The e-series hasn't had an anti-aliasing filter from the first x-e1; after all, the whole selling point of the x-trans sensors was the lack of a need for such.

Personally, I prefer the look of the x-trans i images over the x-trans ii, so that would be the x-e1 or the x-pro1. You'd have to accept (and/or enjoy) the slower shooting experience, though.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the E4 and T3 have identical sensors and processors?

This is standard behaviour for many zoom lenses: when you zoom in, the minimum possible aperture increases. This is a physical limitation of the lens' construction, that's why it says F2.8-4.0 and not F2.8 in the product name.

The "Digital Split Image" focus assist (as implemented on fuji's cameras) requires a display, so in pure OVF it is not possible to use it. However, on the x-pro2 you can also add a little display in the lower right corner of the viewfinder: set it to "ERF mode" : http://fujifilm-dsc.com/en/manual/x-pro2/first_step/monitor/index.html#viewfinder_selector
You should then be able to have the split image on the little EVF, with the rest of the viewfinder still in optical.

Best bet seems to be getting a broken one (with a different defect) to scavenge.

Without having the camera in hand, its hard to judge how well it works, but imo the fujifilm engineers did something which was much needed: prune away some buttons. Especially with the e3 being smaller and the joystick added, all those buttons are starting to clutter up the back of the camera. Viewed in that light, the touch screen is not a trendy feature, but a replacement to still be able to use the extra functionality those buttons enabled (essentially, moving the buttons into the screen). Just because it is `trendy', it doesn't mean that this solution is bad.

Seeing this, I am wondering: couldn't one take an external battery, say a 26800mAh one, and connect it through usb to power the camera during shooting?

Of course, this is not a proper solution if you regularly need long battery life, but maybe it could be a good stopgap measure - it should, roughly, last at least as long as about 10 of the internal batteries.

More serious answer: you're probably just unlucky enough that your hand naturally presses the button in question when holding the camera. Using a thumb grip may solve your problem.

To me it looks like there's some bad jpeg compression exasperating things, which is very strange given that the image is 1.4MB.

Hardly surprising, especially the first shot where, probably, even a midrange smartphone camera could have done the job.

The question is, of course, how often one gets to use the camera in those ideal circumstances.

No complaints here on build quality and menu-logic in my x-pro1.

I will get into situations the camera's automation cannot handle. What I like in fuji's cameras is that, so far, in every such case I can understand what is going wrong and quickly take control of the camera to correct this (or just take control before the camera gets a chance to get it wrong )

For example, in your shot I would have immediately used back-button focus/manual focus with focus peaking, spot metering with manual placement of the focus spot. Probably use automatic settings for shutter speed and iso at the first try and use the manual controls if it didn't immediately expose properly.

Looks to me like you were using the electronic shutter, combined with the frequency of the fluorescent light this results in only parts of the photo getting illuminated by the lights. You may prevent this either by using  lower shutter speed (<60) or the mechanical shutter.

What's the point of having the camera damaged if you can't have a genuine story, of dropping it with appropriate near-heart-attack, attached?

It is a non-issue only if you aren't affected by it. I don't really mind the current settings, but I see no downside to having this camera behaviour customisable. In fact I would like to have the option of setting different viewfinder-lcd behaviours for the Q-menu and the normal menu. This would be a fine upgrade to add to the next firmware update

Using an x-pro1, but I imagine the sensor is close enough to the x-t10's  for these comments to be valid:

    1) If it is just the concern of form factor and quality then no worries; fuji is fine. The only thing which I would be concerned about is whether you'll get proper support and no inflated prices due to everyone selling the other camera brands and being unfamiliar with fuji.

    2) The lack of ibis is not really a problem, but, if you also have a non-ois lens, you have to take care to set the minimum shutter speed properly!

    7) Voigtlaender nokton 40mm with fuji adapter, Asahi takumar 105mm with K&F concept adapter. Delicious .
