x-t1 can shutter button NOT focus?

Recommended Posts

I just got an x-t1 and want to use it in auto focus but I want to focus with one of the back buttons and not the shutter button. I want the shutter button to activate metering but only that.   I am a bit confused by the menu system in this regard.    I'm hoping to change the left and right default settings on the four way switch as well.  Right now they are film simulation and WB,  things I just don't need so prevalently placed.

thanks,

Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Put AF on Manual with the switch (M). Then you can still  activate AF by pressing the AF-L button on the back. It's a tric and not exactly the same as most brands, but it works for me.

The buttons of the 4-way switch are configurable. Long press a button and you will get a menu to choose a function from.

Exactly, that is common practice, lots of people like to work that way. And i do too on some occasions when i just don't need it to keep re-focusing for every shot. Landscape for example when trying different compositions or when you are waiting for the right moment, you can 'prepare' by presetting the focus and it's great knowing it won't change unless you tell it to!

It even saves battery power not to activate the AF for every shot when it isn't necessary.

The X-T1 and X-T10 still use the phase detection when using 'instant AF' (pressing AF-L in manual mode). It was added to the black X-T1 in a firmware update at the end of last year and the Graphite Silver X-T1 and X-T10 launched with it. I don't remember if the X-Pro1, X-E2 and any of the X100 cameras got this update or not.

It does still have the massive drawbacks of leaving you open to accidentally shifting focus by nudging the focus ring—i.e. manual focus is still active and overrides the AF-L button, so you don't get true back-button focus—but it's as good as Fuji gets.

Why they can't/won't provide an option for proper back button focusing, I don't know.
