My vintage X70 (not for weak hearted)

Recommended Posts

Can't understand why you did this to a new camera. If you want a used camera, make it because you're traveling and shooting a lot, not because you think it is stylish. For me it is stupid to have a fake used camera.

Wow. I'm new to this forum, but I'm on a few other hobby related ones. I'm always amazed by people's negativity. Photography is an art, and the camera is the tool. If someone chooses to personalize their tool and share it, let them. If you don't care for it, then keep your snippy little comments to yourself.

If you don't have anything nice to say, than don't say it all. Something we all should have learned in kindergarten.

No, Pierre pretty much nailed it.  Unless we are misunderstanding the OP, that camera is a fraud.  It does not sound like it earned its scrapes and dings through actual use.

When you write on a forum you expose yourself especially if you destroy a camera as he did! Edited by Pierre

Writing this with a smile I thank everyone of you for their non sugar coated comments on my latest "crazy act".

Pierre comments is no surprise and understandable , my dad actually act the same way, slapping on my 40 years old head when he saw what I did.

But let me explain why I did it beside the fact that I like to do it. I'm a modeler, scale car modeler that is. Replicate the old worn out look of old cars on to 1/10 scale. When I was young I was fascinated with old cameras especially those from war photographers. So yes you're right that what I did is not real and fake but I know for sure being just a enthusiasts, my gear won't look like that even when I'm dead. So I replicated to my taste. I loved I even more now and it's a keeper.

Digital cameras comes and goes, I'm not destroying it just cosmetic enhancements, every scratch I have made is well thought and calculated.

Writing this is by no means to win Pierre or anybody over to like what I did. You don't like? Me happy ;) Meaning there won't be any other like mine.

Here's a picture of my other hobby beside taking pictures.

Thanks for watching and feel free free to comment.

Kind of makes my heart race, but if you're happy with it then have at it.

I prefer my camera to get scratched the old fashioned way, so I try not to baby them in the field, but no matter how hard I try, they still look fantastic.  I still don't have the guts to take some sand paper or something to them though.  Still, they do look cool when they "appear" well used.

Clearly, it's a thing.

That's Xpro2 is actually my inspiration.

I actually think it looks awesome. The OP is obviously an artist. What he does with his gear should be his business. Calling the camera a 'fraud'...really? Does that mean all the pics he takes are fraudulent images? Lol. I'm loving my x70 more every day and if I had his skills I might take a crack at personalizing mine as well. Thanks for sharing that @fujiglitch.

Hey, it's your camera. I think it looks awesome.  I also wish it came from long-term use.  But thats neither here nor there.  In today's "buy new" world, most of our gear will never look like that.  I shoot with an X-T1.  I've owned it since February 2014;  It's worn a bit, some brass is showing, i've used it literally IN saltwater, wet sand, mud, rain, sleet and snow, but it still looks new.  And trust me it is NOT attributed to any of my housekeeping attributes.

Now, my 1978 Minolta X-E7 which I still own, that thing looks worse than your camera does -- and it still functions!!  And if you think that would like bad, the prism, where the word "Minolta" is printed, is held in place by black electrical tape with a small cutout for the light meter.  If you take the tape off, the entire meter, prism, and wires just dangle outwards.  The results of four very rough and tumble years in Alaska from Valdez to North of Fairbanks!!!

Anyway, to each his own.  I like the look; I prefer it were natural, but either way, it's rocks.

Best.

J

To each their own.  I'm with your dad, FujiGlitch, and would be giving you a slap on the head (even though I'm only a few years older than you).  ;)  I don't necessarily baby my equipment, but I do like keeping it look as new as possible.

To a non-Fuji owner - and someone who doesn't know what the camera really is - the beaten up looking X70 will look vintage and well used as per the intent of FujiGlitch.  So while we wouldn't be fooled, more than 99% of the public will be.  And this is a photography forum.  We take pictures that are either seen as good or not good based on a bunch of subjective factors.  Like HDR, this camera may not be to everyones taste, but what WE do isn't to everyone's taste either.

I think that looks great (and very well done) !

People that think they gear is like precious and cannot bear a scratch need to think again about photography.

My X-T1 has some scratches, my 18/2 lens hood is in a bad shape and cannot be removed form the lens.

But being careless about the gear is what lead you to get great pictures. If you worry about the scratches, rain, dust and other problems, you may loose a shot. Maybe you're fine with it, but I'm not :)

I like it a lot, well done!

I'm a big fan of worn out items, and jlmphotos is right in saying that most of our actual electronic stuff won't get used long enough to get this kind of look from use only.

I bought a second hand X-E1 which doesn't look good at all when scratched though, just boring dark grey under the scratched light grey.

I would like to see a "real color" photo of your modification if you don't mind, perhaps I could go with a black camera next time if the scratches are more aesthetically pleasant!

On the other hand, I hate scratches on some of my electronics, like laptop, smartphone, tablet.

For this old look, I go with leather cover on my phone which takes every ding and scratches, and the mix of brand new screen surrounded by worn out leather is somehow fascinating.

Anyway, to each their own, and keep the photo coming!

did you scratch up the LCD screen too?? lmao.

I unintentionally scratched the LCD on my X100T by throwing it on top of my 50-140 in my Pelican.  If I can only turn back time to correct my stupidity :(

That being said, it's his camera and his choice to do what he wants.  I like the look of a brassed camera....Leica buyers will pay a premium for a celebrity endorsed brassed camera....which is crazy to me!

I think it looks cool. I mean, it's a bit like pre-distressed jeans but it's damn near impossible to put that much wear on a camera these days if you're going for that look. I have a few nicks on my X-T1 but I doubt it will ever look as "vintage" as that.

LOL people saying you "destroyed" it. I assume it still functions 100%...it just looks badass now.

    • Looking more like the next Fuji camera we see will be an X-T50 but it is still a rumor and no specs have been published.
    • Hey guys, The shutter on/off button switch may be loose on mine. After turning camera on and pressing the shutter/holding close to the area, the camera will turn off and say 'sensor cleaning'. This doesn't happen if I'm shooting via touch screen at all. Everything else is functional. Anyone else experience this before? Would love a much cheaper fix since Fuji Canada just quoted me $700 CAD to fix it, and considering everything else is functional except that part I'm not even sure why MPMB Main Board parts is being replaced😕 I got no explanation from them either.
    • As far as I know the firmware is not country specific. Are you sure that the filename has not been changed ( I am told this can happen with mac os). That's the only thing I can think of.
    • My x-t5 does not exhibit the focusing switch behaviour as you report it, so that is very strange and indicative of a fault. It does not matter whether the flash is attached or not. Once you set the camera for your studio flash, say 1/250th at f5.6, the camera, which is showing you what you will get at that exposure without the flash, will show a black screen unless the ambient light is brighter than what you would typically get indoors. That is why, as Jerry says, you have to set preview exp/wb to off. I have set a button for this.
    • I connected to FRAME.IO a while back and it works fine, but the camera wouldn't connect to the internet all of a sudden today and would get stuck on the reset screen, including initializing and even switching USB Connection mode. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?
