To clarify, it only ruins Autofocus mode in Aperture Priority mode, which is crucial for on-the-street shots where speed is paramount. The first shot I take is quick. The second shot (or any recomps if you release a half-press then want it back) is too slow to use. It's actually not the flickering ruins it, it's the forced delay. It's mostly a problem because the full auto mode *loves* F2.0, which just doesn't cut it in daylight street shooting, which is when I really need fast reaction times.

Does it make it unusable in the most literal sense? No, because obviously pictures can be taken. Does it make it unusable in that there's a very specific, highly needed use-case where this issue makes me unable to use it? Yes.

And I'm fine with being first to test and find weaknesses for this camera, My posting here isn't to complain as much as to hope that Fuji actually reads these forums. If there is a technical need for this behavior, that's great. If not, and it's just an oversight, hopefully they fix it. What's most frustrating is people asserting that this is a solution somehow to the previous aperture chatter, which it isn't. Or that I should refrain from commenting on these issues because I chose to buy the camera early and so should keep my mouth shut about things Fuji should improve.

I have to admit that it reminds me a little of the old Leica M series I used when working overseas, they had some genuine "brassing" from use that did look different and caused people to frown but they were working cameras and did a job!

It is your camera, your money and your choice so you do with it as you see fit. There are lots out there who spend good money on a camera and then do not use it so it remains in pristine condition and I find that sad.

I must admit that now I do photography purely as a hobby I do keep my kit in good condition as I now pay for it myself and if I want an upgrade, trade in price is a big part and no matter how much we say we will not let an item go, the lust of a newer better model can sometimes win out.

Yes, I feel the same way!
And you're right; I also believe that not everyone always has to understand everything. That would be too much.

I use my cameras to take pictures. I usually take them with me. They are Commodities. Over time they get their patina automatically. I like that, it is part of the game.
What is once bought by me, usually remains until the "bitter end". I am no one who buys and sells frequently and therefore has to look at the appearance of the equipment. For example: from time to time I even also take pictures with my first cameras from the mid-80s (Yashica and Nikon). They have been quite far around the world and look therefore accordingly.
The X-Pro1 and X-T1 still also have their marks. And the X-PRO has now just gotten a little extra color, cause I like it.

But as already stated, it is really simple:
Not everyone needs to understand everything. Tastes obviously differ. But one can also simply accept other tastes/opinions, as long as they do not harm somebody. And therefore it is not necessary to discuss everything down to the last detail

I logged in just to like this legendary post! The Internet is rather scary these days!

Anyway, loving what the OP did with his/her camera, plus his/her responses to the negative comments!

Looking forward to your next look OP.

This thread has become so interesting, ironic, and kind of distressing—pun intended.

Distressed jeans. Distressed furniture. It's a design concept. It's not for everyone, and many of us, myself included, protect our camera to preserve its luster. I respect those whose view are divergent from my own, particularly if they seem peculiar or unexpected.

I like what the OPer did to his camera. I admire his chutzpah. I draw no conclusions about him, the person, from this act. I can't judge him by the appearance of one of his possessions, I can't judge a book by its cover, and I can't make an assumption of the whole individual from this narrow slice of what I know about him. It seems reasonable to not like what he did to his camera, and to act on that revulsion by choosing not to do it to your own camera, but to draw conclusions about him, to judge him, and to and sling accusations about his purpose, his outlook, his world view. . . .   That, to me, is the false veneer.

I knew a mixed heritage Caucasian/Chinese girl once who used to dye her hair black so that she looks like the rest of her school mates. No one knew she was a blonde.

We live in an imposing world. People just like to impose on others. The trick is to stop letting people impose on us and more importantly, stop imposing on others.

I think the people with negative comments are being a little unfair. It's a little silly to call it a "fraud" camera and maybe they're forgetting the spirit of the X-camera line. Many people buy X-cameras because it makes people feel a certain way or give them a feeling a nostalga in addition to it being a great photographic tool - this affects both photographers and the people around them. The looks are a big part of the X DNA, it reminds them of something from a different time.

In its price range there are other cameras arguably more capable but again, there's a reason why people buy X-cameras.

Some people might go as far as to say that people who shoot X-cameras are hipsters or wannabe film shooters.

I'd say, if you want your camera to look or appear to be vintage, then more power to you. Hell, you can spray paint it pink for all I care. It's yours and do what you wish.

    Leica declares

“ For instance, the glossy black enamel of the camera and the two lenses have been intentionally aged in homage to a well-used camera system, showing a distinctive patina  that would usually point to many years of constant use. To achieve this look, every camera and lens of the edition was ‘aged’ entirely by hand to create absolutely unique individual products."

Of course every forger says they made an “ hommage “ and not a forgery.

Fuji could have made the X-T1 look like a modern curvy DSLR, but they chose to look vintage; its a fake style that I and many others find appealing. They could have even made a modern body with marked dials. Heck, prior to the X100, curvy bodies is what Fuji was making. Its a direction that has been very successful for them, but there is nothing authentic about the retro styling and film simulations Fuji uses, but its funny the things we object to.

Your diploma analogy is not relevant because Glitch is not pretending to have earned those scratches.

I don't care if someone distress their camera, I only care if they pretend the distressing is real.

I unintentionally scratched the LCD on my X100T by throwing it on top of my 50-140 in my Pelican.  If I can only turn back time to correct my stupidity

That being said, it's his camera and his choice to do what he wants.  I like the look of a brassed camera....Leica buyers will pay a premium for a celebrity endorsed brassed camera....which is crazy to me!

    1. Clearly, you're an artist.
    2. It's yours to do with what you will.
    3. Cradling, polishing, preserving your camera is the expected, default behavior.
    4. I think it's really cool—definitely unique.

I think the notion that dents and scratches are "earned" is amusing.

I'm a big fan of worn out items, and jlmphotos is right in saying that most of our actual electronic stuff won't get used long enough to get this kind of look from use only.

I bought a second hand X-E1 which doesn't look good at all when scratched though, just boring dark grey under the scratched light grey.
I would like to see a "real color" photo of your modification if you don't mind, perhaps I could go with a black camera next time if the scratches are more aesthetically pleasant!

On the other hand, I hate scratches on some of my electronics, like laptop, smartphone, tablet.
For this old look, I go with leather cover on my phone which takes every ding and scratches, and the mix of brand new screen surrounded by worn out leather is somehow fascinating.

Anyway, to each their own, and keep the photo coming!

I think that looks great (and very well done) !
People that think they gear is like precious and cannot bear a scratch need to think again about photography.

My X-T1 has some scratches, my 18/2 lens hood is in a bad shape and cannot be removed form the lens.
But being careless about the gear is what lead you to get great pictures. If you worry about the scratches, rain, dust and other problems, you may loose a shot. Maybe you're fine with it, but I'm not

To each their own.  I'm with your dad, FujiGlitch, and would be giving you a slap on the head (even though I'm only a few years older than you).    I don't necessarily baby my equipment, but I do like keeping it look as new as possible.

To a non-Fuji owner - and someone who doesn't know what the camera really is - the beaten up looking X70 will look vintage and well used as per the intent of FujiGlitch.  So while we wouldn't be fooled, more than 99% of the public will be.  And this is a photography forum.  We take pictures that are either seen as good or not good based on a bunch of subjective factors.  Like HDR, this camera may not be to everyones taste, but what WE do isn't to everyone's taste either.

Make sure to apply multiple scratches to the lens in order to also get a nice organic vintage look on the images themselves.

I actually think it looks awesome. The OP is obviously an artist. What he does with his gear should be his business. Calling the camera a 'fraud'...really? Does that mean all the pics he takes are fraudulent images? Lol. I'm loving my x70 more every day and if I had his skills I might take a crack at personalizing mine as well. Thanks for sharing that @fujiglitch.

Writing this with a smile I thank everyone of you for their non sugar coated comments on my latest "crazy act".
Pierre comments is no surprise and understandable , my dad actually act the same way, slapping on my 40 years old head when he saw what I did.
But let me explain why I did it beside the fact that I like to do it. I'm a modeler, scale car modeler that is. Replicate the old worn out look of old cars on to 1/10 scale. When I was young I was fascinated with old cameras especially those from war photographers. So yes you're right that what I did is not real and fake but I know for sure being just a enthusiasts, my gear won't look like that even when I'm dead. So I replicated to my taste. I loved I even more now and it's a keeper.
Digital cameras comes and goes, I'm not destroying it just cosmetic enhancements, every scratch I have made is well thought and calculated.
Writing this is by no means to win Pierre or anybody over to like what I did. You don't like? Me happy Meaning there won't be any other like mine.

Here's a picture of my other hobby beside taking pictures.
Thanks for watching and feel free free to comment.
