Mike G reacted to Murray Foote in Quick review of 80mm f2.8 macro
Of course we all know that specific cameras and lenses are far from the most important things in photography but I just got a new lens and here are some images I used it in creating. I expect it will replace my 55-200mm on my next trip.

Sharpness in this lens is adequate. In other words, it may well be the sharpest Fuji lens, as other reviews suggest and may make some other lenses seem inadequate in comparison. Mind you, if all you want to do is to post images online, it’s questionable whether you’ll see the benefits in your posted images because even a 4K monitor is only equivalent to the resolution of a 6MP sensor.

It’s a genuine 1:1 macro lens that also works well as a general lens. Autofocus works well from macro to infinity and not all macro lenses have good autofocus for macro. I had great difficulty getting focus on the petals of a white rose in low light but that’s more a product of Fuji’s contrast based autofocus than the lens.

Using it with the 1.4x teleconverter is excellent. Hardly any additional weight and quite viable wide open. No doubt better if you stop the lens down a stop or two but no need to avoid wide open.

Vignetting? Meh. Several reviews have suggested a problem with vignetting. I find it to be minimal and in any case easily correctible. (Out of focus image of clouds included).

Bokeh seems fine from my point of view.  I didn't do any artificial; testing, though.

Image stabilisation works very well. Fuji claim 5 stops and while I have not systematically tested this, the shot of Ashoka (the red Burmese cat) is at 1/15 sec.

No good for portraits because it’s too sharp? Several reviewers have suggested that but I don’t agree though I have little interest in portraits unless in the context of live music or street photography (ie unposed, not street portraits). The 90mm is no doubt more of a portrait lens but sharpness is not a problem. It is very easy in the current version of Lightroom to roughly paint the face with the Adjustment Brush, then select skin tones with the new colour range and blur accordingly.

I also have a Sigma 180mm f2.8 macro. On the Nikon D3s, that is twice the weight of the Fuji X-T2 + 80mm f2.8 macro + 1.4x TC. That is an advantage for travelling, but ironically because the Fuji is much lighter, it is much more difficult to hand hold steadily for macro focusing.

Focus stacking works well provided you use a tripod. There are three possible methods here. (1) You can use the autofocus to select different points of focus. (2) You can use the focus scale in manual focus to set different points of focus. (3) You can use focus peaking in manual to select different points of focus. I don’t recommend (1) because you are likely to miss a focus point but (2) and (3) work fine. I have included examples using both focus methods (2) and (3).

The main disadvantage for me is that hand-held focus bracketing is not possible. With the Nikon and the Sigma I could turn the focusing ring from out of focus at the back to out of focus at the front for quick focus bracketing on the fly. Usually I used a monopod but sometimes I actually hand-held. This is not possible with the Fuji alternative. This is a problem with the X-T2 rather than the lens, probably correctable in firmware.

    Attached images:

    (1)  Lichen on tree.  1/125 sec, f5.6, 200ISO, plus 1.4x TC.  Handheld.  Cropped in from the sides.

    (2)  White rose. 1/160, f14, 250ISO, plus 1.4x TC.  Handheld.  Uncropped.  The spider in the corner is sharp.

    (3)  Ashoka (red Burmese) at point blank range and 1/15 sec, f2.8, 800ISO.  Handheld.

    (4)  Small cactus.  Focus stacked.

Too late Stephen . . . . I went out and bought one (an X-H1) today . . . I remember that you led me to buy my first Fuji (an X-E1) several years ago . . . and I bought the X-H1 even without your go-ahead, but based on your review.

    Thanks

Yes, I'm rather concerned about this, Mike G. The numbers on the dealers' websites don't seem to be going down much, either. I guess you're right about the 8 -16mm probably being launched at the same time as another new camera (like the X-T3!). I hadn't thought this through, but it would fit with past patterns. (Sigh...) - decision time!

That also was my intention but noting that there seems to be a glut of X-T2s around I decided to cut and run before the glut turns into a torrent! Trusting that any new cameras may be announced at the same time as the 8-16mm f2.8! so that may not be the right time to sell or PX what will be yesterday’s model albeit a very good yesterday’s model!

Now several weeks into the X-H1:

    The Good!
This new body seems to fit my quite small male hands superbly.
The new rounded buttons are much easier to use compared to the X-T2 flat buttons.
Faster AF even using the FX 35mm 1.4, other lenses also benefit from the improved algorithm.
The improved card hatch and connector hatch are an improvement.
I perceive a small improvement in image quality.
The output equals or betters the X-T2
Also I see the LCD as being sharp as a tack.
The EVF is great the detail is super.
The menus are familiar but encompass the new facilities.
The whole experience of the camera seems slicker and quicker.
An almost silent shutter noise is very good.
The X-H1 in my eyes is an evolution of the X-T2, which in my mind is better than a revolution.
The body feels a lot more robust, time will tell if the finish is as equally robust?
Of course all your lenses and most bits fit.
    IBIS because it doesn’t intrude.

    Not so good.
The extra 5 ozs of weight.
    Battery life.
Apparent feature of the normal mode LCD & EVF where the refresh rate slows down.(I think this is a bug and not a feature)
    Boot up a tad slower.

According to my list the pros outweigh the cons by a fair margin. Another reassuring feature is that Fuji will tweak and improve the camera in the same way that they have done to their other photo products!

Old thread I know but something I have found with the 35mm F1.4 is more than any other Fuji lens it really rewards the mash the shutter button technique, (remember to set to focus priority in sub menu), if you half press it hunts and then by the time you have hit the shutter things have moved, If you just mash shutter in S_AF soon as it acquires focus it fires and I have found accuracy is actually better with this method. Interestingly as well on the X-H1 you get even more keepers with this method as the feather shutter introduces less of the jaring inherent in this technique and also has IBIS to further steady the ship. Oh and the 35mm is faster on the X-h1 anyway thanks to new AF algo's (coming to all the 3rd gen bodies in May.

Its good times to be a Fuji user, especially when my first ever lens I bought in the system after the kit (5 Years ago), is still getting better thanks to firmware updates in the bodies.

Laurel, you do not say what lenses you have? There is no specific camera setting for macro photography. Fuji’s extension tubes are very good but expensive. Don’t dismiss them that would be an easier way to adapt almost any lens to be able you to get a bit closer.
Another way to get closer is a telephoto lens but not ideal.

It’s very hard work being a cat and Dave is having a quick nap!

Thankfully Dave’s injury is well on the way to healing, fur is growing back nicely and it is now quite difficult to see where the injury was, my neighbour Julie tells me he’s now very nervous of white vans, so we’re thinking he was hit by such a white van.
Funnily he always seems to take his naps at the same spot!

Mike G reacted to BobJ in Problems, but Kudos to UK Fujifilm service department
I thought I should give the Fujifilm service in the UK a pat on the back. I have had three experiences with them, all positive. My X-T1 developed a flash fault. It was repaired under warranty. They had to replace the main circuit board. It was done very quickly (I can't rember exactly how long it took.). Then I had a problem with a huge piece of 'dust' on the inside of the rear element of my 10-24mm. I am pretty sure it was a piece of glue that had come loose. This was the only lens that I bought as a grey import, so I had to pay for the repair - be warned. Neither of these faults should have happened in the first place though. Most recently I lost the eyepiece cup on my then brand new X-T2. I was caught in a storm at Durness and I probably caught it on a divider in the backpack as I hurriedly put it away. I couldn't find a source for a replacement so I called Fuji service. They sent me one by return of post for free! By the way, the weather sealing of the X-T2 works very well!

Well it seems there is a simple answer to this problem. You have to upload a copy of the receipt for your items. I was uploading files that were too big in size. Once i uploaded pdf's of around 200kb the system works. Why they don't tell you there is a maximum......
