I recently received a Canon FD 300mm f4 L lens (1979) and I did a few tests today with my X-T1. Unfortunately the light was really bad... I hope it will be better next time.

I'm thinking of selling my excellent 18-55 f/2.8-4. I don't know, I like the idea of only having primes, more fun IMO.

A lot of times I use the 18-55 @ 18 for landscape amuway, and the new 18 f/2 will probably be sharper, but mostly I will use the 18 in tight spaces indoors (like I did before) and when i want my camera to be as small as possible.

I think you'll like it. I use lots of FD lenses on my Fuji and my leica m240. The 1.4 is fantastic.

Be prepared to buy at least 2 copies of the helios. Also pick up a spanner wrench which can be used to take many vintage lenses apart and clean the lens elements.

If you open directly the X-Transformer app and convert a file, the result will be a DNG. But if you launch X-Transformer from Lightroom (configured as an external editor), the result will be a TIFF. But the result and size are the same.

    I know!

And yesterday I have found this review: https://phillipreeve.net/blog/canon-fd-300mm-4-l-review/

I really want to get the Fuji 100-400 in the future (maybe late this year or early next year) to shoot wild life. This 300mm f4 lens could be a really good option too. Sure there is no AF or stabilization, but for the kind of animals I like to shoot (moose, fox, deer, bears), I think it could work great, using a monopod. For small birds in flight, it's a different story, but it's not my goal.

It all depends on what you are looking for.

    1) The subject separation you only can have with a f1.2 aperture (limits your choice)
    2) A good, fast 50 (of which there are plenty)

I have quite a collection of vintage 50ish lenses and this is my quick take on (some of) them :

Takumars (M42) - I don't really like the bokeh, can be quite nervous, blooming highlights and softness wide open, low contrast. Handling is excellent with both, I thought they were pretty smooth until I tried the Minoltas. Anyway, the 50/1.4 is better than the 55/1.8 IMO, but more expensive of course.

Minoltas - I LOVE the 45/2 (cheap, tiny, unique look and smooth focus), the 50/1.7 is even smoother (the smoothest focus ever!) and sharp!, the 55/1.7 unfortunately is in pieces at the moment, but should be similar to the 50/1.7 in sharpness and handling. Same bloom and slight softness when wide open, but different "look" that I like.

Canons - nifty fifty 50/1.8 II- wouldn't recommend it, even though I loved it on my Canons, the reason being the electronic aperture, which forces you to either shoot it wide open (or whatever aperture it was last at) or buy an adapter with a built-in aperture ring. The FL 55/1.2 - exquisite! My poor man's 56/1.2 (paid about $100). A lot of glass - a bit heavy. Focus ring is (on my specimen) too stiff for it to be comfortable. Perhaps re-lubing it will help? Doesn't look too big on the camera since the FD adapter is shorter than the Minolta/M42 adapters, which I quite like. Lovely colors and bokeh, but same problem with highlight bloom and slight softness wide open. Razor sharp from f2.8 onwards.

Helios 44M - This used to be on my Canon all the time. For some reason, I just don't find it compelling with X-Trans. Don't know why. Also a bit of a long throw and heavy focus ring. Fun bokeh though, sharp, low contrast. Max.aperture of f2 might not be that fast.

Pentax-A 50/1.7 - Also sharp etc. Virtually indistinguishable from the Minolta, was my favourite until I got the Minolta (as you might have noticed, I am a Minolta fan). Different colours.

I would recommend either the Minolta MC Rokkor PF 50 f1.7 (cheap, razor-sharp and ultra-smooth handling) or a Canon FD/FL 55 1.2. A Minolta 58/1.2 would probably also be great. The MD Minoltas should be similar, but more plasticky than the MC generation.

sebas1430 got a reaction from webpublius in Which compact TTL flash would you buy
    Hi,

Long term speaking, I will probably get 2 Cactus RF-60 with Cactus trigger to build an easy to use and portable studio kit, but now, I'm searching for a compact TTL flash that I would bring with me almost everytime, combined with the ultra compact FlashQ triggers for off camera situation.

I almost ordered the Meike MK-320 this week, but I noticed that the head can't turn 180 degres.... something I like, especially to be able to bounce the light where I want when using on camera flash. I know some people are using this flash on this forum....do you see an issue with this?

I was also looking at Nissin i40, but since we can't do firmware update by our own, it's more subject to stop working (I mean some features) when Fuji is realsing a new body or new firmware. Also, I'm in Canada and it seems difficult to find support for this brand....and it's about 400$ CAD...not cheap.

Finally, there is also the upcoming Metz M400 that looks promising. It will cost about the same as the Nissin, but at least, we can do firmware update, and they mention that it will support HSS for Fuji...

Is there any other option I'm missing? Which one would you buy? At less than 100$ CAD, the Meike sounds like a no brainer compact and light flash, but if I don't like it, it's worth nothing...

Note: I own a X-T1 and plans to update to X-T2 this winter...

    Thanks
