AZWolf got a reaction from jlmphotos in Capture One, DxO, X Raw Studio
This is interesting. Similar to you, I have close to 300K images cataloged in LR as I have yet to find a better database. I'm diligent about key-wording so I can find any image or shoot I need in a second or two.
I start my workflow in Photo Mechanic for a couple reasons: 1. It's super fast. 2. When key-wording and rating in PM, it writes to both the RAW and JPEG (I shoot raw+jpeg) which the LR import module does not do.
I plan to try a migration of my LR images to ON1 Photo Raw and C1 to see how they do. Based on others' experiences I sort of expect C1 to fail but in talking with ON1 I think Photo Raw should be able to handle it. The question is how it will perform once there are a few hundred thousand images cataloged. I'll post my results here once I do it.
So do you do your culling and rating in C1 along with the editing? And then move them to your "Roundtrip" folder for subsequent import/cataloging into LR?
    Thanks for the input.
    Happy shooting!

I use LR for minimal adjustments and mostly for the digital asset management.  I have over 250,000 images in LR right now.  However, I use Capture One Pro for 95% of all my editing needs.  My jpegs (from my GFX50r) are 40mb, and the TIFF's from raw are 310mb in size.  My XT files are much smaller.
I have folders set up in LR (which are actually on my desktop) where I drop files into.  Then I open C1Pro and sync that folder which I have set as a preset in C1Pro.  Once I'm done processing in C1, I export into another folder called "Roundtrip from C1Pro which is also a default in C1pro and in LR.  Back in LR, I then synch that folder and any jpegs and tiffs I generated are dropped in there.  I can then move the finished images to the library for cataloging, keywording etc.  Sounds complicated but I have it setup automatically and it works flawlessly for me.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi All,
I recently returned from presenting at the Arizona Highways photo symposium in Phoenix. One of my topics was A New Age in Raw Workflow with ON1 Photo Raw.   Based on this I just posted a review of the new 2018 version being released today (Nov 9, 2017) I also have a Fujifilm section in it. Of course the rest of the review also applies to a Fuji-X-Trans-centric workflow.   If can't wait to read the review or don't want to here's a free 30 day trial- full release version.   ON1 is also offering a bunch of freebies if you buy it or upgrade.   Hope you find the review useful!   Cheers, Joel

    Hi,
I have to agree on the IQ with the Sony. I still have my Sony and all the Zeiss glass as I haven't been able to get myself to part with it. I've logged a lot of time and exposures on the Sony and it's OK but I still prefer the X-Pro2 (ask 2 photographers, get 3 opinions ;-) I love the craftsmanship of the Leica gear but it's a tough ROI as a pro. I'm working on an article comparing Leica and Fuji directly- I will post when I finish it.

    Peter,
This is all really just a matter of individual needs and budget. If there were one camera right for everyone, we'd all have it. I recently got an X-T2 to complement my X-Pro2. On paper, the X-T2 is more desireable (4K, articulated LCD, large bright EVF, etc.) but which one do I enjoy using the most? Hands down, the X-Pro2 but that's just me and won't apply to everyone comparing the two. We could guess all day long why Fuji omitted certain feature on the XP2 but that doesn't change anything. I would just try to think about how you shoot and what you shoot and prioritize the features based on that. If, for example, you really want or need 4K video then it's a no-brainer. If OVF/rangefinder experience is important then it's a no-brainer the other way. Both are capable of fabulous images. Good luck with your decision!

    Hi All,

I thought I'd share a list of useful shortcuts and important considerations for the X-Pro2 I've compiled from personal experience and various resources (recommendations below.) As I'm new to using this forum I hope this isn't redundant and that it will save you all some time and perhaps prevent some aggravation.

Shortcuts- in order of importance and frequency of use for me but of course this will be different for each of usPush Trash button for 2 sec, then press rear command dial to bring up card formatting Rear command dial- While in AF or MF press briefly to get the magnified view. Pressing for a full second in MF mode toggles through the focus assist modes (standard, split, focus peaking.) This works whether you are in magnified view or full view. This also works for the Electronic Rangefinder (ERF) Battery life as a percentage by hitting Playback button, then up arrow OR just toggle through the displays using DISP/BACK button Press and hold DISP/BACK button until Fn customizing menu appears and you can make changesOR press and hold any of the individual Fn buttons to change the function for that button. Press the Q key to bring up the Quick menu. Now press the Q button again and hold for 2 seconds: This brings you to the set-up menu to configure your custom camera settings C1 through C7. Press and hold the Q key for 2 seconds while in shooting mode to configure the Quick menu itself. While in this mode you can navigate to any of the 16 positions (use joystick or controller keys) and select any of the 24 functions or NONE for that position (using the MENU/OK button or push in joystick.) If you don't need access to 16 positions/functions you make some of them blank using NONE to clean up your Q menu. Press and hold Menu/OK button for 3 sec to lock all 4 selector/Fn buttons and the Q button. I must admit I never use this one but have included it in case someone out there sees a viable use for it. Important but not obvious:If DR is engaged (that is set to DR200, Auto, or DR400) your minimum Auto ISO won't go below ISO 400 or ISO 800 respectively, even if you've set the minimum for 200. I leave DR off for the most part because I primarily use Raw. If you use DR-AUTO mode, the X-Pro2 will choose between DR100 or DR200 but not DR400. If Face and/or eye detect is on, you can’t lock the AF. You also cannot change metering patterns. This makes no sense at all and I was hoping Fuji would change this when they came out with the 2.0 firmware update but no such luck. Maybe if we all request it, it will happen. One workaround is to assign Face/eye detect to a Fn button so you can quickly change it if you want to us AF-L or switch to spot metering. In addition to figuring some of this out on my own I have used several other resources. A couple of these stand out and I would highly recommend them: 1. Adam Bonn's X-Pro Series Content (not to mention the rest of his blog/site as well as his many poignant posts on this forum) 2. Rico Pfirstinger's X-pert tips- right now you can get 40% off his e-book via the link pinned at the top of this (Fuji X-Pro1/X-Pro2) forum.

I've used all of them (Leica film, digital, Fuji X pro, Sony A7RII) and I've got to tell you after over a year with the Sony the 'computerness' of it has melted away and it actually feels like a better and simpler camera than the X pro ever felt to me - and professionally are in a similar situation as you. I use it mostly with Contax G lenses and the techart adapter that actually improves on the AF that the Contax G system had, though it is not flaw free it's mostly quite solid, especially with the 45 and 90, which I use most. Combine that with the superior sensor, that makes it's difference known in all of the pictures I've made that couldn't have been made with the X pro - well, I feel like the Sony design gets a bad rap because it doesn't match the nostalgia of old designs -  but in real life use - for me - it actually is quite user friendly over time, has become quite intuitive to where it will not disrupt the flow of any shoots, and the results it gives are just hard to argue with.

The Leicas are great but yea, the cost / quality equation - no practical justification these days, and the Sony still wins on IQ/resolution anyways.

    Complex and then some!
The rule of thumb that I heard was that the software decision tree started in the upper left corner and when right with sub-decisions as drop-down legs of the tree.
Since there's not enough real estate on an LCD screen (or in a viewfinder) software engineers have modified that to suit (something). And as users we have to hunt for what this new "guy" thinks is the proper location for familiar functions.
Kind of fun as mental exercise. But ay-kayrumba during the learning curve!

One of the beautiful things about Leica M is the simplicity. You do have to log more hours on the X-Pro2 to figure out what aspects to use and which to ignore mainly because it has so many more features, bells and whistles. But once you do that it can be a natural (and simple) extension of yourself. I think because I was weaned on mechanical film cameras the physical controls seem simple to me on the Fuji. So once you set it up the way you work and eliminate all the extraneous stuff it can be just as pleasureable to use as a Leica rangefinder. I know my article says that for now the Fuji XP2 is my new Leica. BUT if I end up selling my Sony system, who knows, perhaps a Leica M is in my future?

I gave On1 Raw a whirl this week, inspired 1) by Joel's review and 2) I quite like On1 Photo (sometimes) as a finishing tool

The lack of automatic lens correction is a bit shabby IMO, but the correction tool to fix it works well.

Personally I think we sometimes get a bit obsessive about sharpness... That said, of course for certain usage scenarios (eg ultra prints) it's very, very important.

FWIW I think ON1 is a good product for having a lot of useful features, and has ways of working that should suit most people's experience levels, for example it has pre-sets for a lot of edits, and of course you can still do things manually.

When you compare this to a lot of other apps, which (quite understandably) expect you to know how to use all the tools you want & make your own pre-sets, then I think this is good feature making On1 suitable for beginner and seasoned raw shooters

    IMO

We've actually had a decent suite of X-Trans editors for quite a while... Sure by most accounts ID has the edge in sharpness (see what I did there?) but also by most accounts, it's only Adobe that haven't measured up against C1/PN/ID/SP/XID/On1

So if you can break with Adobe (assuming Adobe isn't working out for you, it works for many people) then there's plenty of choices out there, all of which have pros and cons.

The 'trick' to find the app that works best for what you shoot, and the way you shoot* and the way you like to edit.

(*for example, Adobe might be the worst for X-Trans demosaicing, but it's possibly the best for post capture exposure push - so if you habitually shoot from a ISOless sensor methodology, then the slightly soft and smeary images are a small price to pay for the extra 2 stops of exp push and the fact that the colour doesn't fall apart if you push it 3 stops, like in some apps)

It doesn't apply Camera Calibration files the same way as LR but you can create (or use existing) presets to mimic various films such as Fuji Velvia. The ones that come with it right now are limited but it is my understanding that ON1 will be adding Fuji film profiles, including Acros, later this year. I hope this helps.

Your post was very useful. I like the two button format - I had not seen or read that tidbit before. Thank you.

    Cheers,
    Joel
