Which lenses should I take and how many cameras?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I'll be going to Vietnam soon and I was just wondering if I should take my Xpro-2 and 1 with me? My lenses are the XF 16, 23 f/1.4, 35 f/1.4, 56, 90 and the 50-140mm. Which lenses would you take and why? I'm interested in travel, landscape, portraits, architecture and nightlife etc. I really need to limit my gear so the wife doesn't get annoyed with the constant lens changing lol!

I will start by saying I have never been to Vietnam, so I am not familiar with the what you would need to be prepared for to shoot. With that said, the 50-140mm is a great lens, but it is quite large and I would probably leave that lens at home unless there was a specific use for it. I think the 16 would be a must. I would also take the 23 and 35 and probably the 90. It would be difficult to choose between the 90 and the 56, but the 90 would give you a telephoto if needed. If you only wanted to take three lenses, I'd bring the 16 and your two favorite focal lengths. For bodies, I'd bring both if you can. I read a post recommending you always take two bodies with when going on a major trip where photography will be a primary focus as if one body malfunctions, you want to have a backup.

Personally I'd take the 16mm, which is a great wide-angle lens, if a little bulky. Then I'd want a normal lens for street shots, for which I'd pick the 23mm. Finally I'd want a portrait lens, and for me the choice would be between the 35mm and the 56mm. Both have a lot going for them. So what about the longer lenses? If I were going to Vietnam, I'd want a bit of Vietnam in every shot. Long lenses have a tendency to isolate the subject and flatten perspective, so I'd feel like I would be constantly fighting to put back the context that the lens was taking out. I'd leave them at home.

X-Pro 2 and a back up body.  I would pack the 16 1.4 (which is one of two of my "don't leave home without it lens next to the 18-55), then the 23mm, and the 56mm.  If I owned the 50-140, which I do not (I own the fabulous 55-200) I would leave that beast at home.

Have a wonderful trip!  Maybe you'll post some images here?
