll be a boring upgrade, no curveballs.  They'll upgrade the sensor to X-T2's, the processor to X-Pro2's, and they'll add the joystick.

I'm not OP, but I shoot fashion as well (http://jwctp.com). The only cameras I use are the X-T1 and the X-T2. It works fine. As long as the photos look good, it doesn't matter what you use as long as you can deliver the photos the clients want.

I did use the Phase One XF-100 recently for a shoot, and I loved the files from that, but that's just overkill. I think the X-T2 is plenty good for fashion for most situations. Also, I have printed out 24x36 prints and 16x24. They both looked great.

I mentioned moire in the other thread, but yeah on my e-comm stuff, I see moire a lot. I'm not sure why I don't see them in my editorial stuff, maybe because the shoot isn't as clinical as my product shots.

I shoot line sheets and e-comm fashion stuff. I see moire all the freaking time with the camera. Is it more than other cameras? I have no clue since I haven't used other cameras. But you cannot escape moire, even with the X-Trans color array.

Since GFX has no PDAF points, I would love to have the Contrast AF to be at least as fast as X-T1's. Or at least it cannot have that crappy AF that the original X100 had.

Since Fuji is taking their time coming out with tethering, I'm hoping it's a lot better than X-T1s.

Having Capture One tether support would be amazing. Being able to the live view on screen would be cool too.

The biggest feature they need is tethering and saving to SD card at same time. X-T1 didn't have that basic feature. I was backing up to card on the computer by hand.

I pray every day for tethering abilities. Preferably thru Capture One. I do believe there is hope for more tethering capabilities in the near future. I noticed with Fuji's latest videos for the GFX that images were being view with Capture One. Now hopefully this means we can see this in the very near future. LR tethering for xt1 was slow and I didn't like having to pay for it.
