Any FXFers Using the New Affinity Photo?

Recommended Posts

Is anybody out there using Affinity Photo? I don't see it mentioned on FXF anywhere. I recently bought it, and am slowly learning to use it (great tutorials available from Affinity Photo itself, and many more on YouTube and other sources). It seems to have everything for photographers that Photoshop has, and more!

I'll keep on using Photoshop CS6 until Adobe squeezes me out (I refuse to "subscribe" - it seems too much like indentured servitude). By then I'll be up and running with this amazing, full-featured alternative that costs only $50, and which Serif, the parent company, says will NEVER be available by subscription.

I haven't gotten past the trial version of it yet, but definitely plan to buy it once I finish a couple of other projects. It's the best Photoshop work-alike program I've seen.

I'm in the same position you are – CS6 not supporting new cameras and eventually it may not run on newer computers. Plus I'm reducing monthly financial commitments, not taking on new ones that will only go up.

I did some RAW developments with the trial recently and think it uses the very very good Apple RAW COdec with lots of adjustments possible. Was very happy with the RAW conversions - up there with RAW Therapee and Aperture and a bit better or at least equal with iridient IMO.

New X-T2 users should be aware that, as far as I can determine, their new camera is NOT YET supported by Affinity. At least not my copy of it. If I am wrong, please let me know. I want to use Affinity with my new camera.

The most recent Affinity Photo 1.5 Beta 5 (https://affinity.serif.com/forum/index.php?/topic/24993-affinity-photo-customer-beta-15-beta-5/) will open X-Pro-2 and X-T2 raw files, and the developed images look very good. Here is a link to Affinity Photo forum thread of advantages over Photoshop (https://affinity.serif.com/forum/index.php?/topic/16419-advantages-over-photoshop/). FWIW, I am not connected to Affinity Photo, other than having purchased v1.4.

I have v 1.4.2 only. I'm wary of beta software and can wait until v1.5 comes out, hopefully soon.
