X-Pro 2 35mm is it something for me?

Recommended Posts

This is first post ever on this forum. I'm a person who does not have big photography aspirations, but I do enjoy shooting pictures occasionaly. 90% of the time to capture moments in my personal life. Before I got my Fujifilm camera I shot mainly with my iPhone and Minolta XG-2.

In february I bought an X70, an impulse decision the day before I left on vacation. I knew about the X70 long before, but I was turned away by the lack of VF and how it's not Fuji's most succesfull camera. I did and still like the image quality, compactness, ergonomics and lens. And the JPEGs, the main reason I ignored any other camera, it had to be a Fuji. I don't want to postprocess my pictures.

Fastforward to today, I sometimes miss being able to shoot a longer lens. A 45mm equivalent (I love that lens on my XG-2) lens and a longer one. I also have the WCL-X70, great addition to my X70, but a 1.6 times conversion lens doesn't exist because it would be ungainly large on the X70.
The X-PRO2 caught my eye. I like the WS , optical VF (I don't like a EVFs, my eyes find them "odd"), 24mp sensor, the film simulations... Of course I would go for the 35mm lens (50mm equivalent).

But should I buy it? It's a lot of money for a camera and my main question is: would I use it enough?
My doubts are about the size and lens.
The size; on paper it's about the same as my XG-2, but it looks a lot bulkier. How pocketable is it?Is it a camera you take with you easily?

Lens: the 35mm F2.0, aside from portraits, how much overlap does it have with the 18mm from the X70? (may sound like a strange question, but if I have the 35mm in my hand I obviously don't have the x70 with me. Would I find the lack of wide angle anoying?)

I don't think there is a correct answer to my questions, but any insight from you, more experienced users, would be appreciated. :)

A 35mm on my X-Pro2 would be the equivalent of a 50mm Normal Lens so I don't think you'd see much wide angle to that lens. I personally have the 18-55 zoom and use it 80% of the time. This last weekend I took mine out with the only prime I own, a 24 mm equivalent, nice lend and a handy compact configuration, that I carried around my neck all morning without complaint. Reminded me of a smaller Leica "M", tho its been forever since I've handled one.

A prime lens is always a specialist that can do one thing very well and others not so well or even not at all. A zoom lens is more a jack of all trades but master of none. Unless you have a precise idea of your shooting style I would recommend the 18-55/2.8-4.0, may be second hand. If you really know what suits you best together with the Pro 2 you can trade it for the prime with your preferred focal lens.

Not sure anyone answered your question. However, only you can determine if you should buy it.  Personally, if size were an issue, I'd would seriously look at an X-E2 with the 18mm F2 or 27mm lens.  This is solely based on size/pocketability. I used to shoot an X-E1 four years ago and LOVED IT!  The XPro1 or 2 never lit my fire... if you know what I mean.

You may want to visit a local camera shop that carries what you are interested in.  Or, may I suggest you rent one for a weekend and put it to a test.    You'll quickly determine if it's something for you, without the $ involved in purchasing something you may not be happy with.

Just to be clear, I'm not planning on selling my X70. The x-pro2 would be an addition. :)

Pulled the trigger and got an X-pro2 with 35mm. Love it to bits, and most important I don't think it's better or worse than my X70, each has its right of existance. ^_^
Still finding the best settings to shoot. You'd expect them to be the same as on the X70, but for instance colors feel more saturated standard.

Next challenge is to find something to put in when taking it with me.

I love my X Pro 2. The size and weight of it feel just right to me now. It's solid and quality-feeling but not so bulky that you can't take it with you. I have the 35mm f2 but I find that I don't use it as much as my other lenses, the 18mm f2 and 23mm f2. I like to get close to my subjects and the 35mm makes me stand back too far if I want to get people in context

I own and enjoy the X-Pro2 but that does make it fit in a pocket. My old X-M1 does and the new X-E3 is much closer to pocket size. I love the optical viewfinder but the Electronic viewfinders are absolutely sufficient for 99.999 % of my work. While waiting for the X-Pro2 I bought an X-E2 and you don't need the megapixels until you crop tight, they are cheap now and great in expensive cameras that are still reasonably compact.

My XPRO 2 is partner to the 18mm for work inside, outside there is often a 100 to 400 leading- outside walkabout I often take the XE2s with 18-55 as I like the auto scene function and flexaility- however if something is to fit in the pocket around town my XA1 & 27mm fit into a ( large ) suit pocket

Cameras for every occasion!!!!!!!
