Little late here to your testing party.

Cameras are getting more complex. Fuji installed a whole new menu system. If for example just the menu system had 4 selections, you would have to test 24 combinations (factorial of 4).

Now lets just up that to 10 selections possible on the menu system. Now you have 3,628,800 combinations to test (factorial of 10).

Now we all know there are more than 10 options in the menu and we all know the camera has a lot more things besides the menu to test various combinations involving hardware and software. It's a complex animal.

I say we should appreciate the work FUJI does and appreciate what's involved in testing every possibility.

I'm not saying there are no problems. Just saying it's not easy to put out a camera without faults. It's easy to be critical and for some it's a way of life to be critical.

You know a lot of PRO 2 owners it seems. My PRO 2 seems to be an exception  in that it works great.

I found the A7rII (no idea why it didn't show up in the dynamic range database this morning, or maybe I missed it), and, as Ektachrome said, it is a SPECTACULAR performer (as it should be - it's a much larger sensor of the same generation). Like the X-Pro 2, it has the high microcontrast and detail preservation - but it's 42 MP and full-frame on top of that.

I am convinced, however, that the X-Pro 2 IS the class leader for APS-C (for $1700, it had better be), and is beating 24 MP full-frame in some areas of the image. The gray box they start you out on is a little deceiving - you get X-Pro2 and D7200 side by side, and the Fuji's grain stands out a little more, while its color looks quite a bit better. than the Nikon's (which has a slight magenta cast). Now move around the test chart, and in areas with more detail, the Fuji begins to pull away.

Substitute a D750 for the D7200 and it's very, VERY close, with the Fuji giving a slightly more color neutral, detailed and microcontrasty rendering at the cost of a bit of noise.  Even a D810 doesn't have the microcontrast or neutrality, although it does certainly have more detail (as it should). Only once you put in the A7rII is it a CLEAR win for the Sony in every area.  There is absolutely NO question once the A7rII is in there - nothing can touch it. (which every review has said - that is one spectacular sensor)!!!

I'd rather shoot the Fuji, with its huge selection of great lenses, best around controls and experience, BUT if you're at a focal length where the right lens exists for FE-mount, are willing to carry the lens, and use the kind of technique necessary to take full advantage of 42 MP, yet again, NOTHING short of a Phase beats an A7rII used right.

What an interesting race it's become in mirrorless! Fuji's building great cameras and lenses that are photographer-friendly and a joy to use, and their image quality has just reached very close to the top. Sony is building cameras with a few more annoyances (mostly related to lens selection and build quality) with unbelievable image quality at the VERY top (and some beginner cameras with, in my mind, odd design choices). Olympus and Panasonic are clearly hobbled by their sensor, but they are innovating in video, build and image stabilization.  Welcome, Canon (if the stories are true)!

Results look great and I'm encouraged that my pre-order Jan 15th for the PRO2 was a good decision.

I still think this PRO 2 may be more than I will ever need, so the focusing speed better be much improved. I don't want to upgrade again just for that.

Thanks to all the great material on the X-Pro 2, including a ton of early reviews, I ordered mine from a favorite local dealer yesterday, and I can't wait to see what a weather-resistant, ultra-low noise 24 MP "rangefinder" with great dynamic range does in the field, especially with Fujinons on the front of it! It'll probably be the camera that hikes the Appalachian Trail with me (all 2189 miles of it) in the summer of 2017. It's been fun speculating and reading about the X-Pro 2 for a few rainy weeks in the middle of winter with the university closed, but the REAL fun with the X-Pro 2 will be shooting thousands of images with it as I pursue my doctorate studying how we interact with the wild (including artistic inspiration as a major part of my research).

Since I do some video as well, I'm also interested in the X-T2, and I posted some speculation on that topic over in the X-T2 thread. I won't repeat it in detail here, but I think it's going to have a lot going for it. I couldn't find actual specs about any other brand's processor speed, either in mHz and core type OR in Fuji's useful megapixels/second, but our new X-Processor Pro seems to be in at least the range of something like a D4s or a 1Dx, if not closer to the power of a D5's CPU. What does an image-quality focused RANGEFINDER need with that processor?  Half of it would have been just fine.. .My speculation(based both on the power of the X-Processor Pro and cryptic comments from Fuji folks)  is that the answer lies in the X-T2, of which I'm thinking "GH4 meets D500". Video specs at least the equal of the GH4/A7s class, with stills somewhere in the 10-14 FPS range and fancy AF. If it looks like what I think, my X-T1 (becoming a backup body the day the Pro-2 arrives in my hands) goes up for sale, and my bag contains one each X-Pro 2 and X-T2, choosing based on what I'm shooting (I won't carry both while walking thousands of miles (preferring the 10-24 over a backup body), but I may well trade cameras a few times).

As for the Sigma idea - interesting, but I tend to think unlikely. The reputation of the ART line is based on four DSLR primes in a very limited range (20, 24, 35 and 50) and a couple of odd fast zooms with limited range (18-35 f1.8 APS-C and 24-35 f2 fullframe). There is a more pedestrian 24-105 f4 zoom, a slower, less expensive 30mm prime, and three inexpensive mirrorless lenses that got thrown in ART because nobody knew where else to put them, but those aren't the lenses people talk about. The ART lenses are interesting because they fit mounts that people already have, and are often better than manufacturer equivalents (the superfast zooms are unique, but the primes aren't). Nobody would be interested if they were only for Sigma SA Mount.

Sigma has a huge problem if they want to introduce a mirrorless of their own - Fuji! The Fujinons are right up there in quality with the ART lenses, there are a LOT more of them, and Fuji loves primes (and high quality zooms) as much as Sigma does (no waiting for Canon or Nikon to update a 10 year old prime, while they release 14 versions of 18-xxx kit zooms). I think the reason Sigma hasn't ventured near the X-mount is that Fuji's own strength is too darned close to what they're trying to do.

Where Sigma could make a big impact is if they start churning out a lot of Sony E and FE mount lenses. Sony REALLY knows sensors, they sort of know bodies, but they aren't as good at lenses. B+H lists 15 Sony and Zeiss FE mount lenses (excluding Rokinon, Samyang, Bower and Lensbaby), with a LOT of focal length duplication in the 21-35mm range (because of Sony, Zeiss AF SOLD by Sony and a couple of variations of Zeiss MF). The shortest lens is 21mm  (there's a shorter Rokinon, but no quality-focused choice) and the longest is 240mm  (the long end of an indifferent travel zoom - there's a better zoom that goes to 200, and primes top out at 90). APS-C E-mount adds 20+ (again excluding Rokinon and friends), but they're largely variants on a couple of consumer zooms- (there are no less than five 18-200 f3.5-6.3s in there (two different Sonys, one in black and silver versions, plus a power zoom and a Tamron that is probably identical to one of the Sonys), and three low-end 18-55s (not counting the Zeiss 16-70), plus black and silver versions of an inexpensive 55-210. There is a single very wide-angle lens (the 10-18), but nothing longer than 210 (and the only quality-focused 200 is the FE 70-200).Yes, there are three or four really superb lenses in there, but only three or four...

Compare this to Fuji's 26 lenses (excluding Rokinon (&co.), Lensbabies and color variants). Only two are low-end XC lenses, with all the rest better than most of the Sonys. Even the 18-55 and 18-135 are a step above normal consumer zooms, and the rest are almost all superb. There are three wide angles below 20 MM equivalent (10-24, 12mm Zeiss and 14mm Fujinon), and a new lens that fills the last gap by reaching 600 mm equivalent. You can find anything except a fisheye or a T/S lens, and have a bunch of options at f1.4 or faster.

If Sigma started systematically filling in gaps in Sony's offerings, both APS-C and FE, they'd have a lot more impact than trying their own mount...

I agree. It gave a sense or feel as to what this camera is about - despite certain critical comments on this forum here. Sometimes I get the sense that being overcritical and unrealistic is cool.

My worry is more about the quality of the images the PRO 2 produces and the focusing capability. The spec numbers mean doody to me. It's real life performance.

The question in my case  will come down to:

    1. Will the images and dynamic range of the PRO 2 be as good as the E-1  and will the focusing capability be as good or better than on the T1

    2. If images are not better, should I then consider the T1. Are it's images and dynamic range better on the T1 than the E-1. I haven't seen tests on that. Obviously focusing is better on T1.

    3. Wait for T3. Highly doubtful that T3 images will be any better than PRO 2, so really no reason to wait forT3 unless one prefers that form camera.

Converting Chinese yuan of 12999 to US dollars results in $2000 price tag, does that also translate into what FUJI plans to sell it for in the US ?

I'd say that is a bit steep. The PRO 2 may be too rich for my taste.

You are talking about the two X PRO 2 versions rumor I assume. One APS-C version and one APS-X version. It's from a new source and unknown if source is reliable.

It would be interesting if it turns out to be true. I think I would go for the APS-X model if tests & reviews come out positive.

There is the element of "at what cost" to incorporate video in a camera.
Does it make the camera MORE expensive by adding video capability ?
Does it compromise or weaken the capabilities of the other featuresd of the camera in order to suppport video ?

Nothing is for free. The more things a "box" does, the more things can break.

Everything is going the right way. I'm interested in four points on the XPro2: IQ, IQ, IQ and AF. As long as Fuji is focused on that, I'm happy. I expect industrie leading IQ and super fast AF in January.

Here we have a very desired camera in the FUJI X PRO 1 and people want to change it. It makes me wonder why the PRO 1 was so desireable in the first place.

There are plenty of cameras in the market to choose from that have articulated screens. There is no need to come and screw up the one camera that appeals to to those of us that don't want a "transformer like" camera.

The FUJI cameras are unique, look quite sexy, and they actually work quite well. Could be that Harrod's is just catering to more sophisticated, but not necessarily well to do clients. Wonder if they sell Leica, Nikon or any Canon ?

As to needing to use a camera. Who really needs to use a camera other than professional photographers. Of course that eliminates hobbyist, family snap shooters etc. whoe don't really NEED to use a camera but do for personal reasons.

Me personally - I'm retired and live on a fixed income. I am trying to get the cash for the PRO 2 together. I don't need the PRO 2, but if it delivers the goods, I will want it because photography is one of my hobbies. Capturing the beauty of life and nature the way I see it. It would be nice to have OVF/EVF, faster focus and greater dynamic range than my E-1.

In addition to photography, I enjoy music such as blues, certain bluegrass, country, folk, and a smattering of classical. For the music I use a a stereo system. Now I didn't realize that a hi-fi is a luxury. Didn't use to be. Of course I don't own a smart phone - can't afford the damn thing. Now there is a Luxury if ever there was one. A plain cell phone works fine - thank you.

I gotta say, I didn't know I was such an odd duck living in luxury because I enjoy the beauty of sound via music through REAL speakers.

I use the E-1, I did not mean to infer the OP get the E-1. I was suggesting he get the PRO 1.
The prices you quote for across the pond make that also a better deal.

Some time this fall (if the price is right) I hope to pick up the PRO 1 body for myself, but for right now, the E-1 is great. I just don't care for the EVF on my E-1. The OVF on my X100 is much better for my eyes and the PRO 1 has a similar OVF. The only reason I got the E-1 in the first place was to try out a FUJI glass. I got the E-1 for the price of the kit lens plus $1 here in the US. I was blown away by that kit lens. Since then, I have been building my X glass collection.
