sir_c got a reaction from Matt Sweadner in That 35mm f1.4 magic in other Fujinon lenses?
What I especially like about my 35/1.4 is how it handles flare. The 56/1.2 is magical in its own way, but this it can't do. I can only reproduce it with some vintage lenses.
Also the gentle sharpness roll-off is what makes this lens cinematic. The 35/2 (which I do not own) may have smoother and more pleasant bokeh, but it is a different beast again.

sir_c got a reaction from Dwight in Depth of field comparison XF 56 vs XF 90
I only have the 56 and I like it a lot. The 90 does have the edge, also in sharpness. But the focal length is difficult for me. The 56 is already hard to use indoors, you get very tight shots. Just imagine the XF 90 here.
I think those kind of parameters are more important in deciding between the two than the quality of the blur or lens sharpness. The latter two are so close that you must think well of you use cases.

sir_c got a reaction from umijin in WR, how relevant is it?
I think it is a bit overrated by most people. Regular lenses can withstand some abuse pretty well is my experience.
However, if it comes in as a bonus, or for a slight extra, I'm in. It is not just protection from rain, but also from dust and sand. On windy locations around a beach, that is definitely a useful feature. But I have never abstained from shooting pictures with my kit at those same locations.

What I understood is that the original holy trinity (18/2, 35/1.4, 60/2.4) have a similar, warmer, colour balance than the newer lenses.

    Gotta love forums.

    – After a short run on highway 85, my car stopped and won't turn back on. There's a clicking noise coming from under the hood, black smoke and some flames. Just a little, I haven't tried to put them off yet. Oh, and it also leaks gasoline.
    – Oh dear, oh dear, I've been driving on highway 85 too! I hope it won't happen to me!…

sir_c got a reaction from Curiojo in Do we have any X-users using their X cameras for sports?
A few weeks ago I did some motocross event; I have a post about this in the Adapted Lens thread. About a third of my set I have done with a manual focus lens, a Summilux-R 50/1.4, a handful with the XF 18-55 and the rest with the XF 55-200. It was the first time I have used my X-T1 under such circumstances, and I must say I am quite happy with the results. I used to have an EOS 40D and the AF there was worse, even with an EF 70-200/2.8L.

I am quite eager to getting firmware v4 to see what difference it makes, because I think the camera is capable of better AF. The lenses are fast enough, it's mostly the algorithms that need tuning for better subject tracking. I do not mind some limitations, as long as they are predictable. Right now the AF behaves a bit erratic, making it a game of hit & miss.

sir_c got a reaction from Curiojo in French car owners meeting
Last weekend there was a gathering of French car owners in my town (Franse Auto Dag, aka FAD). All cars were allowed, being oldtimers, regular cars and highly tuned street racers. As long as their origin was France of course.
For me and my son it was quite a nice event to walk around and spot the gems. Below some highlights.

    Hello,

A few weeks ago I went to see some motocross event close to where I live. I have been there in the past, but this year was the first time with my X-T1. I brought along my XF18-55, the XF55-200 but also an adapted Leica Summilux-R. I have used this MF lens in the past on my Canon gear and its rendering is wonderful.

Focusing on fast moving subjects is pretty hard to do, so one has to use a different approach. Find a nice position along the track, where you can see the bikes coming. Prefocus on a piece of the track where you have possibility of a nice shot (e.g. after a hump, or in a bend). Set the f-stop to f/5.6 ~ f/11 for plenty DoF. Check the shutterspeed you get.

Longer ones give nicer motion blur, but your keeper rate will drop considerably. I try somthing between 1/125 and 1/400 depending on the speed of the bikes and curves in the track.

The whole set is on my Flickr, but the images are unsorted regarding lenses.
