how to lock aperture XT-2 camera / XF56 lens

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to take manual shots without any moving mechanical parts. But I can't figure out how to disable and lock the motorized aperture. Any ideas?

DESIRED

Locking the aperture to a fixed position, so that I can take multiple shots without the aperture motor moving at all.

CURRENT

I put the camera in aperture priority, and select f/8 on the lens aperture ring. The physical aperture sits wide open. I half press the shutter release. The motorized aperture reduces to f/8. Full press takes the shot. Aperture moves back to wide open.

CAMERA LENS

Fuji X-T2 camera, Fujinon XF56mmF1.2 R lens. As far as I can tell, this lens has no buttons.

I do not think that is at all possible. At least not with that lens, if it is not introduced as a feature in the firmware. AFAIK, focus and aperture are "by wire" - electronically controlled. Even if the aperture ring has hard stops. One way perhaps is to use a fully manual lense from another brand with an adapter and set the camera to shoot without lense - e.g. Nikon AF-D 50mm f1.8. It has an aperture ring which is mechanically attached and controls the aperture.

Try this:

Set your camera to manual exposure i.e. select your aperture AND speed.

Find the "Preview Exposure in Manual" setting in the menu.

Turn the setting to ON

Try your scenario, does the aperture change?

Thanks, Picturer. Unfortunately this did not do the trick.

Goal:

No movement of aperture motor before, during, and after photograph.

What I tried:

1. Set camera to autofocus (Focus mode selector: S)

2. Set aperture to f/16 on the lens ring

3. Set shutter speed dial to 1/60

4. SET UP > SCREEN SETUP > PREVIEW EXP./WV IN MANUAL MODE = PREVIEW EXP./WB

What happened:

1. Aperture starts closed at f/16

2. Half press: aperture goes full open, then part open (f/4?),  focus beep, then back to f/16

3. Full press: shot is taken, no more movement of aperture

What I tried #2:

1. Set camera to manual focus (Focus mode selector: M)

2. Set aperture to f/16 on the lens ring

3. Set shutter speed dial to 1/60

4. SET UP > SCREEN SETUP > PREVIEW EXP./WV IN MANUAL MODE = PREVIEW EXP./WB

What happened:

1. Aperture starts wide open

2. Half press: aperture closes to f/16

3. Full press: shot is taken

4. Remove hand from button: aperture opens wide

Try as I said, same as your #1 but this time aquire and lock focus using the AF-L button.

I don't have the X2 but this works with my XT10.

Select exposure preview in manual =on

Select aperture

Select speed

Aquire and lock focus with the AF-L button

Take shot at the locked focus

Nothing moves

Take next shot at the same locked focus

Nothing moves

Etc etc

Boy, this is tricky. The following recipe locks the physical aperture exactly as

I hoped.  But I still (!) hear a motor moving somewhere in the lens every time

I take my finger off the shutter button.

SET UP > BUTTON DIAL/SETTING > SHUTTER AF = OFF

SET UP > BUTTON DIAL/SETTING > SHUTTER AE = OFF

SET UP > BUTTON DIAL/SETTING > AE/AF LOCK MODE = SWITCH

SHOOTING SETTING > SHUTTER TYPE = ELECTRONIC SHUTTER

Focus mode selector: S

Lens aperture ring: f/11

Shutter speed dial 1/60

Push AF-L

Shoot, Shoot, Shoot

  • 1 year later...

I was thinking about selling all my Fuji lenses and sticking with the manual lenses only due to this aperture movement. It makes shooting annoying especially when you zone focus in the street. why would I wait for the aperture blade to close and open. 0.5 seconds can be a miss or a catch sometimes. Fujifilm should find an easier way to solve this.

Anyways, here is the solution I found on x-t2. Latest firmware 4.20;

- All manual mode: None of the Aperture, shutter and Iso is A.

-  Preview exposure in manual mode on.

- This is the weird part: continuous focus. It does not work in single or manual focus.

Regards,

That's the main reason I don't use brilliant XF 35mm F1.4 lens - extra aperture lag is jus so annoying.

The only workaround worked for me for shot sequence - to keep AF button half pressed, so at least I can take quick few shots in a row without "re-aperturing" the lens between each shot.

    • Grzegorz, Go to the Networking Setting in your camera menu (the last one at the bottom - unless you have a My Menu then that is the last one). There, go to Network Setting and choose the SSID (name) of your WiFi network, type in the password, choose "SET". If you have a functioning DHCP server on your network, the camera should get its IP address (and Subnet_Mask and Gateway). If not, you can enter these manually. It is a little tricky, there will be some zeros already here, move the cursor after the zero and use DEL to delete it and make space in the input fields for your own correct values. If you do not know what to enter, have a look at values in the network settings of your computer and use the same except for the IP address, try some fairly higher number, hopefully you hit an unused one. Usually the values would be something like IP: 192.168.1.188, Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0, Gateway IP: 192.168.1.1  or something like that, take clues from your computer. The camera and computer must be on the same network. Then in Connection Mode on the camera, choose Wireless Tethering Fixed. And half-press the shutter to exit the menu and get in shooting mode. The red LED should be blinking. If you can look at your network devices, e.g. on your router, you should see the camera there. You can see check the camera settings in the camera menu in the INFORMATION item of the Network Setting menu to see the MAC address of your camera and look for it in the list of devices on your network.  Then use the tethering in your software, e.g. in Capture One. The camera may not show immediately, take a shot and then it should show in the list of available cameras. Good luck. Report back how did you fare.  PS If you have a Windows machine, you need to have Bonjour installed and running. Macs have it.
    • Hey all, I just got my first camera. The X-T30 II. It seems the Eye Sensor + LCD Image Display view-mode is doing the exact same thing as just the Eye Sensor view-mode setting. Any ideas why this is or what's supposed to be happening? Firmware Version: 2.04
    • What GordW said. You have to put the drive mode dial to "S" - Single Frame. If you have it on CL, CH, BKT or Panorama (or HDR), the Multiple Exposure option will be greyed out in the shootng menu. On my X-T5 it works in RAW + JPG and also in JPG only. When Multiple Exposure is switched on, the image quality cannot be set to RAW only. If it was set to RAW only before switching Multiple Exposure On, image quality defaults to RAW+Fine. The result is JPG. After each shot press MENU/OK and after the last one press DISP/BACK.
