Phil got a reaction from nateinc in Portraiture work, running topic
Here are some more stitched portraits.
This is what I started with, with basic exposure and colour correction, and with the detail slider cranked to 100. My Mac's dying and can't handle stitching RAWs (which is a bummer for editing the stitched file), so I batch exported them to JPGs, re-imported them into LR, merged them in PS, then sent them back to LR for final touches like vignetting, a bit of split toning to help tone the sky down, and minor stuff like cleaning up a bit of colour fringing.
Here's a single frame: DSCF0091 by Phil Babbey, on Flickr And here's the largest file I could get while still having a standard aspect ratio (4x5): DSCF0092-Edit by Phil Babbey, on Flickr And here's a square crop: DSCF0092-Edit-2 by Phil Babbey, on Flickr This is another location. I really like how this one turned out. DSCF0135-Edit by Phil Babbey, on Flickr -
Phil reacted to Wuthoqquan in Creating Lossless ACROS Files
It would be great if there was an option to have a sidecar file saved together with the RAW image, which would make it easy to replicate exactly the film simulation used in the .jpg output. But I wonder if that would be at all possible, without mentioning the reluctance of Fuji in giving out so easily the recipe to their successful film simulations.

I find the idea that a fine jpg is undesirable due to lossy compression frankly ludicrous. Please let's not fall into the audiophile nonsense trap.

Here's a portrait of my dad that I made yesterday. He works in IT at the college in my town, and is speaking at a conference this fall and needed a headshot.

I shot a friend who works in the mall at Tip Top Tailors today. The smart previews are still building in LR, but here's a SOOC JPG that I wifi'd to my phone while we were shooting. It's the regular monochrome sim with +1 highlights and shadows.
We didn't have time to find a good location, so I shot him in the changing room hallway.

Phil got a reaction from gen in Kaizen Again? Fuji X-T1 will get another Firmware update this year! (AS) - Which New Features would you like to get?
I don't know if this is possible via firmware, but I'd like to see an update to the flash system (mostly just support for the speed light's AF assist beam). HSS would be nice, and some triggers that will allow HSS, second curtain, etc.
I wouldn't mind seeing a more specific B&W film stock, too. Even punching up the contrast a bit, I find the Monochrome a bit flat and awkward. I'd love to see something like Tri-X.
Last for me, I wish you could choose to make the AF-L/Instant AF button work like the AF-On that DSLRs have. AF-S is fine as is, but I don't like how with AF-C, you have to use the shutter button for continuous focus. I find I can't shoot and keep focusing, I have to pick my finger up and re initiate focus. With back button AF, you can keep focusing and shoot when you want.

Phil reacted to milandro in X-T1 Body F/W 4.3 focus hunting
I don’t normally use continuous focus mode but yes, you are right, the camera does what you describe.
Also my 60 macro appears to be hunting more than it did before ( I hate that it is so difficult to do these things by memory Ideally one would have to have a camera updated and another camera not updated to compare!).
It performs more like before it did with firmware 4.0 .
The same slight hunting appears to be true with the same lens on the X-E2.
By increasing the size of the focussing area by one click things are better both with my 60mm and with the 18-55 at 55mm.
Mmmm! A bit puzzled there! Has the 60mm, especially, done a step back?

Phil got a reaction from CRAusmus in 23mm 1.4 decentred?
Not to bump a boring thread but I shot a brick wall, and even at 1.4 only the far corners are soft. Stopped down to f/4, there's a tiny bit of softness in the most extreme corners, but even at 100% it's hard to catch. I think the left corners may be a little softer than the right, but it's hard to even find the softness, so I'm going to go on with my life and try to forget about it. It very well could have been that way when I bought the lens.
Definitely the last time I buy internationally, though. With gear this expensive it's not worth the risk IMHO.

Phil got a reaction from darknj in 23mm 1.4 decentred?
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I'm thinking things are okay. I did a rough measurement today and it fell pretty much exactly 2ft onto a carpeted floor (with a wood subfloor). Since I was holding it before I let it go, if fell accessory door first. I didn't notice how it landed, but since the lens cap was pushed on harder, I'm hoping it absorbed some of the impact. The AF doesn't sound any different or seem any slower, and my photos from the rest of the day don't seem soft - but it was a wedding and I mostly shoot people anyway, so it's mostly centre frame.
I'll keep a close eye on it and shoot it often but try not to worry. With no external moving parts and a (more or less) pro build, it should hopefully be fine. Thankfully it wasn't the 35 1.4. I'm not normally one to obsess over little things, but money is tight and I use this lens for work, and it would be a big hit to have to get it repaired - I'm guessing it would be an expensive fix. I'll shoot it some more after work and update here if I find anything interesting.

Phil got a reaction from Kevin Buchanan Photography in Rockwell blasts XT 10
From Ken's comparison to the X-T10:
From his comparison to the X100T, literally the next thing on the page:
If there is anyone in this world that needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt, it's Ken Rockwell. His reviews are completely useless, and are only really good for a laugh when you're bored. It would be fine if he was just giving his opinion on things, but even then there's no point in reading his reviews seriously, because he contradicts himself all the time like he does here.

Phil got a reaction from DougieB in Fujifilm X-T2 rumors
With all the flagship talk, it makes me wonder... Does the X-Pro really have to be the flagship model? Can't it be part of the flagship lineup with the top X-T model?
It's not like the X-Pro is all-around better, like comparing the 1DX to the 5D. The X-T is obviously popular enough that many people prefer it over the X-Pro, and they're two completely different cameras geared towards different types of photographer.

Phil reacted to marcelo_valente in XC 50-230 any good? I'd say it is.
I went to Spain in September and took the XC 50-230mm with me. I did not use it that much, but I had a chance to take it to the Bioparc in Valencia to give it a good try. Great lens! Also, when people look at you using it, they all comment: "look at the size of that lens!" haha it does get pretty big when at 230mm.
Here are some of my favorites, and in the end the link to the album in flickr with all of the images.

Phil got a reaction from flysurfer in Fujifilm X70 Rumors
I would, even the original, but wifi is one of the most important aspects of an everyday camera for me. I use it almost every time I use my camera, even on paid jobs.

Phil got a reaction from CRAusmus in Fujifilm X70 Rumors
I agree. It makes me laugh when people complain about the size of the 50-140 and say that's not what mirrorless is about. That's the beauty of Fuji - if you don't like it, put the 55-200 on or a prime and keep it compact. When you need it bulked up for more serious jobs, you can do that without needing a second kit.
I don't know how many people feel this way, but I'm hoping they take a more entry-level approach to the X70. I'd love an X100T for personal use, but can't afford it when that money would be better spent on more work-oriented gear. If they can keep the X70 around $699 or $799 I'd do my best to pick one up as my everyday camera. An OVF accessory would give me eye-level framing but with less battery consumption than an EVF. Personally I'd prefer a 23mm lens on it, but I'll wait and see how unique the 18mm is. Let's hope it's not just the current 18mm f/2.
