Supposedly Sigma plans to make their 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary lens availablle in X-mount soon.  According to various reviews (eg, Dustin Abbott), the Sony E-mount version of that lens is optimized for the long end and out-performs the Canon RF lens at 400mm.
I have used the XF100-400, the Sigma 150-600C (EF+Fringer) and XF150-600 on the X-T4 and boht of the 150-600 lenses far outperform the XF100-400 at 400mm.  The Sigmas was excellent, but too heavy for me to hand-hold and sometimes struggled with autofocus. The XF150-600 is superb all around and doesn't lose much to faster lenses because it is as sharp wide open as stopped down across its entire range.

I do not have the experience of these lenses but have years of exp with EF 400 5.6 and would easily consider using it on my X-T5 with the Fringer. Sharper than most Fuji glass, exceptionally fast AF and gorgeous rendering. Great deals to be had as well.

Both! How is your comfort zone with getting close to strangers? How tight do you like the framing? I personally love the 40mm full frame perspective (27mm on Fuji crop) and believe it's a fantastic semi wide for street and environmental portraiture.

    Glad you like them.
I am too far South to get the really spectacular auroras, but the one last night was cool.

Ok, so, in my last post I said I'd avoid the field monitor.
Boy, did I forget that I had an ebay sniper set up for some already?
So, I got a ESDDI F5 monitor (5inch, fhd, can receive 4k signal). And last night there were favourable conditions for Aurora Borealis in my location.
And I am happy to report that the monitor helped me get the focus spot on! At least far better than I would have been able to.
I switch the camera to video mode (hdmi otuputs 4k in video and playback modes, fhd in photo mode), found a star, zoomed in on the focus point and then zoomed in on the display itself a few times. When the focus was reached, switched the camera back to photo and this is what I got.
I am quite happy with the result.
And, funny enough, the in-camera focus sclae was showing around 4 meters distance - waaay off the infitiny mark. Not even touching it. Had this confirmed with both 14mm and 10-24.

Amazing! Thank you! Very valuable insights. Did not know about astrophotographers using video to create an image.
I'll stay off the field monitors until I decide to get a tracking mount and play with the mask more.

I mentioned that the 4K video is tricky, a lot of folks doing planetary imaging use video feed captures and use software such as AutoStakkert, etc, to convert and stack the video into the incredible single images or short videos they show us. For them, a 4K feed like what your X-T4 has is a dream come true. They can focus with the settings they are working in, using telescope or camera lens. But they are not trying to combine it with a landscape background as you are in those aurora shots. They are also usually using a tracking mount.
The masks I mentioned can help for longer lenses if you are quick enough to get the shot, crank up the ISO and use sort shutter speeds, and quickly take the shot as fast as you can after moving the focus ring. You can relax after that while hitting the play back button to zoom into the shot to see how close you are. Speed is needed because once you get past 50mm or so, the star’s motion over the X-T4’s small pixel sites will make it seem like what should be a round star is instead sort of egg shaped which is a problem if you hesitated getting the shot.
For wider lenses, the old technique of finding the lens’ true long distance infinity focus point during the daytime, focus on something miles and miles (kilometers and kilometers) away off in the distance and mark the lens so that you can come back to that setting later at night can work well. In optics, three feet can be considered infinity when it comes to focusing, so trying for very long distances away instead of just a few hundred feet or meters works out better.

@jerryy, I am well aware of the trailing effect, no worries I use different lenses for different scenarios.
I do have a bahtinov mask as well, and while I have only tried it with a mirror-type 500mm lens, the results were not too good. My guess is that the mask I have is too coarse. But thanks for reminding that I have one, will give it a try next time the sky is clear.

Thanks for the feedback surprisingly I do not seem to have any focussing issues at all but I'll have a look at the mounting plate to see if the movement is there, as I said earlier the 'wobble' is so minute  we are talking about the thickness of a piece of  masking tape

I use the Lowepro Flipside 450, but it is more of a daysack than a proper hiking/camping bag.  It splits the body into two compartments, the lower with back access for camera gear and the upper compartment for general purpose stuff, although the divider is not sealed and can be removed, if desired, to make the bag more like a conventional rucksack.  I usually carry a small pop-up umbrella, snacks, a lightweight waterproof jacket, spare batteries, cleaning cloth and a 1m diameter folding reflector (for natural reflected sidelighting or as a shade while doing macro).
It has a front zipped area that can house a pad or small laptop that could easily hold a hydration bag of some sort, but I bring along my camera manual for light reading!!  I usually carry a water bottle or flask in one of the side mesh pockets and a travel tripod in the other side.
I wouldn't like to use it for extended camping out, though
On a recent trip abroad I used it as my walk-on flight luggage.  Having taken out the photography gear I didn't need to carry with me on the trip I used the empty spaces in the camera compartment to take spare underwear, socks, t-shirt and wash kit with me.  It was all very organised!!

Sorry, maybe I did not put it in a good way. The Godox flashes work well, that includes the TT350 and the autofocus assist. That is my answer to your first question. I can only give you my opinion but plenty of reviews on the Godox flashes say the same thing. I would suggest one of the models with Li-Ion accus (V350F is the one in similar size and power to the TT350F). That I volunteered as extra information to your question, please disregard it if you do not find it useful.
I think the Godox are better than the Nissin, in my opinion. That is the answer to your second question. I also volunteered some extra information about the remotes and about the Meike flash, please disregard also it if you do not find it useful.

ajurjans got a reaction from George_P in Sensor Cleaning
Sorry to bring up this thread, but I just have to add this.
I have cleaned many cameras and many sensors. I'll be honest, in case of Nikon D70s, I did on seevral occasions disassemble the camera from back, to gain a good access to the sensor and cleaned it to perfection.
There have, however, been two cases of complete failure. One, I massively scratched the sensor of Canon EOS 30D by dragging an obviously hard dust particle across the sensor.
And the second one, which hurts the most - while cleaning the sensor of X-E2 using the "wet" method with an "neutral" optical glass cleaning fluid, it damaged the protective glass over the sensor pretty badly.
I can now only shoot wide open.
And the repair options don't seem to be cheap; it makes more sense to just buy another E2.

ajurjans got a reaction from Chayelle in 18mm f/2 - Your experience/opinion on this lens?
I had the 18/2 for about 18 months. I just let it go yesterday (as a part of a trade-in for 10-24) and I already miss it.
Loved the size, weight and the hood - it iis perfect for walking around, as not much can really land on the lens. With the hood on I have never been in a need of cleaning a fingerprint off the lens.
This lens has been great to use on a camera when cycling or hiking. 10-24 might be better in some ways, but I know I'll get one of 18/2 before autumn for sure.

ajurjans got a reaction from Dr.Nipun in Need help buying a cheap wide angle converter lens
In the case of any lens that is used on an interchangeable lens system (not x100/x70 family, that is), the best "help buying a cheap wide angle converter" is - don't buy it.
Zoom with your feet or make a panorama. The quality with a cheap converter just will not be nowhere near good enough. I would not spend a single euro on that. So, unless the converter is given to you for free... Don't bother.
There are some high quality adapters, such as Canons macro lenses which are made from quality optical glass, but they cost a bit.

Thanks! From your words I understand that my concerns are probably real.
The trip is going to be in July, so my usual approach with lenses in the front pockets of an army-style jacket will be of no use.
Another option is just to go with any regular shoulder bag, which does not look like a camera bag, however, I hate the mess inside - lenses, gorillapod, water bottle, etc.
I am not overly concerned about my phone - my work requires me to constantly be aware of my phone and its whereabouts. Camera is my main concern this time.
I assume I would not change the lenses all the time - only for some shots and definitely not on the Ramblas
I am also planning to travel with my gf, and checking out for each other is something we always do. i also have some tricks on how to attach the camera to myself and the bag, so neither can be easily taken.
Its a good thing that an x-e2 with 18mm or 27mm attracts less attention than any canon dslr, though.
I am not sure about the gear I would be taking with me, it is still to be planned (thats why I said between 2 and 4 lenses).

Even if I know about Fuji's mentality toward their customer, it still pleases me greatly to read sentences like:
"... it’s ridiculous for us to ask customers to upgrade every two years or so."

I deeply enjoy their ideology toward their customers and their dedications. True, their camera might not have all the features other manufacturers have but they are so good at what they do it is rather hard to critique them for that.
