Should I upgrade?

Recommended Posts

Currently running on an X-Pro1, along with an 18mm f2, 35mm f1.4 and 56mm f1.2. Looking to upgrade to a new body at some point this year. only option at the moment is really an x-t1. what would people recommend? upgrade to the x-t1 or wait for a future release later in the year x-t2 / x-pro2??

sorry if a similar question has already been posted, first time post so go easy on me :)

It sounds like you are not happy with what is available on the market today and you don't have a burning desire get a camera right now.  There will always be something newer and we have no idea what it will be or when.   Why not wait for the x-q1 or x-l5 instead?  Why take any action at all?

Tells us about YOUR motivation for upgrading in the first place.

ok maybe i could have worded it better.... its not that I'm not happy with what is available on the market, more that id like to hear peoples opinions if they were in a similar situation. my motivation is I will soon be starting my first proper position doing photography as a job. I feel like my x-pro1 is slightly outdated and will be even further so with the release of the x-t1's new firmware releasing soon.

I realise there will always be something new out or on the horizon, but i currently have the cash available to upgrade if i wished to do so. If you were in my shoes would you stick it out for a new body to be released later in the year and save some more cash in the meantime. or pick up an x-t1 at an ok price now?

Horses for the courses. There's no replacement for the X-Pro1 w/ XF27mm (or 18mm) combo when discovering the streets of a city. Of course, there are a lot of occasions where the X-T1 is the better choice. I do own both and I like both, too.

PS: We don't talk about an upgrade but about two different concepts

XE-2 is also an option.

Similar control layout to the X-Pro 1 (kind of),

Eye piece is on the left,

EVF 95% as good as the XT1's (just as fast refresh rate, just smaller)

Cheap.

It's definitely a substantial speed upgrade of the XPro1. But you lose the OVF.

I have the XE2 and the XT1.

Some days I choose to take the XE2 for it's lightness and built-in flash.

However, the controls aren't as good as XT1 though. I fumble with the ISO and AF point selection everytime I go back to the XE2.

If you're on a budget and don't mind the layout of the XE2 go for that.

Otherwise go for XT1. Enjoy the AF speed. then get the new firmware. Then enjoy the even faster AF speed.

What are the requirements of the job? What kind of photography?

If I was in this situation, here is how I would go about it.

1. I would write down the requirements of the job in prioritized order and then

2. determine what is the best tool for the job CURRENTLY available or one with guaranteed availability and features that I can count on to meet my schedule.

You stated above that your only option right now is the x-t1.   I am not sure why, but I assume you know best. You are not me and I am pretty sure that no one here knows you better than you either. ;-)

Having said that.

Does the x-t1 meet all your requirements NOW or is there something it does not meet?

If it does,  then buy it.

If it doesn't,  but you want to wait for some hypothetical Fuji camera with some "potential" feature without a timeline that might meet your requirements, then wait.

sorry if it sounds like a flow chart of boring business logic but that is how I think.  If the camera purchase is truly for employment then I recommend that you treat it that way.  It should make your decision easier.

I personally, I don't like hurting my brain comparing real existing products to hypothetical future cameras that don't exist yet and have no guarantee of timeline or feature set that may or may not actually meet my requirements; when and if Fuji decisions to actually release something remotely aligned with the rumor mill.   Maybe I'm just weird but I like to work in certainties of the present.   Making a decision without all the facts in hand about requirements, timeline, feature set and price is not something that I want spend to much time thinking about. While it might be fun to work in uncertainties and unknowns of things to come, it is imply not productive use of my time, and IMHO yours either.

Good luck and hope you are able come a decision without agonizing over it too much.

If your X-Pro1 meets your deeads at large and if you're happy with the OVF I would wait for the X-Pro2. I've bought my X-T1 in New Zealand in order to make better pictures of my grandson. For portraits the X-T1 works much better than the X-Pro1 (IMHO)
