  1. Yes - I’ve had some of my favourites not get past the ‘fresh’ stage, but others I’d thought less of get through to ‘popular’. Saying that, I’m getting better at telling which ones are worth submitting and which aren’t.

    What I’ve learned:

    - my personal interests and hobbies aren’t in themselves interesting to other people.

    - what people like seems to be a strong, clear subject, a story, and some emotion depicted or implied

  2. I’d gradually update all the lenses to WR and the latest focussing if I were Fuji.

That said, I probably wouldn’t buy a new 23mm f1.4. I used to have the current one but I sold it when the 23mm f2 came out. The size, weight and focussing speed of the f2 make it a joy to use. You can slip it on your camera and forget about it, and you don’t look conspicuous or put people on their guard if you use it at social events or on the street.

  3. Two principles in this one: a triangle made by the three faces, and within the faces you have a sort of ‘odd one out’ thing going on: two human faces, with glasses, in profile, both looking at (and leading the viewer’s eye towards) a dog face, which is looking directly at the camera.

  4. Great for wildlife and sports photographers who want a well-balanced camera for big lenses that’s a little smaller than a comparable DSLR. Not so great for people who value the lightweight compactness of the XPro and XT cameras. I won’t be buying one - but I will buy the XPro3, 4, 5...

  5. I wonder if it will drop. I’m not sure the X-H1 is aimed at the same user as the X-T2. The X-T and X-Pro models are compact, light and portable. The X-H1 is bigger and heavier and a better balance with bigger lenses. I think it’s more likely to compete with DSLRs for sports and wildlife photography.

  6. 18mm f2 lens is great for hiking. It’s small, it’s light, and it is wide enough to give you fine landscapes, without being too wide for people shots/environmental portraits. WR would make it better still - maybe a new version will have it.

I went to Arctic Norway for a trip a few weeks back and used the 18mm exclusively 9d47127bc0c00450b8ecd2a18f800f47.jpegccf90bd9c6b01296b2c31a80a2b3ad82.jpg

  7. I agree too. There’s some interesting stuff happening, and some interesting-looking people, and there’s a photogenic arch in the background. In the right hands, the scene might have made a good photo.

A moment earlier, or a moment later, and the opening of the arch might have acted as a frame-within-a-frame to isolate one or more of the figures - especially if the photographer had taken a step or two to the right so that the camera was pointing directly forwards rather than angled to the right.

A step back, and the whole of the arch could have been in shot, without the incomplete edges and without the sloping edges and figures cut off at the knee caused by the upward tilt of the camera.

A page or two forwards and we could have a closer crop on the scene, with the stonework filling the frame and closer waist-up shots of the figures.

However, this is just a snapshot.

I see no skill or composition in it.

  8. It would be interesting to incorporate some sort of context element in the picture. At the moment I’m not altogether sure if I’m looking at a close-up of a drystone wall, a few inches across, or a cliff-face hundreds of feet wide, or something between the two

  9. Done. I’ve opened a new thread for people to post and discuss pictures of Lofoten. For the benefit of new readers of this thread, please do not post your pictures/discussions here: the original poster wishes it to remain a private discussion area. Thank you!
