Timelapse

Recommended Posts

I finally realized that the X-T1 had an interval shooting timer built in so yesterday I went out and made a few clips - processed in Bridge/Photoshop.  I'm by no means a seasoned timelapser - really just have messed around in the past and done short clips as an add on to jobs here and there.

Camera had no problem with 2sec. interval raw capture - never hiccuped using a 95MB/s Sandisk card.  I switched over to jpeg (Chrome) after the first clip to save myself disk space and time on the computer.

In the past I've always used manual lenses for time lapse stuff so I kind of forgot about potential exposure/aperture issues with modern lens designs.

23mm did a fine job - very consistent exposures throughout.

18-55mm - not so much.  Exposure "flicker" is apparent.  Sure, it can be fixed with software, but that's a step I wouldn't mind avoiding.

I haven't tried the 14mm or 55-200mm yet (that's it for Fuji glass in my bag for now) but my hypothesis is that having a real aperture ring is beneficial.  In that case, the 14mm would be good, 55-200mm bad.  I'll probably test it out today.

Anyone have experience with some of the other X lenses?

I use most of my primes for shooting timelaps - it is a nice cam to shoot TL with with simple strait forward UI.

I am regularly shooting time lapse images for my wedding day films - the flicker you refer to is caused by the aperture closing down for every shot, and this aperture being very slightly different each time. It's not common but I must admit I haven't used the 18-55mm for this purpose. As you are obviously aware best results will always be achieved with a manual lens where there is no change between the aperture etc. on every shot. I've had similar issues (albeit not as pronounced) on Canon, but never realised until I was asked about it on a stop-motion discussion forum. Those guys know their shit. I've noticed if I have the exposure preview (can't remember the exact name of the feature and don't have my XT-1 handy) on flicker essentially goes away since the aperture is fixed at that point instead of stopping down for each shot.

Kaladin, thanks, I'm pretty sure exposure preview was enabled as I only turn it off when shooting with strobes.  Worthy of a double-check, though.

Antony, thanks for the link.  Nice wedding video, too!  I haven't seen too many people doing timelapses like yours for weddings.  Well done!

Mart46, the clips are at 24 fps so from around 200 to 750 for the three posted.

Remeife, I like the UI, too.  A bit quicker/easier to work with than the Nikon D800 + D750.

I have a F-mount adaptor to use all my Nikkor and Zeiss ZF lenses, and probably will in the future, but it really would have been nice if the 18-55 was more consistent.  Maybe the 16-55 is in my future after all.  I'm off to the beach for a week - hopefully I'll find the time to see how the 55-200 performs.

    • Looking more like the next Fuji camera we see will be an X-T50 but it is still a rumor and no specs have been published.
    • Hey guys, The shutter on/off button switch may be loose on mine. After turning camera on and pressing the shutter/holding close to the area, the camera will turn off and say 'sensor cleaning'. This doesn't happen if I'm shooting via touch screen at all. Everything else is functional. Anyone else experience this before? Would love a much cheaper fix since Fuji Canada just quoted me $700 CAD to fix it, and considering everything else is functional except that part I'm not even sure why MPMB Main Board parts is being replaced😕 I got no explanation from them either.
    • As far as I know the firmware is not country specific. Are you sure that the filename has not been changed ( I am told this can happen with mac os). That's the only thing I can think of.
    • My x-t5 does not exhibit the focusing switch behaviour as you report it, so that is very strange and indicative of a fault. It does not matter whether the flash is attached or not. Once you set the camera for your studio flash, say 1/250th at f5.6, the camera, which is showing you what you will get at that exposure without the flash, will show a black screen unless the ambient light is brighter than what you would typically get indoors. That is why, as Jerry says, you have to set preview exp/wb to off. I have set a button for this.
    • I connected to FRAME.IO a while back and it works fine, but the camera wouldn't connect to the internet all of a sudden today and would get stuck on the reset screen, including initializing and even switching USB Connection mode. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?
