Milandro (and Fujifilm),
Taking the next step in the integrated zoom lens range of X-10, 20, 30 cameras to an X40 model with a larger sensor, modern FW attributes, etc...would NOT put the X40 in direct completion with the X-100 or X70 for one major reason: The PSAM dial on top of the consumer range is not on the X-100/X70 range. I started with an X10. Totally loved the retracting manual zoom and fast shooting capability, but jumped to the X70 for the larger sensor and 180 flip-up screen. Turns out I have had a hard time taking low light shots, or clear fast action shots with the X70. I loved the ultra compact X70, but with only a shutter speed dial on top, I can not use it. (it requires more adjusting than just the shutter speed to get good photos.) I need that photo setting dial on top to choose my environment/ subject mode. It's often life and death for getting a good photo.
But each of those two cameras (X10, 20, 30 - X70) have elements that if combined, would cover a big gap in upper end consumer cameras, but would not tread on the X-100/X70 line. All they have to do, is increase the sensor size in an X40, include the optical viewfinder, and add the 180 flip-up screen. That way, it would be a camera with the PSAM dial on top (including the specialty modes, low light, sport action, custom, etc), which in my use is utterly necessary. I doubt they are putting in a collapsable optical zoom lens in the rumored X80. Even if they did, there still is no PSAM dial on top the camera; that end of the camera model range does not want PSAM dials anyhow.
So yes, there is a gap. I just hope they fill it soon.
