It's more a case of glass being made for crop sensors vs glass being made for 35mm sensor. That Sigma 18-35mm is a helluva lens because it's made specifically for crop sensors. When you take a 'full frame' lens and put it on a crop sensor, every slight flaw becomes magnified. Same as if you go from a lower pixel count sensor to a much higher one.
For example, when Canon made the 24-105 L lens as the 'kit' lens for the 5D, that lens seemed great. On a 12mp full frame sensor, everything looked perfect. Below-average distortion for such a versatile zoom range and pin-sharp with no aberration.
Then the 5D Mark II came out with a 21mp sensor and the lens started to fall apart. Then people tried it on the 18mp crop sensor 7D and the lens looked even worse. The pixel pitch got so tight that every flaw became magnified by over four times. Huge colour fringing everywhere. Soft right across the frame. Out of focus areas rife with onion-ring artefacts. Now it's notorious as being one of Canon's worst lenses.

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 is an incredible lens, there is no doubt about that. Put it against any full frame lens on the same crop body and it will win. I've come very close to buying it on many occasions, I've rented it for a couple of jobs and I would rate it as, for the price, the best lens any Canon or Nikon owner can buy for a crop body. But in the sharpness stakes it does get beaten by some other lenses made specifically for crop sensors.

And, of course, we can't get it on Fuji bodies anyway

Coming from a Nikon D7000, I had a Sigma 18-35 f1.8 zoom lying around collecting dust. (If you don't know, this is widely regarded as the best zoom lens for APSC DSLRs)   So what I did was ordered a Metabones lens adapter and stuck it on my XT1!
My findings   - Sharper than the fuji 18mm f2 @ 18mm 1.8, especially at the edges - Very very close to the Fuji 35mm 1.4 when shot at 35mm 1.8 - HUGE. People thought I was using a telephoto lens. - Quite heavy. Definitely throws the XT1 off balance. - Very nice bokeh   Just a bit of fun, thought I would share   Awesome image quality, just with HUGEness, HEAVYness and MF of course.   Ask if you have questions   Some samples

that sounds like a great lens.   Take a look at the other thread here where it beats all of Nikon FF primes in the range on a cropped sensor Nikon body. Even in the corners where you would think the FF lens would have an advantage because they are using best part of the lens with the cropped area.

Zooms and 3rd parties like Sigma and Tamron have come a long way.  Too bad Fuji is not as big as Nikon or Canon to draw Sigma and Tamron. Both are doing outstanding job lately in the premium segment. Maybe even better than Fuji on lens. Hard to tell.

Seems clear to me that Fuji, Sigma and Tamron believe that the days of low end budget items are gone. The gloves have come off and they are giving it all they got in lens based on quality instead of price.

If I could have only one lens it would be the 23mm. You can use it for pretty much everything, indoors and out. But if I had just the 35mm and I were given the choice of adding either the 23mm or the 16mm to my collection, I'd choose the 16mm. Together with the 35mm, those two lenses give you a huge amount of scope and variety, whereas the 35 and the 23 have a bigger area of overlap. Outdoors, head-and-shoulders portraits etc - that's your 35. Indoors, tight spaces, close-up action, fast-moving pets, landscapes - that's your 16.

Thanks for posting this!!!!! I always was wondering if this combination will work together. But now I know! Thanks. Just have one question. You change aperture by using the ring on the metabones? So the smallest aperture will be f/7?

Hello! I'm Andrew from New Zealand. I am a web designer and was given a DSLR as a sort of gift for helping a friend with his website. I've been hooked on photography since! I picked up an x100 a year ago and it got me hooked on Fuji. Just so much fun. Later picked up and xt1 + 35 and love this combo to bits. I also now have the 18f2, 18-55, samyang 12 and an adapted sigma 18-35 from my Nikon.
